Search license plates?
Is there anywhere you can go to get a name or address with just a license plate? Someone was snooping around our garage at about 2:20AM, and I went after them. They got in the car and took off. I called the police and they searched the area, but couldn't do anything with the plate number I got. This has me on edge a bit since I've had cars broken into, and this is a quiet neighborhood. Are there any websites or anything that'll do this for free?

You may be out of luck since there are privacy laws.
See: http://www.dot.state.ia.us/mvd/ovs/privacy.htm Good luck, I sure would like to know how to do this myself.

you may consider asking a private investigator to do you a favour (in exchange for whatever goods/services you may be able to provide) and run a check on that plate.

Check with your local DMV/MVA. Sometimes they will provide that information for a small fee.
What exactly are you hoping to find out by running the tag? If you already gave the information to the police, they should have included it in any report or CAD information that they submitted. Are you thinking that it could belong to someone you know? Last edited by fhqwhgads; 06-01-2003 at 10:32 AM.. |

I'd like to know who it was since it was a local plate and it's a relatively small town. I'd just like to know who they were, incase I ever hear their name come up.

You could put an ad in your local paper announcing that "the owner of vehicle registration XYZ 1234 is the winner of a new set of tyres/car stereo/holiday for two", leave a voicemail box or convincing email address etc and see who pops up. Word will reach him.
