World Of Warcraft Vs Everquest 2
The thread title pretty much explains this thread. Which game do you think is better for someone that is new to MMORPG...but a veteran of regular RPG's.
Currently I am leaning towards WoW, as the system requirments are much better, and to be honest, I think blizzards a great gaming company, and have never been disapointed with anything they do. I tried Star Wars galaxies, and did not like that much at all. Seemed boring, and really just...not fun. So, what should I consider, research, etc. Thanks for your input! |

i haven't played eq2, but i played some eq1. wow is much better, imho. plus, as you mentioned, i'd rather give my cash to blizzard because they rock. and yes the game plays excellently even on systems under the minimum system requirements level. there are somethings from other mmorpgs i've seen that i kind of yearn to be implemented here, but you can't have everything.
on the subject of it being boring, i've never been on and not had something specific to do. there's just so isn'to do (right now, at least), if i'm not doing something specifically for a quest, its to better my char in some other way that isn't standard mindless xping or clicking. i've never run out of quests and if i do right now, i know exactly where to go to find more. there's just so much. |

I've played the WoW open beta and I've played EQ2 on a friend's computer. I definately enjoyed WoW more. That said, I don't think I'll be playing either, because the monthly charge doesn't sit well with me.

EQ2 is very tough on the machine. Don't buy it unless you have at least a gigabyte of RAM. A graphics card that hasn't seen its first birthday wouldn't hurt either.
I'll be buying WoW soon, although I'm playing EQ2 now. EQ2 is a very thrilling game out of the starting blocks but around level 20 it becomes very much an experience grind. I like PvP combat a lot, and although the cartoony graphics of WoW are something of a turnoff, I know I'm going to be able to run them a lot cleaner than I can EQ2's. With 512 MB of RAM and a Radeon 9600, the more densely populated places in EQ2 become slideshows after an hour or so of play. The guild system in WoW is also a lot more interesting.

I'm going with the crowd on this one, Stare. It's the truth. WoW is just more damn fun than EQ or EQ2. Blizzard has once again, after many delays, put out a damn fine game. I played through Closed Beta, Stresstest Beta, Open Beta, and now retail, and I gotta say, even after starting my characters over 4 different times, I'm still having an exceedingly good time. I sure as hell can't say that with EQ. I played that crap for a solid year and hated it. I hated everything about it, including the fact that I couldn't stop playing it because it was so damn addictive.
WoW is addictive, but for none of the same reasons that EQ is. It's addictive plainly based on the facts that it is both 1)good and 2)fun. Hope this helps.

Looks like i'm in the minority here, but my vote has to go with EQ2. I played WoW Stress Test and I couldn't get into it at all. It just seems to me that WoW is more of a single player game with some grouping thrown in, while EQ2 is a very group oriented game with some soloing in it. I think both games are very similar and it's mainly just personal taste though

WOW vs EQ2
Hi all!
I have played both of these fine mmp games, and I liked them both. I chose EQ2 to pay for..(I played both in beta)...because of a few reasons. One, EQ2 is probably one of the most best looking games I have ever seen. It is not as good looking as HL2, but its close in some repects. WOW I was not impressed with, it was very cartoony. Now thats not bad, because if your system is a year or two old, it will run well on it. EQ2 was designed for tomorrows hardware. I have never even seen a 526 meg videocard, but some of the higher settings suggest to only turn them on if you have one. My machine is almost a year old, but was top of the line, and the water effects in EQ2 are beautiful. From seeing splashs as you walk through the water, to seeing your reflection and spell effects reflected in the water. Another reason is the gameplay. It has not been the constant kill, kill, kill. I quested my way to 15th level in beta alone. WOW does have quests, but they did not hold my interest. I made it to about 10th level. I am finding more and more things daily that I didnt know about EQ2, so its possible I didnt come across them in WOW but would have. Most likely both of these games will become a grind at higher levels, but its possible with the tradeskills, and society quests in EQ2 that this will be minimized. One last important thing. The update program for WOW was based on torrent client. While I love torrents, many routers cannot handle the massive port flooding that is associated with them. Your average joe is not going to know how to set up ports to speed up thier downloads. EQ2 uses pretty much the same update process that EQ1 does. I have never had a problem with it. Just my opinion, if anyone has any specific questions on EQ2 feel free to ask me. Happy Questing... RANSOM |

Go for WoW, I'm a little biased, but it just has more things going for it. Like the fact its Blizzard, and they pretty much have the best leveling/quest system around.
And as far as the monthly fee, think of it this way, its like $0.50 a day, so if you even play an hour a day (and most prob play on avg 2 hours a day), an hours worth of entertainment is worth 50 cents easily. And if you're thinking, but what about the initial 50 bucks, well you get a month free, and I dont know about you, but say HL2 I beat in 2 weeks, it was still worth the money, but it lasted even less than a month (tho it does have multi which is why its worth it to me, but there are many offline games that are 50 too) |

I wish WoW had a bigger emphasis on group gameplay and I wish the graphics were better. Other than that WoW is a damn good game. Oddly enough, it's not as addictive as EQ...I think it has something to do with the style. I'd prefer a more realistic style like EQ2 moreso than WoW's.

i'd like to clear a few things up:
1) i've done nothing but group to complete my quests. up to a certain point, its hard not to. its do-able, but things certainly get tougher. i've grouped with my friends since i was able to reach them (i started dwarf, one guy started night elf, etc., we all start in different areas). 2) questing in WoW is the central way to gain levels. sure you can xp if you want. but i've never gone out of a city with intent to gain xp and not been on a quest (directly or indirectly) or searching for a quest to do. some of the quests are easy and/or mudane. some are original, though, and quite captivating. 3) sure, wow is kind of cartooney, but i still thoroughly enjoy the graphics. i'd much rather play wow knowing they spent more time on content than graphics, but maybe thats just me. |

Well I haven't played EQ or EQ2 but I'm totally hooked on the storyline the Blizzard has maintained from Warcraft, Warcraft 2, Warcraft 3 (and their respective expansions) and now I'm totaly addicted to WoW. Solo play is fun and if you find yourself stuck in an area with tough enemies there always seems to be other players you can group with for the short time to get through that rough spot.
As for the "cartoony" graphics, I think they fit perfectly with all that has come before with the Warcraft titles. Just my two cents but I say WoW all the way!

I bought WoW, and I agree that it is awesome. Though my install process took forever, it was worth the wait, this game rules! Runs great on my old system, and looks damn good to. Can't wait to spend many sleepless nights playing WoW!

Played on WoW beta still think DAoC blows them both away, Mythic has both the PvP and PvE systems down, with the new release of catacombs which allows a group their own personal dungeon and new classes this is the mmorpg to play.
Funny how Wow has alot of the same content as DAoC, wonder where they got their ideas?

I've been thinking about getting on the WoW train. I recently bought a new iBook and I think it meets the min system reqs. The only thing really stopping me is how much of a timesink a MMORPG is with little payoff. I mean, I don't want to spend two months running around smacking rats just to make it to level 2.
I also wish it had a demo version I could d/l and play for a week or a month or so. I really liked that about Anarchy Online, even though I ended up not sticking with it because I found it boring. Are there any plans for a demo or do I have to plunk down $50 just to see if I like it? |

Furthermore, WoW comes with a free month subscription. Just put down the $40 and try it out. If you don't like it, you might be able to find a friend, ebay, or craigslister that'l buy it.

WoW is a relatively quicker game. I've played both to around level 20 (of 50 for EQ2, 60 for WoW) and it didn't take me half the time it did to get there on WoW as it did in EQ2. Scads of 'hardcore' players have already maxed out their characters in WoW, while it just hasn't happened yet in EQ2. Even the comparitively casual players that have been on board since release are higher in WoW than they are in EQ2, and the EQ2 players had a couple weeks' head start.
WoW is a lot more conductive to solo play, too, which is a lot more conductive to short gaming sessions. I can see a few-hours-a-week'er getting to mid-level and most of the game's non-hardcore content on WoW much easier than I can on EQ2.
