PS2 fault reset/repair

Ok, for some reason my PS2 started flashing a red light. The manual says that there's some type of fault due to the flashing red light and you should let the unit cool down and the fault should correct itself. Problem is, the unit was never hot to begin with. It just started faulting out of nowhere. Now, it's continious and the unit is pretty much dead.

Anybody ever had this problem?

Definitely do call Sony. When my PS2 started acting up, Sony fixed it up for free even though it was well past its warranty. I had even already broken the seal on the case in an ill fated attempt to fix the console myself.

Funny, they told me they wanted $80 to fix it, plus shipping. How'd you get that deal?

I guess my problem was more along the lines of something they expected to go wrong. If they're charging you $80 then it must be something a bit more complex.

Yeah, the sony rep was able to determine that from asking two questions...

1. Is the unit plugged in?

2. Is is still flashing a fault light?

Basically, the charge was a flat $80 to just look at it. Additional charge for new parts.

Ugh. Guess I'll just get a new one.

My Ps2 crapped out last year, so I called up sony, and they asked me a bunch of questions, and I must have answered right, because they fixed mine for free.

80 bucks is dumb, just spend ten more to get a new one.

A PS2 is 100 dollars now? damn. I'm gonna hate it buying the next gen consoles a year or so after they're out.

Don't keep me in the dark man, what'd you tell them to get a free fix?

I had one of the original PS2's when they were first released and it died on me about 4 or 5 months ago...I took it to EBgames and they gave me 75 dollars in store credit for it..I used that towards one of the new slim PS2's.

almost sounds like some kind of blown fuse or something...

honestly you might be better off just buying a new one. knowing sony they probably only gave the free fix because it was something that should've been recalled (considering the first generation ps2's had a habit of dying about 6 months after they were bought. PS2's have been known to be pretty cheap). Everything else they overcharge for. have a 4 yr old sony dvd player, barely used that skips on brand new CDs. they wan't $140 to look at it. not including shipping to texas which is about 4 states away from me.

sounds like something they know they should fix for free, but would rather have your money. Honestly it sounds like your probably might even end up saving money just buying a new one.

When I 1st read this thread i was totally satisfied with my PS2, and thinking "that really sucks for that guy, mine's working perfectly"...About one day later, I was playing San An, and PS2 starts going crazy...Making A LOT of noise (that loud CD spinning noise, but very bad-sounding) and San An was working less well, slowing down, and i often got the screen GTA: San Andreas Disc is not working properly, yadayadayada, for like 5 seconds until it came back to the game...It was a very choppy noise.
Maybe the PS2 was overheating..I dunno, I just hope everything's fine.

99% of the problems they fix(ed) for free were due to the disk read error.

This was MOSTLY a problem on older first generation systems and was cause by some sort of mis alignment with the laser while trying to read a PS2 disk. This problem became VERY perevelant with the release of EverQuest Online Adventures: Frontiers a lot of systems stareter canking out on them when this game hit, no one knows why. They will walk you through a diagnosis on the phone to determine if it is a DRE or not. My advice would be to call and say this is the problem you are having, they will have you do a self test and some other stuff each time just say that the error pops up or it does nothing at all, and see if this works on getting it fixed for free. I had this happen to my first gen one and it was fixed free of charge minus the few bucks it cost me to send it to the service center in PA. I got it back and it worked fine for a couple weeks then did it again, lo and behold another phone call and it was fixed free of charge yet again.

That leads me to believe that the disk read error was a problem they know about but will not say is a problem just like the new slim line ones overheating due to the lack of cooling to keep the system so small and skinny.

My first gen system is just fine since the 2nd repair and as a matter of fact I am in the middle of a game of God of War while I am typing this.

I got mine the very first day they came out and have played the shit out of it ever since, so the system is somewhat durable.

San ANdreas was where my PS2 first crapped out on me, too. I went onto the GameFAQs forums and found that I wasn't alone. That game brought out the faults in a lot of systems.

Rockstar does it again! such an innovative game, it detects your PS2 problems .lol.
I do remember my PS2 effing up once before San An, though. I had bought Tekken Tag Tournament, which worked fine for a while, and then after a while it wouldn't even boot anymore. weirdness ....

I remember (this was three years ago or so) my PS2 died. It was one of t he release day models that were pretty buggy. Unfortunately I didn't call Sony. I suspect I could have picked up a free fix since it was the Disc Read Error that a lot of people with the original models have had.

It took me about 5 tries with the gear but I got GTA VC and others to boot on the PS2 again.Just follow those instructions and have patience and it works.

Did you get a red flashing fault light? Or were you certain that it was a DRE?
