Amerika by Franz Kafka “As Karl Rossman, a poor boy of sixteen who had been packed off to America by his parents because a servant girl had seduced him and got herself a child by him, stood on the liner slowly entering the harbour of New York, a sudden burst of sunshine seemed to illumine the Statue of Liberty, so that he saw it in a new light, although he had sighted it long before. The arm with the sword rose up as if newly stretched aloft, and round the figure blew the free winds of heaven.” Last edited by T.U.B.; 05-23-2005 at 02:53 AM.. |

Learning curve straight up, I must say... I'm enjoying the immense freedom in this game (I'm a recon/trader kind of guy instead of war/fighting) but i'm still doing a lot of "guess-where-this-button-is-for"-ing

yep - installed it, ran the instant action thing, now can't figure out how to get the ship to move or what I'm supposed to do. Maybe I like my games with a touch more tutorial built in...

I played my first BC game back in the late 1990s. I've tried BCM and found it very difficult. The idea behind it is so good that I've given the various versions (which seem to have a tradition of winding up "free") a try and found them all to be way way too hard to master.
Derek Smart is a very controversial guy. He was looking to buy a game engine (Freespace I think, from Interplay) a few years ago and the fans went nuts. He can be a bit of a prig at times but in my dealings with him back when I purchased the original BC game he was professional and helpful when providing support via email. Even when I had an issue that was clearly covered in a readme or FAQ. It's nonetheless an interesting game and I certainly haven't played this patched up version. I'm told this makes it an entirely new experience. I'd love to hear feedback from anyone who "mastered" this game or who tries it out now that this one is free too.

I downloaded it, tried to install it, but I got an error message that said a file or files were corrupted. I didn't bother to download it again.
Is it really worth the effort?

Back in high school (back in 1997) I played the original game (BC3k), which has also been released as a free game rather prolifically. Admittedly, I only played the demo for BCM years ago, but it left me neither here or there. Then again, I burned myself out on the original. I suppose saying Smart is controversial is the kindest way to put it. The man's ego is as big as all outdoors. His dealings with the FSCP (Freespace Source Code Project) still leaves me bitter.
If memory serves, the tutorial is a 30+ page PDF file. Now, I haven't downloaded the demo either, but knowing Smart's constant reply of "RTFM" it has to be there. There's no way to play the game straight out without printing it and referencing it. BCM is the kind of game where every key on the keyboard does something, along with various SHIFT+, ALT+, and SHIFT+ALT combos. I will say that it's not a particularly intuitive interface, but I got used to it. There is no tutorial which will lead you through the major systems and interface, only the PDF file.

This is a game I've wanted to try for ages, and now that I have it I can't figure out much of it, or even most of it.
It says it has a tutorial but its pretty worthless (ingame) and the manual that ships with the free one seems a bit small for something as complex as it is. I'll have to search and see if there is a good walk through type site out there just to get things moving.
