in this case it means "it must be". But with this particular sentence you'll need to know what kind of text it was taken from. Otherwise it can be translated in many ways. And that's why you should never use online dictionaires but ask someone who speaks the language so they can translate it correctly

yeah, simple phrase, must it be? is a correct translation. singular present tense verb with a modal verb seinen-to be . yup.

Correction

it's sein and it's not a modal.
There are technically only 6 modals:

dürfen
können
mögen
müssen
sollen
wollen

and 3 auxilary verbs:

haben
sein
werden

It's important to know the difference, so I just wanted to clear that up

Yes, context is critical...however, I think online translators and dictionarys are valuable, when used with a bit of knowlegde of the language. Must add brain into equation.
