MIT OpenCourseWare

I personally believe this thread right here should be made sticky.

For the information of all knowledge enthusiasts and alike, MIT is offering open course ware, which is basically a project they've undertaken that gives free access to a large portion of their course materials.

And here it is.

maddemon802 12-14-2003 06:12 AM

Thank you!

I Can't believe no one has responded to this! thanks so much for sharing that link. I'm sure it is going to prove a great resource.
maddemon
ps...second the move to sticky this!

John Henry 12-14-2003 12:27 PM

kickaaaaaaaaass

sticky sticky.

inkriminator 12-14-2003 09:05 PM

wow

This is an amazing resource in certain areas. This is a brilliant idea, and I hope more universities decide to do something like this.

SiN 12-16-2003 10:35 AM

Excellent stickyThread :)

i've known about this site for almost since its very beginning...
...and recently, i've always been meaning to post it here, but kept forgetting. glad to see it here finally.

:)

CSflim 12-16-2003 02:18 PM

Looks pretty damn cool! Going to get a lot of use out of this I imagine!
Cheers rainheart.

p.s. the reason people mightn't be clicking this thread is the title. I didn't have a clue what "MIT OpenCourseWare" was, so I didn't think the thread would be of interest to me)

orphen 12-21-2003 06:36 AM

nice. i gotta check it out

Force 10 01-06-2004 07:08 PM

Wow, interesting concept. I like it. Thanks tons for the post!

KellyC 01-15-2004 12:22 AM

real nice. don't have time for it tho.

onionmon 01-15-2004 01:27 PM

I like this site! There is also something like this at Berkeley, webcasts of some of the courses ranging from 2001. Very knowledgeable if u have the time.

onionmon 01-15-2004 01:28 PM

Sry for new message, but whats sticky?

tecoyah 01-19-2004 07:27 AM

Was wondering if Halx and tfp would be willing to allow a few course discussions to take place on this forum, as the MIT courseware would be wonderful in a group environment. This could eventually consume quite a bit of resourses though....so I figured I would ask first.

Anyone interested?or should we run a poll?

hiredgun 01-28-2004 01:55 PM

tecoyah, i would definitely be up for it.

What courses are you into, and where do we go from here?

goateebird 01-31-2004 06:43 PM

Man, this is going to be absolutely indespensible for my next paper, whatever that may be. Thanks for posting this!

stoned_river 02-04-2004 06:53 PM

awesome dude

why the fuck isnt this more widely known. Oh yeah, my college is lame.

gibingus 02-06-2004 11:03 AM

this is supremely cool. it would rival sliced bread, however, if there was some kind of audio or video streaming of lecutres.

losthellhound 02-12-2004 05:30 PM

Thank you very much. Ive always thought this would be an amazing idea for a University or College

1337haxor 02-14-2004 05:45 PM

WOW!
I am a freshman right now and this may prove very useful for everything! Especially next year when I start my hardcore science courses.

I read about this on WIRED. And man, did it save my Linear Algerbra.

I would definitly be interested. i always wanted to look into an econ class (though I realize that might not be the most popular :) ), bu i'm open to suggestions. I don't think it would really eat up that many resources, just a bit a spirited discussion between a few people, not much more then usually goes on here. ;) .

Seer666 04-18-2004 01:44 PM

Wow, those are some GREAT links. I am going ot have to share them with some friends out here. Thanks much.

It seems to be up to the individual professors. I found one course in which about a third of lectures were available on audio, and others where there wasn't much more available than the syllabus, study questions, reading lists, and some lists of key concepts.

DE7 04-27-2004 01:18 PM

i know a lot of the material is up to individual professors; however, some of the progress in posting things online is hampered by the need to have the correct copyright acknowledgments on everything, etc. only a few lectures are actually recorded on video, and for most of those i think you need MIT web certificates. there's still a lot of good stuff that doesn't require certificates on many of the class websites, however.

another good resource is http://mitworld.mit.edu/
basically a compilation of video lectures that have been given here, either on special occasions or the weekly colloquia, some good stuff there

Requium 05-20-2004 10:17 AM

This is great.

This is like instead of going to college teach yourself !
The ADHD way!

twotimesadingo 05-22-2004 02:43 PM

Holy shit, this is amazing. Most of the courses I myself am interested in seem to have little material, but when I eventually psych myself up for some physics and coourses outside my discipline, this will come in more than handy. Thanks a bunch!

darwiniggy 06-26-2004 01:57 PM

It's amazing that MIT is offering so much knowledge for free! I'm definitely going to be checking out this resource over the next few months. Thanks, rainheart!

Helpher811 08-08-2004 08:14 AM

Great! No if only I could find these textbooks scanned in.... maybe kazaa...

maybe not...

Thanks for the post.

Thax a lot rainheart ... it is really an amazing post ...

tarvuz 09-18-2004 10:59 PM

I like the potential. I do hope they see the response as motivation to increase materials available.

chromanin 10-02-2004 08:44 PM

Fantastic initiative.

clarksditch 10-27-2004 07:45 AM

late reply, but damn... endless possibilities. GREAT FIND!

xepherys 10-27-2004 11:02 AM

This should help in my pre-back-to-college prep. Astrophysics is not for the weak of heart... I need to polish up my math skills hard core!

dontmisspel 10-31-2004 10:20 AM

good thread very informative, knew about the opencourseware but didn't know about online lectures

Dilbert1234567 11-02-2004 09:55 PM

great find, thanks for sharing

now i to can be an expert in plasma transport theory!

mcchots 12-03-2004 01:28 PM

Thanks for the link.
Maybe I might learn something now

eyeronic 12-19-2004 12:13 PM

That is excellent. The literature section was sort of useless, but the list of Spanish language resources was fantastic. Thanks a million.

One reason it wouldn't be useful for TOO MANY universities to do this is so that the caliber of the resources are kept as high as possible...i.e., MIT.
