Are any of the Myst sequels entertaining?
There's been a few sequels since the original Myst released in 93. I think Myst 4 actually came out a month ago. Are they enjoyable? I think it's kind ofweird that they introduced actual people and animals in the latter versions; I kind of liked being alone in the worlds.
Thanks for any insight -T

The first shipment of Myst 4 came with a copy of Myst 3 and was $40. At $20 a pop, the two games are quite worth the buy. Myst is really the only classic adventure series that has flourished since the turn of the millenium. Even though the gaming world has pretty much moved on, the quality of the series is undeniable.
Neither sequels can quite capture the magic of the original, though. If you haven't played it, drop what you're playing and pick up the masterpiece edition. It's great.

Riven was... impossible.
Myst was cool because you had a chance. Riven was like... ? Seriously, undecipherable. To this day I can't get anywhere in that game (and I'm good at puzzle type stuff). I have Myst 4, but haven't played much of it.

Myst 1, now you all know what a marvel that was. Riven, incredibly hard but worth the effort, has one of the greatest atomospheres in a game ever. Myst 3: Exile... don't bother, weak story, weak puzzles and weak execution, forget it. Uru, a good game in it's own right but definately doesn't feel like a Myst game, pass on this one too. Myst 4: Revelation, seriously, I'm at a point right now where I'm thinking that it's possibly better than Myst and Riven! I'll wait until I finish it but as of now it's amazing and definately worth the wait and lives up to the standard part 1 and 2 set. You must buy this game if you love(d) Myst.... Seeing Sirrus and Achenar back is worth the price alone.

Riven was impressive, gorgeous, and quite tough. Exile I wasn't impressed with. I haven't gotten around to Revelation yet, but it's on the list somewhere.

I like Revelation. I've only played a demo of it, but I really did enjoy what I played of it. It looks beautiful, and goes back to the classic Myst slideshow, but updates it a little bit. I dunno, check it out if you're interested.

Seriously, the more I think about this, the more it bothers me... to this DAY I haven't beaten a single puzzle in Riven.
And not 3 months goes by when I think to myself, "I should load it back up and give it another shot"... but then I think of all the RANDOM switches and crap that has no immediate correlation to anything whatsoever, then I weep. I know there's a solution to it all, obviously, but jesus... I mean... you get to the part with the lake, turn the boiler thing off, go into the tunnels, put the pebbles/food type stuff on the "scale" lookin thing, something jumps, but really, nothing happens. So you're all, "great, I just spent this time getting somewhere that's really gotten me nowhere." Or the part with the "whirlpools" in the water where you travel under them in the oven-looking vehicle... got nowhere with that. There's something there, alright, but... yeah, wtf? I know I could look up the solutions, but damn, even after 7 years I still feel that'd be a major cop-out to this game. ONE DAY. Maybe 10 years from now I'll figure it out, haha. At least in Myst you had CLUES... like "hm, this BOAT IN THE WELL looks like the damn boat in the lake over there... well, what are these SYMBOLS for?" or the clocktower/tree thing. Not immediately obvious, but again, not entirely impossible or complex.

Riven is a bitch, true. But it's also the largest adventure. I used the UHS a fair bit, a couple of hints now and then add more than they take away. IMO, anyway. Myst 3 was great, the puzzles weren't too hard (compared to Riven, anyway). Haven't played the first nor fourth yet, though.

I got the 3rd game free with my PC. It was Ok.. you needed to read the books to complete the puzzles and such. But it really hurt my eyes! The 3d world wasn't built right, something in it just made you feel sick. I think it's the way the sides kinda bend, but it doesn't work.
The movement is odd. It's a 3d view from each spot, but you can only stand in certain spots! I only played it once.. no really will to play it anymore. |

Myst, one of the games I so love, I always get the collectors edition when they come out
I wasnt too impressed with what I got as 'extra' with the Revelation pack, but oh well, the game is worth it all the way. With Revelation, the bit thing that I've noticed is the interaction with the world around you. Rather than just click on an object and having a cinematic load, you turn the handles, pull open doors, turn pages in books. That what made it more impressive for me The puzzles in four are definetly up to standard, I'm currently stuck on a few, mainly the toneing puzzle on Spire, the answer is there, I'm pretty sure, I'll just have to look for it.

I really liked Uru. A lot of people thought it wasn't 'Myst' like because of the perspective change, but I think it reall added a lot to it. They just released a special package deal with the original as well as the redone online content that they canceled (To D'Ni) and the expansion pack (Path of the Shell) for like $35 at Best Buy.

A friend and I are playing through the whole series in order. We're just waiting to get a hold of End of Ages.
Myst: Classic, immersive, not too hard. Riven: Really freakin difficult. Amazing world design. Surreal, immersive. Exile: Myst 3 was commissioned by Cyan to another studio, and, although they clearly put a lot of work into it, it is nothing on the others. Too easy, too short, weak story. We solved this game in one day. Unimpressed. Revelation: Stunning. Stunning, stunning, fucking stunning. Stunning. Gives new meaning to 'immersive'. Cyan are back in the driver's seat and this game blew me away.

and so? are you playing Riven on XP? Can it be installed with no problem? Given that the game was designed with Windows 95 in mind?

It can be done, yeah. It was simple on my machine, can't speak for everyone tho.
I was running it like this: Install the game (vanilla), and then find all the very large files on each disk, in the folder "Data" and put them in a folder "Data" in your Riven directory. Find the main Riven executable and flick on compatibility for '95. And you're away, and you dont have to change the disks between islands. www.mystworlds.com is bound to have more information if that doesnt work. Luck.
