Amnesia's Ferret Thread

WELCOME EVERYONE!

I'm posting pictures (every last one I have - good or bad) of my ferrets with information of birthdays and even the days they passed away. This is my personal contribution to share with my friends, all of you, the pets that are and have been in my life - and how each one has given me a reason to keep moving forward!

I love and have loved each of my ferrets as if they were my own flesh and blood. They are my kids, my children, my babies. I will often refer to them as such.

The Rainbow Bridge is something I often talk about - it's Pet Heaven - specifically, in my mind, a Heaven for Ferrets. It's a beautiful place where all ferrets go. Please, read my Journal entries to know more about the Rainbow Bridge or feel free to read Elphaba's Rainbow Bridge Sticky.

If you have any questions or want information, please feel free to ask. I've owned over 14 ferrets in the last 6 years. I've done countless hours of research, taken college courses, talked to Veterinarians, and spent every day with my ferrets - I know a lot about them, so feel free to ask.

I will post some pictures of my babies, then later I will write the stories of how I came to own each. I remain hopeful that my story telling abilities are still good enough to keep each readers attention!

I hope you all enjoy what I have here. It is my gift to you!

A few to start with...

Here are photos of Sean (my best friend), Jester, Image & Sean, and Myself with Infiniti & Symphoni. I apologize for how large they are. I will work on editing some of them, in time, and make them a little smaller. Please note the title and/or phrase above each photo.

I hope that each of them make you smile! More to come! Enjoy!

Infiniti got her name because when we were bringing her home (Sean and I) she curled up into a ball to sleep, we couldn't tell where she began or ended. Hence, her name.

Echo was backing up to a corner to go to the bathroom, the day we brought him home. Sean and I stepped forward to stop him (to train him to go into the cage and do business there) and he "screamed" (very Shrill!) and it echoed throughout the apartment.

Mischeif would get into everything, hide a lot of stuff, chew on clothes/socks and get the other ferrets into trouble.

Jester, as a baby, would trip over his own feet all the time, then get mad and hop around "barking" (dooking; a noise they make) at the "invisible" cause. LOL!

Image (IMEJ) was so pretty. She was the perfect Image, and she also completed our Fabulous Five - Infiniti, Mischeif, Echo, Jester = Imej.

Symphoni was bought for my former roommate, Jenn, as a gift. She was so dark and lovely. Her barks were melodic.

Ferrets = Babies...someone's babies = ferrets.

In 2004/2005, after owning Symphoni and adopting 2 more ferrets (Maestro and Orchestra), I found out that my former roommate, Jenn, had to give up her ferrets. She gave them up to a girl, named Kelli, and her boyfriend, Josh. They had ferrets of their own at the time, and took on the 3 that Jenn had.
Maestro died within the first year of living with Kelli and Josh, he crawled up a rolled up section of carpet, got stuck and suffocated. He was a gorgeous ferret.
In 2005, my ex-boyfriend was seeing this girl who was caring for a friend's ferrets...lo and behold, Symphoni was one of them. I was introduced to Kelli and Josh shortly after finding out this news.
Earlier in 2006, Kelli and Josh were evicted from their home and Kelli brought her 6 babies to live with me: Buddah, Triniti, Li'l Bit, Symphoni, Orchestra (we called him Grampa since he was the oldest), and Rolli Polie. They joined my three: Infiniti, Jester, and Image.
I owned and cared for them from March 2006 to September 2006. They all were my babies. Kelli and Josh and I became very close as friends since I met them, over the last few years. Kelli and I, especially. Her babies are my babies and vice-versa. She's Momma Kelli; I'm Momma Bree.
We lost Rolli Polie in August, Orchestra (Grampa) in September, Image - lost 2days before Jester passed - still has not been found, and we lost Jester in October.
Kelli and Josh currently live in Tennessee now with Buddah, Triniti, Li'l Bit and Symphoni.

I've always been both a fan and an opponent of ferrets as pets because they are so damn smart.

I loved my 2 ferrets, Fifi and Figaro.
I am totally a fan of ferrets. I dont' know if all ferrets are like mine, but mine were totally fearless, but they would always try to make friends with other pets, dogs & cats first.
Modern Ferret was my favorite magazine. I think it's out of print now.
Great pics by the way! Really takes me back. Thanks!

What interesting animals these are. I have always liked them, but I couldn't get used to the smell. Even the "descented" variety still had quite an odor. I have noticed though that they seem to have very pronounced personalities. Maybe in the future I will own one

Did anybody read the Thread title as "Amnesia Ferret"? I thought it was odd for a ferret to have amnesia

All ferrets smell if you don't take care of them properly. Every last one of my ferrets gets a bath a least every 6-8 weeks, their bedding is washed once every 2 months, their cage is cleaned regularly (the more you have, the more often you must clean their cage). Some can be fearless, some are timid and like my Jester above they can be quite "momma's boys" .

They are between the intelligence of cats and dogs, and quite curious. The ferret I care for now, my last one and my oldest of the original Fabulous Five, is Infiniti. She loves to take my socks - clean or dirty - and "put them away" for me (by hiding them under the bed). She "cleans the room" by putting away her toys (hiding them under my bed, as well).

Ferrets have been domesticated for over 3,000 years. They were originally used in Europe to hunt rabbits. They were brought to America, to do the same. They are still illegal in some states - including, the most popularly known, California. California's laws refer to the cousin of the domesticated ferret, that resides in California - the Blackfoot Ferret. This ferret is larger, wild, and threatens California's poultry population.

Others, like myself, who have owned and loved ferrets as I have, have been writing letters, signing petitions and doing everything in our power (which is sometimes more difficult being out of state) to get this law amended, at the very least.

There are owners of ferrets in California. They are illegal, and if you are caught with them, they will be taken from you and you could be jailed and/or fined a few thousand dollars. The pet ferrets that are taken from their owners in California are lucky if they're shipped to another state to be sold - the unlucky ones are euthanized (i.e. put to sleep, destroyed).

I've owned cats, dogs, fish, ferrets, hamsters, rats, mice, snakes, bunnies and guinnea pigs. By far, out of all of them, ferrets have brought me the most joy - albeit, they've required a lot of care, but with that I've grown to love them as if they were my own flesh and blood.

So if you let your ferrets out to run around the house, are they litter box trained??

Yes, actually. As a kit (baby) we trained each of them to use their litter boxes, there have been accidents over the years, but for the most part, they always go back into their cage to use the bathroom.

Infiniti is doing well. She is the best ferret.

Also, my fiance's cat, a Polydactyl kitty, had 6 kittens recently. 5 of them are polydactyl (multiple toes). I will post pictures soon!
