Best Sales Lead Generation
Hey all, just starting out in the insurance business and was interested if any sales types out there had suggestions on how to generate sales leads, both free and paid, for all of the general insurance types sold. I have my suspicions that solid A leads for life insurance would be the hardest to generate while the property and casualty types would be a bit easier...
Any Herb Tarleks out there willing to share secrets? Thanks!

Most of the internet leads that I receive are crap, but I work for one of the big guys who have tight underwriting standards. It seems all of the internet leads come from Zynga games like Farmville or Mafia Wars that ask you to get quotes for insurance in return for points. We have tried NetQuote, Agent Insider and one other that I can't remember for Auto and Life leads and got no sales bc the leads were either crap or out of underwriting standards and those were what they called preferred leads. You might try them out yourself, all of the companies will give you like 10 free leads, but if they are crap be sure to cut them off before you spend a lot of money, because it adds up real quick. I've been in the business for 4 months and haven't found one way of generating sales that really works other than actually talking ot people.

As a wholesale broker, all leads lists are crap for me. My clients are all insurance agents themselves, and getting lists of those tends to be an excercise in futility given the sheer number of captive agents on those lists (waste of my time and theirs since they can't deal with me by contract) and the small agencies that don't have the kind of business that I tend to write (I average around $40,000 in premium for GL accounts and probably about the same for Umbrellas). I have to create my own leads.
That said, my clients do a number of things. Some of the more successful ones don't buy leads but do employ marketing companies (one of my biggest clients is using one for a program I created for them). I have no idea how the L&H side of things works (I don't deal with it at all), but on the P&C side the majority of the new business opportunities (new business for my client) is generated by referrals. Like wraithhibn said, the secret is talking to people. Which is what my goal is for today, especially since I just lost 2 huge renewals for February with no replacements in sight.
