Job Seeking Question
I'm currently looking for a summer job.
Really I want to be a server or bartender @ a restaurant near my house. I went there and dropped of my resume and filled out an application the other day. The manager who was there, while quickly looking at my resume (he seemed impressed with a few of the other restaurants Ive worked at) informed me that he was transferring out and all he could do was submit this to his GM and she'll probably call me back in a few days as they should be strongly hiring. Well its been 2 days now, and no response. The job market that I'm in, is one for the workers. I could go out and get a job anywhere, and start that day. literally! Everyone knows this. So one would assume that they would be trying to contact me ASAP, as it would be very likely that I already have a job, and would no longer be interested in this one. This is a server job, so they have their mold that they like you to fit. I however would assume I fit this mold. (looks) I do have plenty of restaurant experience, unfortunately no serving experience. Should I go back in and hope that a different manager is working or the GM is there. It's possible that he forgets to submit mine, or doesnt even care to as he is transferring out. OR was this manager just brushing me off? Last edited by Temporary_User; 05-10-2007 at 03:37 AM.. |

It's a restaurant. Since you've worked in one, you know how crazy it can get. This guy is on his way out so I'm sure he could really care less if he follows through with anything.
Go back if you want the job. It shows that you are really interested if you see the same manager. If you see a different person, it gives you a chance to make an impression on another one. Just say something like, "I was here a couple days ago and filled out an application. *insert name here* told me that I should hear something in a couple days so I'm just touching base." The worst that can happen is they tell you they aren't hiring. But at least you'll know for sure and can go after another job. Good Luck!

You were expecting a response in less than two days? Unrealistic, in my opinion.
Wait a couple more days then go back in person and talk to a manager. Let them put a face with a name. Also, some restaurants require a certain amount of serving experience, so if the place that you applied has that as a requirement, you're pretty much fucked. Most restaurants are inundated with applications, so getting a job as a server is harder than it would seem.

Thanks for your quick responses everyone!
Well I expected a quick response from the manager, because the one told me I should in a few days, and also that is just the way the job market is here. The last job I had (different restaurant), i went in @ around 2pm, filled out the app. had the interview right then and was asked if I could come in the next day @ 10am. While working there I know many people came in for jobs and I know for a fact we would have put them to work that night if we could have thought of a professional way of asking one to do so. We ended up always asking them to come in the next day though. I handed the resume in on monday, tommorow (friday) should I go in and touch basis, see whats up? |

I have walked into a restaurant and started working right then...... as a dishwasher. I've heard many times of kitchen staff being hired on the spot.
Never with a server though. Obviously you know your area better than me, so it is certainly possible. Just never heard of that where I live. Friday is probably a good day to go in. Just don't go in during lunch or dinner, because you probably won't be able to speak to a manager. Most restaurants ask people to come in between two and four pm, so I'd stop in between those times. Good luck.

Yeah, I know servers are different.
My previous post was about the BOH, but I was mainly just trying to paint a portrait of how the job market is here. I guess Ill just go back in there again tommorow. I know about the 2-4. Thats when I go. I showed up @ 2 on monday. Ill probably show up @ the same time tommorow. thanks for the replies guys! |
