Looking forward to winter?

Here's what a fellow Canuck is planning to do this winter;

As a matter of fact, he's appearing on a reality TV program we have up here
for inventors seeking investors to launch their idea. He's invested more than
$700,000 of his own money in developing this thing.
Full story is here;
globeandmail.com: Mountain biking meets skiing

So, What's winter gonna be like for you?
Here in Montreal we can expect 7+ feet of snow by March, temps down to -25c.

I plan on sledding with the 8 year old, maybe carpet riding.
Baby girl is still too young.
Any outdoor plans for you guys?

Indeed, I am.

If only a reason to post this, then I am thus satisfied.
(But, no, going outside; it's freezing.)

I emailed that to my roommate, Amaras! He's big into telemark skiing, and he has offered to take us with him this winter. He has extra skis; I just need boots. Last winter we had the opportunity to climb a local mountain in the snow. We hiked over six miles to the summit and back to the parking lot in snow about 1-2 feet deep so we could go sledding on the top.

Personally, I'm looking forward to getting out in the snow and trying to learn to ski sometime this winter, or else just doing lots of hiking in it. I've got to get outside in it, else I start hibernating.

My favourite long term skiing has to be cross country. Have you thought of trying that,
onesnowyowl?

That's actually the kind of skiing I'm planning to start with; the extra pair of skis I referred to are cross country skis that my roommate no longer uses since he took up telemarking. He also has a spare pair of telemark skis, but those are reserved for my SO, as they have bindings and boots that will fit him.

Cross country skiing? Cool. Take some pictures while you are out, post 'em here. I'd love to see them.
I'd like to here how it goes.

My roommate got a new digital camera this last summer and he definitely takes a lot of pictures with it. I'm sure that if we do end up going skiing with him sometime this winter, there will be photographic evidence.

I'm looking forward to our January move to Ohio! We'll arrive right in the thick of snow season. Though the city we'll be living in doesn't have much snow, we're looking forward to getting out and about. I am dying to teach myself how to key denuded deciduous trees.

We don't get decent winters in southwest Texas. No snow, nada. It's still hot during most days, too. I am looking forward to burning overpriced logs in the fireplace, though.

I sit at my writing/art/dining table and let the swirling snowflakes mesmerize.

I eat more soup, I read more books, I brew more tea, I sleep more.

Tonight we are supposed to have another five inches of heavy wet snow.

If I feel ambitious tommorow morning, I will enjoy making snow figures.

I live in MN so I am usually sick of Winter by December 26. But the truth is I really enjoy the changing of the seasons! Especially cooking comfort foods and football season. This winter I promised the kids a couple things:

1. Ice skating with the daughter.
2. Tubing with both kids.
3. Snowball fights with the all the kids in my neighborhood...

Identifying trees without leaves Leaves are one of the primary methods for identifying deciduous trees; it gets a lot more interesting to identify them if the leaves are gone!

Keying. Cool, I learnt something new today.
It feeds my inner geek (oh yes, I have one). In Scouts, and during camping trips,
I used to love orienteering.
I'm already planning a camping trip with the 8 year old for next summer.
Probably do a few short hikes (hour or two) with him through an Arboretum or
local park with forest.

I lived in the mountains of NC for a while and I can say with all my heart; I hate winter. I would rather be sweating my ass off on some tropical beach than freezing my ass off in nasty slush that they call snow around here. I do love sitting around a fire and the soul filling food that gets made during the time, but I don't care for cold weather.

I do love throwing snowballs at people when we have enough snow to make a snowball.. sandballs just don't have the same effect.

I'll leave the looking forward to winter to the rest of you.

Personally, I'm with LoganSnake: only about 4 months to spring!

I will say, I'm looking forward to a certain week in January, when Battlestar Galactica starts its final season, Barack Obama is inaugurated, and both Nip/Tuck and The L Word resume.

I've got to find something to enjoy about the winter!

Oh, and props to Jetée for the Vivaldi.

I used to not look forward to winter, and then I discovered all of the outdoor activities I could do even when it was miserable so long as I was bundled up. Here in Western Oregon most of the winter is wet and awful, but we've had some odd breaks the last couple of years where there will be no rain for a few days and the weather will just be clear and cold and beautiful. Evidently it's like that almost all the time during winter on the other side of the Cascades, though with snow. It doesn't really snow here. You have to drive to get to the snow. We live about half an hour away from the tallest peak in the Coast Range, and there is often snow up there that is easily reachable, so it is a popular sledding destination. The real mountains are about an hour and a half away, with the nearest ski area not much farther beyond that.

So long as I have my winter coat, I'm fine.
