MIT OpenCourseWare

I personally believe this thread right here should be made sticky.

For the information of all knowledge enthusiasts and alike, MIT is offering open course ware, which is basically a project they've undertaken that gives free access to a large portion of their course materials.

And here it is.

wow

This is an amazing resource in certain areas. This is a brilliant idea, and I hope more universities decide to do something like this.

Looks pretty damn cool! Going to get a lot of use out of this I imagine!
Cheers rainheart.

p.s. the reason people mightn't be clicking this thread is the title. I didn't have a clue what "MIT OpenCourseWare" was, so I didn't think the thread would be of interest to me)

I like this site! There is also something like this at Berkeley, webcasts of some of the courses ranging from 2001. Very knowledgeable if u have the time.

Was wondering if Halx and tfp would be willing to allow a few course discussions to take place on this forum, as the MIT courseware would be wonderful in a group environment. This could eventually consume quite a bit of resourses though....so I figured I would ask first.

Anyone interested?or should we run a poll?

this is supremely cool. it would rival sliced bread, however, if there was some kind of audio or video streaming of lecutres.

I would definitly be interested. i always wanted to look into an econ class (though I realize that might not be the most popular ), bu i'm open to suggestions. I don't think it would really eat up that many resources, just a bit a spirited discussion between a few people, not much more then usually goes on here. .

It seems to be up to the individual professors. I found one course in which about a third of lectures were available on audio, and others where there wasn't much more available than the syllabus, study questions, reading lists, and some lists of key concepts.

i know a lot of the material is up to individual professors; however, some of the progress in posting things online is hampered by the need to have the correct copyright acknowledgments on everything, etc. only a few lectures are actually recorded on video, and for most of those i think you need MIT web certificates. there's still a lot of good stuff that doesn't require certificates on many of the class websites, however.

another good resource is http://mitworld.mit.edu/
basically a compilation of video lectures that have been given here, either on special occasions or the weekly colloquia, some good stuff there

Holy shit, this is amazing. Most of the courses I myself am interested in seem to have little material, but when I eventually psych myself up for some physics and coourses outside my discipline, this will come in more than handy. Thanks a bunch!

One reason it wouldn't be useful for TOO MANY universities to do this is so that the caliber of the resources are kept as high as possible...i.e., MIT.
