I'm working on a City of Heroes fansite at the moment. It's still coming together content-wise so if anyone is interested in consistently contributing something to it, let me know.

The site: No Frills CoH

BigGov 04-14-2004 03:40 AM

God dammit, now I really want this game.

I gotta get my ass in gear and order myself that computer.

BigGov 04-14-2004 02:47 PM

I have a question:

The "power sets" on the website, can you choose only one, or can you have many?

You can have one primary and one secondary power set. Later on you get to choose a third and fourth power set from a third "neutral" pool which includes things like flying, super-jumping, teleportation, and stealth.

BigGov 04-14-2004 05:57 PM

Hmm...A katana wielding martial arts master that sneaks around stealthily and teleports?

I really want my new PC now :(

seretogis 04-15-2004 04:08 PM

I have a CoH screenshot gallery up on my coh site, if some of you other CoH-beta-players want to upload some shots of your antics.

seretogis 04-17-2004 02:55 AM

Update: The articles section is up and fully functional. You can submit FAQs, guides, opinion articles/reviews, or anything offtopic. Currently I only have a few Cryptic-provided articles listed, but hopefully we'll get some good third-party submissions soon. :)

I got invited to CoH beta a month and a half ago. Slipped by me. Patching right now, going to name my character "Qlop," unless some goober took it.

Such a cool game. Punching someone 30 feet into the air is delicious.

seretogis 04-17-2004 09:50 PM

Your char looks a little like a WWE wrestler. :D

You should read up on the general info articles linked above if you haven't already -- they provide a lot of info that isn't available to beta players, since there is no manual.

BigGov 04-17-2004 09:58 PM

Wow, the sidekick-mentor feature will be great for rushing people. I just ordered my computer parts from Newegg today so I should be able to play April 28th :D

I think he's neato. I wish I had a chest like that, and a snazzy costume.

And super powers...

BigGov 04-18-2004 03:42 PM

Are the characters from the beta going to be carried over to the full version, or will they be deleted?

They get wiped on the 22nd of April. The servers open up that day I think, but only people who pre-ordered the game will have access. The rest wait until the 25th, when it's released.

So you get a head start as a pre-order.

seretogis 04-18-2004 04:20 PM

I believe the game is released on the 28th, which would mean chars are wiped on the 25th. Pre-ordering peoples get a three-day head start.

BigGov 04-18-2004 04:53 PM

I thought it was going to be released on the 28th too but according to GameFAQs it's going to be released on the 25th now. Don't know if it was moved up or if I just can't read.

All servers are wiped on the 22.

Somehow Pre-order accounts will get to reserve a name on the server/servers. This is still being worked out.

Pre-order people get a 3 day head start starting on the 25. Everyone else get's in (If they buy the game, and the game is actually on store shelves) on the 28.

Phaenx 04-19-2004 09:17 AM

They said they're wiping on the 22nd last I looked, which wasn't more then a couple days ago.

Anyhow, if you're going to pre-order, do it from gamestop. They're the only ones who had the foresight to send you the information via e-mail.

Phaenx 04-19-2004 09:25 AM

You guys want to start a super group for launch? I'm going to hit Justice server with some friends, so we could be set pretty good for leveling teams and such.

I have pre-order too, so if anyone wants to hook up on Justice and level that weekend before launch let me know.

Plan9Senior 04-19-2004 10:31 AM

I feel the game will have absolutley no holding power. Don't waste your money. The only plus that it has is that it is different then the current mmorpgs. The negatives are too numerous to start writing down but I will give you a few game killers: No Player vs. Player combat, No playable bad guys, stuck with same looking toon forever (no costume customization after char creation), no loot, and a very weak quest system. I will stop right there because those are the resons I won't be playing. For all those interested in it, here are some funny screenshots of some characters you can whip up...

Yeah, I saw the power rangers and a bunch of mortal kombat characters running through atlas yesterday.

Then I saw "Santa Clawz." That one was good.

bltzkriegmcanon 04-19-2004 06:42 PM

Amazing. Simply amazing.

This will be true at release, but Cryptic has confirmed that they will be working supervillians (playable heroes, turned bad) into the game -- perhaps in the first expansion. Note that every mmorpg that has started off completely focused on pvp has been an absolute failure. However, if Cryptic can work up a PvP system as polished and immersive as the PvE side of the game, it will be a success and a lot of fun.

This isn't quite true -- you can customize your costume with a supergroup color scheme, post char-creation. Cryptic is also including general costume customization in a later patch, at the expense of influence (gold).

no loot,
In the three years that I played EverQuest, never was loot a "good" thing about the game. It was the source of drama and idiocy on the part of the player-base, 90% of the time. Having no loot was a fantastic idea on behalf of Cryptic, and I'm glad that they stuck with the decision despite the whining of the wannab-uber power-gamers to the contrary.

Weak? How? The quests/missions in CoH are more dynamic and entertaining than any I've taken part in from EverQuest or DAOC. There is definitely some repitition if you do the same missions over and over, but that is why you don't. If you've done a few "rescue the scientist" missions, then do a sewer one instead to change the pace.

Maveric 04-20-2004 01:10 PM

there's a clones/rippoffs/homage thread in the beta forums in which i posted numerous pics of various well known heroes and even some special guests like Fat Albert and Gilligan.

There is some new important launch info / head-start info here. Be sure to read it if you want a name reserved!

seretogis 04-22-2004 04:08 AM

I, and the group I play with, will be playing on Justice or Victory, so c'mon over when the game launches.

Hrothgar 04-23-2004 12:47 AM

looks good and all but EQ still has me in its clutches.

The group I'm going to be with just changed their minds and went with Victory too.

Wish they would have told me before servers went down so I could reserve my name.

dragonhawk 04-23-2004 12:32 PM

Guess What they announced...

City of Villains —Want to play the bad guy in Paragon City? You'll get your chance in Cryptic Studios' City of Villains , currently under development and to be shown in limited play at E3. While City of Heroes ( www.cityofheroes.com ) is ready for an April 28 launch, Cryptic developers already are working on the first major expansion to the game that will allow players to take on the role of villain in Paragon's modern metropolis. Turn the tide on all the heroes and heroines and lead your crime syndicate into battle in the impressive 3D backdrop of Paragon City

We're going to Victory as well.

I'll be on Virtue...

Haha, I told the CoH forum goobers this would happen. You know what they told me? "It's called city of heroes! not city of villians!"

Haha, yeah, that's hilarious. I think that the massive amount of whining will be reduced once the public boards are shut down and the 11 year olds who can't afford $15/mo are shut out from the discussion.

seretogis 04-28-2004 05:21 AM

Level 13 Defender on Victory = me!

cradeg 04-28-2004 10:20 PM

if i start this i am sure i would drop it when WoW or EQ2 would come out, i guess i save me the cash

d3f1 04-29-2004 12:11 AM

Hey, what did you expect. They are releasing the aspect of being able to play a villan so they can leech more money from us. Personally I think it should have been included. Then they could have expanded on it. As in land wars, or something along those lines.

Btw go play AO ( Anarchy Online ) The game has changed a lot !!!

flagpole 04-29-2004 10:23 AM

Cryptic didnt include player villians from the start because they want to get it working properly before they introduce it.
Of course, they COULD have gone the AO route, released a buggy, barely playable piece of shit and then beg people to come back to it in a year with special offers and old account reactivations for low low prices, because they finally made it work like it should have done at launch.

Wow, guess i'm kind of bitter, huh?

killklaus 05-01-2004 12:37 AM

I found the game to be tedious just like other mmorpgs. I spent more time creating my hero than leveling them up.

Moskie 05-01-2004 04:38 AM

I got myself a Controller on Freedom, named Effector. Anyone else on Freedom?

I like the game so far. I have to give it some more time, though, as I'm just now getting some interesting powers. This is my first real experience with an MMORPG, so I can't really compare it to much else.

Creating my character was the most fun part, so far. I'm having to force myself to concentrate on the one I've made, instead of trying to make new ones.

Nikilidstrom 05-02-2004 05:19 PM

Ive got a scrapper on Justice.

The game is a little repetitive, and the environments aren't very interactive. It does get alot more fun when you group up, but it just seems to be missing something that would give its own identity. Maybe it just needs a better feel of continuity between missions, so it doesn't feel like your typical dungeon (or city in this case) crawl.
