I use "POW". I got it from www.download.com it's kinda a pain because everytime a new popup comes up you have to add it to a list and I have actually added my internet window a couple of times making my internet unusable. but other than those minor things it's a good program.

I use Pop-Up Stopper. It works pretty well. It just won't allow an extra internet window to open unless you hold down Ctrl. It can get a little annoying some time but it usually works quite well.

If for som reason you absolutely MUST use microsnot internet explorer then click on links by right clicking and open in a new window. Then if popups start then get quick with the "alt+F4" button combo that will kill the app window faster than the popup code can load into it.

Or, you could use Mozilla (the best browser out there) for a superior browzing experience - tabbed browsing is vastly superior. Free forever at mozilla.org If you don't want popups, you don't get no popups.

I've stopped using Pop-up Stopper and switched to "Ad Popup Killer" which basically stops Messenger Popups and all other popups. Simple in design but very effective.

If you're getting pop ups from sites you visit frequently, go into IE's "Tools", select "Internet Options", the "Security".

Select the Web Zone "Restricted Sites". Add the web address of the site you visit to the list of restricted sites. It will stop pop-ups on that site.

I use Ad Aware from lavasoft. It's really good. you probably picked up Gator, Gain, or AIM when you downloaded Kazaa or something like it. AA will get rid of it.

Ad aware by Lavasoft is really nice - it's not a popup blocker, but it does search for and destroy spyware entries in the registry, currently running processes, cookies, and applications. It's very nice for maintaining a healthy comp, though you might also need a pop up blocking application to go along with it.

The BEST pop-up killer (and a lot more:

http://www.naviscope.com

Other useful programs:

Free Virus Checker AVG:
http://www.grisoft.com

Free online scan - Add the link to Favourites!
(use in emergencies ot if you think your usual Virus Checker has been nobbled - yes it can even happen to Norton) Disable any other AV software before running:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm

Get rid of SPYWARE(causes you computer to have myriads of popups when surfing and can grind speed to a halt). Use both Spybot AND Adaware (though not at same time):
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?l...&page=download
http://www.tucows.com/preview/236049.html (if this doesn't work, then go to http//:www.lavasoft.de and search from there).

Firewall - e.g. Zonealarm.
You need one of these to stop hackers from getting into your computer and from any trojans you may have contracted from communicating outwards from your PC:
http://www.zonelabs.com

Trojan Remover/Scanner:
http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/download.html

SPAM - Get Mailwasher, it's the best!!
It will bounce SPAM back to the sender, making it look like your addy is defunct. It acts as an intermediary step between the server and your computer and will identify Virus infected mails before they get a sniff of your hard disk. You can delete mail off server (say if someone has sent you a humungous file) and you can create filters too.
http://www.mailwasher.net for the free version
http://www.firetrust.com to buy the pro version (well worth it)

Report Spam if you are getting it to the following:
OSIRUSOFT.COM - they produce blacklists which may email providers use. Domains on their lists will not be allowed to send or relay mail.

Spamcop - http://spamcop.net/anonsignup.shtml
Elsop's Anti Spam page - http://www.elsop.com/wrc/nospam.htm

Use 'em!

for popups:

do 2 things. first, get and run ad-aware. you've probably got gator. gator is responsible for a lot of popups, and these popups have nothing to do with the sites you're visiting. ever gotten a popup on google.com? that's gator.

second, get mozilla or firebird. ALL of those popup-blockers are crap. It's one more program to run, one more program sucking away your system resources. one more thing to wait to load when you start your computer.

also, get a virus scanner. don't go for any of those free ones online. who knows what they do. get either norton antivirus or mcafee virus scan. keep them up to date with their online updates. if you have a virus, let the checker remove it. if you end up with a trojan, well you're fucked. for security's sake you'll have to reformat and reinstall windows; you simply never know what back doors a trojan may have installed.

also, make sure you've got windows update enabled. No software is 100% hackerproof (especially Microsoft's stuff) so don't get caught off-guard because you didn't get the latest update.

another tip: don't read your spam. spammers put special HTML in the spam emails that tells them if you've read the email or not. If you've read the email they know a real-live person will read spam they send to your address and you'll keep getting more and more and more and more...

Ad-muncher. I have tried many many many other pop-up stoppers but ad-muncher is the best. It even gets rid of the annoying banner ads and marquee ads. It works pretty damn well, it's shareware, but the one piece of shareware that is worth buying. Just gotta google it up to find it

I'd just skip all the 'effort' and download another web browser with a built in popup stopper.

Opera, Avant Browser, and Mozilla all work just fine and keep the popups out of your hair.

My opinion is the google toolbar 2 beta is the best popup blocker outside of Mozilla which has that and a form filler built in.

a few people have mentioned firebird, and i just wanted to aid in the pimping by putting a direct link to the installer. despite that it's still in early realease, i may start recommending it to more of my clients, as to default popup blocking really decreases the likelyhood of the user getting spyware. if you surf more han an hour per day on average, you'll notice the speed benefits as well.

http://downloads.mozdev.org/seb/Mozi....6.1-setup.exe

mozilla-proper is a little bulky for most users, i think.

I just recently downloaded the google toolbar, which blocks popup ads and has the added benefit of giving you a google search bar right in the menu bar of your internet explorer browser. dunno if they have a mozilla/netscape version.

Most pop up stoppers either fail to work or ad spyware to your computer, at least in my experience. I would have to say your best bet would be to switch to a browser like Mozzila or Opera and maybe download Ad - Aware and cleanse your computer of spyware.
