Fast Talker/Slow Talker?

So, are you a person who speaks and communicates quickly, concisely?
Or are you more deliberate and paced, or perhaps meandering?

If youre fast, what do you think of slow talkers? Is it annoying, patience-withering, soothing, easy to deal with, do you even notice?

If youre a slow talker, what\'s it like dealing with fast communicators? What do you think about them?

I\'m somewhere in the middle.

Both people that talk too fast or too slow bother me. I often find myself missing key points of importance with overly fast talkers and I often find myself completing sentences and ideas in my head with slow talkers, which leads my mind to wander and miss the point because I stopped listening.

*nodding head* Slow talkers make me snooze. Although I might miss something in a fast talker's arsenal, I prefer the challenge of trying to figure out what they said. Then again, I've never been shy about asking them to repeat and slowwww down.

Myself? I'm in the middle, too.

I'm a slow-paced guy, myself. I like to have time to formulate my answers.

Just because the human brain can process 400-700 words a minute doesn't mean we get anything useful out of it in our ability to respond.

I speak quickly most of the time, though I don't *think* I talk super fast. I pretty much speak the way that I write, though. As for the slower speakers, mostly I don't mind at all, but I do have to stop myself from jumping in on the ends of their sentences (just because I don't want to be rude!!). I'm so self-conscious about how much I talk that generally, I'm too worried about being rude to those that are not as quick to speak/extroverted/etc to be annoyed that they aren't communicating as fast as I do. Unless it's something ridiculous, of course. You know, like in the cartoons! Oh, and old and/or sick people take a long time sometimes, but that's not their fault, and you can't finish their sentences, so you just have to sit back and wait it out.

I generally tend to talk quickly. Talking quickly, and precisely, is really important for what I do, so it actually works out quite well for me.

It depends on two thing: what I'm talking about and with whom I am speaking. If I'm talking about something that fascinates me, more often than not I am going at a mile a minute. If I'm talking to someone who has the necessary vitality to take how quickly I naturally speak, I'll go a mile a minute. Otherwise, I speak at newscaster speed.

Let talking speed = TAs
Let thinking speed = THs
Let thinking speed of listener = TLs

If TAs < THs, and TAs < TLs, then communication happens.

If TAs > THs, gibberish happens.

If TAs > TLs then it doesn't matter what you say, the listener won't get it.

It's not about thinking speed. It's listening speed that's the thing.

All people talk faster than they listen. All of them. So the trick is to speak at the rate people listen.

If I remember correctly, electrical synapses fire at 0.2 ms.
It takes effort and discipline to really listen sometimes.
If I could speak as fast as I think it would sound like a buzzing insect.

I have to slow down my speech to be understood.

It all depends on how I want the audience to react. In an informal conversation with friends or family, I'll speak to be heard and understood. In a business meeting, I speak loudly, clearly, confidently, and at a medium pace to convey a sense of authority and command of the situation. In a speech or presentation, I begin as I would in a meeting, speaking forcefully and clearly, then observe the audience reaction and adjust my intonation, pace, and vocabulary to create the desired scope and scale of emotional response from the largest part of the audience or its most important members.

I'm a real quick talker, sometimes I even talk so fast my tongue can't keep up so I studder... kind of retarded I know but it happens! I can't handle people who talk slow, I always end up trying to finish their sentences. They annoy the hell out of me... I find myself sitting there and nodding excessively to help them form the words so they'll speed up (sadly it doesn't work). It's kind of funny, I went on a date with a guy and afterwards he went home and blogged about how quickly I spoke and how it was ok because I speak clearly. He said it was like a game for him, he'd sit silently knowing I was a nervous talker and that I'd talk about whatever came to mind and the more nervous I got the quicker I spoke. What a sick game huh?

I'm a slow listener and a slower talker. I'ts a noying for me becuase my words can never catch up to my ideas. I'm just not a verbal person at all but i do like listening. Fast talkers like Jezzabelle tend to leave me in the dust though I do like the challenge of trying to keep up.

Yeah, it take about 0.3ms for transmitters to transfer from neuron to neuron. The impulses travel at about 70m/s. There are about 6 synapses before you are even aware of a sound and it takes many more synapses to process and understand what has been said.

With all the modification that can happen at every synapse it makes you wonder, how much of what you comprehend is actually what has been said?

I talk real slow but I don't have a problem with the speed of other people's dialogues. If they have a problem with how slow I talk then they need to chill the fuck out in my opinion. Granted, I'm from Texas. (see No Country for Old Men)

I talk medium paced but Loud real loud. I am so loud that I got caught cheating in exams when I tried to help my friend and I thought I was whispering.
I don't mind people talking fast if I can understand and slow if they are not making me fall asleep.

i get frustrated listening to a slow talker, i want to finish their sentences. that said, i had to learn to speak slower and more clearly so people could understand me and not tell me to "calm down." i was calm, i just spoke really fast.

I think I talk still slow because my sentences are usually fairly complex and unpredictable. If speed is an issue then I'm more than capable of fast talking. But I've had interactions with business type people who are always trying to finish my sentences, and they never have any idea where I'm heading and that sort of pisses me off. If it was that obvious then I wouldn't bother saying anything.
