I'm not sure about the Pure thing. Maybe it's a filter to make all non-modded servers show?
I suggest you visit www.desertcombat.com and take a look at their Desert Combat mod. It's the best mod to ever grace a FPS. It makes BF 1942 so much funner. All it does is simply use the same levels of BF1942 (plus new ones created by the DC staff) and update them with weapons and vehicles from Desert Storm. Try it out...you won't go back to regular BF1942. -Lasereth

Been playing BF for the last year, and still prefer the original game over DC, EoD Forgotten Hope and the other mods. There's a ton of good servers out there for vanilla BF. DC is a magnet for idiots.
Check out the servers of Paradigm, uT or some of the other clan servers for a great challenge. These clans also admin their servers - unlike EA servers, which are full of morons. |

I love Forgotten Hope, easily my favorite mod.
As for pure servers? There are some mods that change skins, sounds and add blood but can still played on regular BF 1942 servers. The best known one is probably Merciless Creations addon. It really was awesome. Sadly, the pure servers pretty much killed this addon. Great in the day though. |

I too am new to this game. I am just starting into the steep learning curve of 1942 and DC. My question is can you have more than one mod laaded at one time? I have DC loaded now and I would like to try some of the others. Thanks.

You can only "load" one mod at a time, but you can have multiple mods "installed". Run the installer of each mod you'd like to be able to play, and then follow the above suggestion: either load the mod via the usually supplied shortcut or by choosing "custom" in BF1942's main menu.

Stupid question: How do I use my mini map????? I get killed, chose a spawning point, chose a vechile but then I have no idea where I should be headed. Most of the time I head into the wrong direction. Is there some way to manipulate or access the minimap so I know where to go? Much appreciated. Thanks
P.S. The manual is little help as it doesn't really cover this.

You can hit N to zoom in and out on the minimap, and M to bring it up to just about full screen, then just ride out to the base you wanna go to.

My review of BF1942: I have only been playing this game a few days and it seems to have a large following. It's...............OK. Its fun, etc. but I have a few problems with it. The whole respawning thing drives me absolutely fucking batty. I hate having to wait 20 seconds in order to play again. What the hell is the point? Second, the controls for the vehicles (especially the flight type) are atrocious. The combat areas are so big that you are forced to use a vehicle (either that or spend five minutes walking) just to get to the fighting. Are these deal-breakers? Possibly (especially the respawning thing. God that pisses me off). Just thought I would share.

The spawn time depends on the server. If I create servers, I make the spawn time 5-10 seconds. 20 seconds is longer than average. I wouldn't play on a server with 20 second spawn times.
The controls on the vehicles are what Battlefield 1942 are famous for (especially the airplanes). They're nearly perfect. The airplane controls are simply unrivalled. One thing to point out: it takes a TON of practice to fly them. It took me a month of playing to be able to fly a plane decently. Once ya "get the hang of it" (and yes, I did simply open BF one day and found myself flying good), the controls are absolutely amazing. Even harder to master are the helicopters in the Desert Combat mod. The harder it is to learn, the better they are for masters. Trust me, when I first played it, I was frustrated because I kept getting my ass kicked by the airplane physics. Keep practicing and you'll get the hang of it...and be dive bombing tanks in no time! Play on servers with shorter spawn times as well...I can't stand that 20 second crap. -Lasereth

Anyhow, back to the original question: Pure means that if i'm running a battlefield server at version 1.6 and have pure enabled, then only those connecting with the same version will be allowed to play.

Most online FPS take a while to get good at. There's stages in FPS. I've narrowed the Battlefield 1942 stages down pretty specifically:
Stage 1: can kill a few people online, but crash the planes ASAP. Stage 2: can kill more people than the amount of times you die. Can get from point A to point B in a plane, but can't dogfight. Stage 3: known as one of the people on the team that gives it a good chance of winning. Can dive bomb with the planes and dogfight. Point ratio is 5-1 at least (gets 5 points before dying). Stage 4: If this person is on a team, they're probably gonna win. Can use every weapon in the game to its full extent. Damn good in all aircraft. Can land the planes, dive bomb, dogfight, and ram the airplanes into other people or aircraft without dying. Point ratio is 10-1 (gets 10 points before dying). Ya just gotta go through stages. Every stage is fun, even though I practiced a LOT in single-player before I played online (great idea). DICE (the developers) designed the game for hardcore FPS players. Non-hardcore FPS players might find the vehicle learning curve way too steep. I've got friends that are damn good at FPS but can't fly a fucking Desert Combat Apache for their life. Maybe it's not your type of game! When I was having the learning-fest of the airplanes in BF, I played everyday because I wanted to be good at the planes. By the end of a few weeks, I was kicking ass in the planes. Ya just gotta understand the physics engine perfectly. It does take a lot of time, but if ya ask me, it's worth it. I thought it was fun as hell to learn to fly the planes in Battlefield 1942. If ya think the planes are hard, wait until you try the helicopters in Desert Combat. I've never played any FPS that's came close to the fun I've had with Battlefield 1942, the Desert Combat mod, and Battlefield Vietnam. -Lasereth

5-10sec spawn times drives me batty! Try playing DC CTF where the flag cap point is in the middle of enemy spawn territory. You no sooner cap a guy that he's respawning next to you and killing you. LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMME!

Yeah, I TK'ed someone (completely by accident)on this one server, and I had a 2-minute spawn time afterwards. It sucked.
