It all depends on how I want the audience to react. In an informal conversation with friends or family, I'll speak to be heard and understood. In a business meeting, I speak loudly, clearly, confidently, and at a medium pace to convey a sense of authority and command of the situation. In a speech or presentation, I begin as I would in a meeting, speaking forcefully and clearly, then observe the audience reaction and adjust my intonation, pace, and vocabulary to create the desired scope and scale of emotional response from the largest part of the audience or its most important members.
