PSP price has been released!
"The day has finally come: Over at TechJapan, we've got a translation of a Japanese BB Watch article stating that Sony has announced the Playstation Portable will cost 20,790 yen (about $195 USD) and is to be released on December 12th. Also, the battery life is quoted as being 4 to 6 hours. Not exactly what I'd call fantastic, but at this price, looks like Nintendo is in for some serious competition. Free your doubts about software too, as Sony has announced 21 titles will be released in December as well. Here's the official Japanese PDF press release regarding the PSP's release."
http://games.slashdot.org/ Thank god its under 200, or even 300, I'm glad they have kept it at a decent price, only 50 more than the DS and has 21 lauch titles, unlike the DS's 6. DS is gonna be great but the PSP has WAY more to offer. Including new newly announced spin off for FF7, the 4th spin off. "Square Enix officially announced the fourth installment of Final Fantasy VII based media. The film Advent Children, the games Before Crisis, Dirge of Cerberus and now Crisis Core. This new RPG will for the Sony PSP and has been scheduled for release in 2006." Enjoy.

i would only pay $200 if there was UMD anime available..
this is probably not going to happen for quite a while so i'll probably have to wait for the price to drop..

wow, 200 bucks?
I'm betting Sony is eating about 70 bucks for every PSP sold. However, I think that getting a bigger installed base from the beginning is a smart business decision. Especially considering how massive a corporation Sony is, they have more than enough resources to absorb the shock. For the hardware that you're getting, two hundred bucks for a PSP is chump change. I'd say there is a decent chance the DS launches at 100 in response. Sony is really being aggresive here. Official battery life has been announced also. 4-6 hours. Ouch.

Why are people surprised that it's $200?
I doubt they're eating $70 per unit sold. How would you make money? It's probably a lot cheaper than you think it is to make one, especially considering the technology is already 6+ years old (PS2 development started.. when, '98? Probably before that..) The PS2 itself is currently $150, and the new PS2 coming out is WAYYYY smaller. So.. shrink it just a bit more, I can understand the $195 price tag. [edit] Think of it this way... XBox is, what, $150? It has.. a PIII 800 and an 8 gig drive, right? You could put that together yourself for well under $100. Mass produce them at the level they are, the price drops significantly.

what makes this a good idea? Sony makes excellent margins on each game sold. Also, everytime a PSP is purchased it makes it likely that one more DS won't be sold. great initial market penetration to begin with will give Sony dibs on a greater share of the handheld profits to be had for the duration of the system cycle.

Yeah but... you forget that the XBox was released 3 years ago. The technology is old and doesn't cost nearly as much to make as it used to. Same w/ the PS2.
I see it as.. there's no new technology here. Like I said, PSP is a portable PS2, which itself is 5-6 year old technology. They're just making it smaller, and considering how old it is, it shouldn't be a problem. 4-5 years ago, I don't even think the top of the line CPU broke 1ghz. If it did, it wasn't much beyond that. Look at the technology today.. almost bordering on 4 ghz. Hell, my laptop that's 2 years old has an Athlon XP 2100 in it. I'm sure that could easily be shrunk and put into a PDA sized device of sorts without any additional cost of what the big was one a few years prior. The DS is cheap, of course, because the technology in it is almost 10 years old (N64).

Most electrical companies either lose money or price their products at a high price due to producing costs, and the initial costs of building factories and development fees, after a few years however, when factories are no longer being built, and no more development is going on for the hardware, they can afford to just pay for the materials, and thus start making profits later...
Hrmm this lower priced PSP thing is serioulsy gonna f*ck up Nintendo DS's market entrance... no consumer will buy a DS after they see the leap of technology from a DS to a PSP for just 50 bucks... kind of sucks for Nintendo... man.. Now i cant decide waht to get either... I was getting really excited for Advance Wars DS... blaarg.. i wish i were rich..
