getting rid of pigeons on my balcony

i got rid of their nest, i tried spraying my balcony down with wd-40, i have hung CDs so they can move and shine around....nothing. i even hit one of them with a mop....they still keep coming back. my balcony is so full of bird poo i need a shovel.

anyone have any ideas? ive looked on the net and aside from some 50$+ products nothing seems to work.

I had a friend who strung a fine mesh of fishing line along his balcony... You didn't see the line unless you were looking right at it and it kept the birds off...

Super cheap soloution.

Bread your next door neighbors balcony?

On a serious note, im not sure if they sell them anymore, but you can buy a fake owl (used to scare away birds from my old roof) (quite cheap too). It looks a quite bit cheesy, but im sure you place it right, it might work. Yet on a balcony, I don't know.

Just an idea.

Also, you could become one with the birds, and like Home Alone 2, scare little kids with your bird knowledge.

Put a bowl of dry rice out there for them.

Pretty soon there'll be no pigeons left to cause you issues.
The rice absorbs water whilst still in their crop where it's meant to digest.

ah yes pigeons, rats with wings...

do you know why they're coming around in the first place? just a place to roost or is there something else attracting them? If you eliminate the attractiveness then they won't come around! (And please don't do the rice thing... that's just cruel! I'd imagne that'd get you animal abuse too if someone found out about it)

A fake owl will definately work and not just for pigeons. Or at least, it always has for me.

Just be sure to move it around every once in a while. I can't say how intelligent pigeons are, but crows will catch on that it's fake unless you move it around a bit every so often.

The wire will work as well, although I've seen birds rip themselves apart before figuring it out.

the fishing line is the best solution. it doesn't even need to be a mesh. they will keep hitting it and it will drive them crazy and they'll leave. try one tight strand every foot at first then just every 2 feet should work once their numbers decrease.

i'd like to think the owl solution works. but a neighbor of mine has 3 on his roof and there is shit all over it. pigeon shit. pigeons are sitting on the owl, shittin on it.

i too have the same problem. pigeons roost in both of my neighbors roofs. (they have a small hole where the two roofs meet) and they frequently come on my roof. you might not believe it, but sometimes their shit is as big as cat shit. it's all over the place.

i've tried shooting them with a paintball gun. but that doesn't work. i can try the fishing wire one, but it's on my roof so that might not be too safe for me. let me know what works out for you as i would like to get rid of them.

oh yeah, cool thing. we live on the side of a hill and one time, a little hawk came by and nabbed one. it was awesome. i prayed that the hawk would just stay and eat them all. but alas, it left. i wonder if you can put a leash on a hawk and pin it down on your roof.

They have to feel secure there if they intend to nest.
Keep it clear so that they can't hide behind anything and feel safe.
Make them know that you can walk right up to them and they won't nest.

They may still visit. Hardware/home supply stores sell a fishnet type of thing that can be used as a last resort.

good luck.

Remove the shit as I think it tells them this is a safe place...
like hobos marking a site :-)

once they really decide to nest, it will take an air gun or cat to change their mind.

And makes ev'ry Sunday a treat for me.

All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.
Ev'ry Sunday you'll see
My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.

When they see us coming, the birdies all try an' hide,

And maybe we'll do
In a squirrel or two,
While we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We'll murder them all amid laughter and merriment.
Except for the few we take home to experiment.
My pulse will be quickenin'
With each drop of strychnine
We feed to a pigeon.
It just takes a smidgin!
To poison a pigeon in the park.

Here in Florida, a lot of businesses have strips of small spikes on their signs and gas pumps. The spikes are so numerous that the flying disease bags have nowhere to land whithout hitting a spike. Seams to work quite well but it doesn't look very nice. I'm not into animal cruelty but I seriously hate pigeons. I would love to see them eradicated from the earth.

If killing one and hanging the body as an example to others is wrong, I don't want to be right. Pigeons are disgusting vermin. You can respect life and still protect your property from those flying rats.

I'd never considered the fishing line trick. That sounds awesome. Maybe do that, only hang dead ones.

Not that the original poster will see this, but I would like to suggest an alternative to the fake owl. The real thing.

No, seriously.

Check around and see if there are any birds of prey native to your area, some species can do quite well in and around cities (I'm assuming you're in/near a city with the pigeon/balcony problem). Find plans for a box/house for that species and put it up, the rest should take care of itself. That way not only do you solve your pigeon problem you provide a nest site for an animal that very likely needs it.

It would be like killing two birds with one stone.

[couldn't resist]

1. Make a wire mesh roof on your balcony.
2. Set up a camera.
3. Put some bird seed out.
4. Run a high voltage current through it.
5. Record the footage.
6. Watch them rocket off.
7. ???
8. Profit.

WOW! That's good stuff! The owl is a hit or miss thing, maybe moving it around is the trick. As has been mentioned , I've seen poop covered owls and I've seen thirty or forty pigeons on a rooftop with the owl right in the middle.

Shooting is a great solution if you have the time and space. I have a cemetery behind my house so not too many complaints from THOSE neighbors, but at a previous abode the police were called by a bird loving lady several times (pigeons shouldn't even be considered birds!). Just be sure of whats down range before launching a barrage of lead overhead, the pellets that miss may find windshields or children.

Set an oscillating fan on the balcony for a few days with tinsel or streamers in the front grate. Keep a light on at dusk (it will improve your aim).

Bird detrerent spikes can be purchased at Bird Control From Nixalite, The Bird Control Professionals since 1950 or just do a google search for other retailers. you shouldn't have to leave them in place forever, just long enough to change their habits. They work for keeping kids from jumping your fences too!

Good luck!
