The controls on the vehicles are what Battlefield 1942 are famous for (especially the airplanes). They're nearly perfect. The airplane controls are simply unrivalled. One thing to point out: it takes a TON of practice to fly them. It took me a month of playing to be able to fly a plane decently. Once ya "get the hang of it" (and yes, I did simply open BF one day and found myself flying good), the controls are absolutely amazing.
Even harder to master are the helicopters in the Desert Combat mod. The harder it is to learn, the better they are for masters.
Trust me, when I first played it, I was frustrated because I kept getting my ass kicked by the airplane physics. Keep practicing and you'll get the hang of it...and be dive bombing tanks in no time! Play on servers with shorter spawn times as well...I can't stand that 20 second crap.

Far by it of me to disagree with Lasereth because he so knowlegable about all things computer but a month's learning curve is absolutely outrageous. If its takes you a month (a month!!!!) to learn how to master the controls of a game that means that they were not designed very well. At most it should take a player an hour, if that, to master the games controls. Not the game itself, by no means, but the simple basics and physics of movement. Granted, I don't have very much patience but that seems extreme. Concerning the respawn time: I haven't played online yet (I don't want to play online until I at least learn the basics. The game has been out so long that everyone playing online has got to be pretty good), I have just been playing the Single Player campaigns. If there is a way to change or alter the respawns in the game, I will poke around and investigate some. I have so many friends that say that this game rocks so I will continue to investigate and play. Thanks
