If I'm going for surprising a girl with dinner/wine (or picnic in the mountains and wine) I don't want to ask her what wine she likes, unless we happen to be talking about favorite alcohols, because asking her might key her off that you're planning something.
I used to go to a local wine store, and tell the owner what I was making for dinner and asked what she would suggest under a certain price range. We'd walk around the store, and she would grab a bottle here and there, it's when she would pick up a bottle, kind of hug it and say "Oh I love this" than I would say "I want that". That's how I found Evolution 9. It's not super sweet, but it's definitely smooth, and after that it all comes down to presentation.
