City of Heroes

Anyone else trying this game out? I got accepted into presale beta yesterday, haven't had any time to play other than create my hero because of class/work. But it looks really good and I've heard great things from other friends in it.

Mantus 03-31-2004 11:02 AM

I dont think it has PvP...and I think you have to be a lame good guy. Which pretty much sinks it for me right there.

charlesesl 03-31-2004 03:12 PM

Just another money sucking MMORPG. Don't see what s so good about it

Mephex 03-31-2004 03:23 PM

From what I've heard, they are adding villians, and with them, PvP. However, I have no CLUE what you will do to pass the time ? I mean, will you kill ? If so, what ? Do you work a normal job, then have to run to a phone booth to switch outfits ?

I mean, wth ?

seretogis 03-31-2004 03:25 PM

I don't know much about it yet, but I got my pre-sale box today and will hopefully get into the beta program in a couple of days. It's a good concept, I just hope they implement it correctly.

Mephex 03-31-2004 03:28 PM

I've been hearing that from so many people. But what's good about it ? I mean, really. What're you looking forward to doing ? Creating your character ? Being unique ? What about it is getting you interested.

I just re-installed DAoC yesterday to pass the time until WoW. I'm not seeing anything fantastic about CoH. Not trying to be critical, just curious.

Slayer 03-31-2004 05:14 PM

The game doesn't look that interesting. I might try it if its free, its not worth the money to pay for that game every month.

rbox 03-31-2004 09:45 PM

Well spent like 3 hours playing tonight with some buds, and it was a most enjoyable experience. You are a hero 24/7, and paragon city has a billion bad guys, Mephex. All of them are just NPCs though, but if you are correct on them adding Villians and a bad guy faction, this game could become great, instead of just entertaining right now.

Basically you accept missions, go complete the missions, usually rescue some missing people from sometypeofbadguys. or find some stolen painting, or take care of gang problems in a park. The types of badguys we saw were your typical thugs, zombies, clockwork machines, and some Nazis. Seems pretty typical right now, the city seems quite large, we never left the zone we started off in/instanced dungeons connected to it.

The missions are usually in instanced dungeons, much like how LDoN works. Missions can be done solo, or you can group up with people, and the missions automatically increase in difficulty to account for your group, which I think is a pretty good idea.

Graphics are pretty nice, controls are nice and the gameplay isn't just hit auto attack and watch it do its thing. although it isn't that much more than that.

Character creation is simply amazing, every hero looks soooooo cool, and the chances of looking exactly the same as another hero are going to be pretty slim because of the number of options are just wow.

I suggest buying the presale box to get into the beta for 3 weeks for only 10 bucks, and if you like it you get 10 bucks off release.

Phaenx 04-01-2004 07:02 AM

City of Heroes, haha. I got banned from that forum years ago for trolling the comic book fanboi's.

I think the definition of the term "peen" in the context I used it is still a hotly debated issue.

Heel Turn 04-01-2004 08:55 AM

Wow, it's actually out in beta? I used to be around on the CoH forums a long time ago, but I gave up posting after they kept repeatedly pushing back the date of their beta. I probably won't bother to check it out now, though...going to wait for Worlds of Warcraft, which, judging from what I've seen so far, is going to be amazing.

I am hoping that CoH will (with the introduction of "villain" heroes) be some pvp-ing super-hero fun. WoW is currently looking to be a daoc+eq cookie-cutter mmorpg grind-fest.

ggadgit 04-02-2004 06:08 AM

I've got a friend who is betaing this and really likes it, I've been thinking about getting into it also.

raist 04-02-2004 09:06 PM

Ive been checking it out in beta, kinda of hard to explain besides just plainly describing it as different. Before beta wasnt to sure about playing a super hero, seemed a bit cheesy, after playing it in beta found myself preordering it. Nice thing is its somewhat solo player friendly. You can get your own solo indoor missions that dont take forever to complete and you can actualy get a decent amount of experience doing. Its nice when you dont feel like waiting around/begging for a group for anywhere up to an hour or so in other games.

guthmund 04-03-2004 09:56 PM

Can you be the bad guy?

Now that would be interesting....

Bad guys get missions to break stuff & Good guys get missions to try and stop them.....

Best super villian/superhero wins. That I could get behind. I'm not into the "raid random dungeon/ win fabulous prize" stuff. :)

When I was still following it, the developers were all "It's called city of HEROES!!!!111!!!"

Bunch of nerds man, the entire forum would flip out if I brought up the fact that super heroes don't exist or something.

I'm playing -- my name is "Seretogis", level 3 mutant defender.

This is my first-created char, and the one I play most often -- a level 5 mutant defender (dark/psionic) -- it's sort of like a ShadowKnight in that it has an endurance tap which acts as a group-heal.

JRG 04-08-2004 11:42 AM

Nice graphics but as others have said, what exactly is there to do? I personally dont think saving people/artifacts from bad guys is that fun. I like my mmorpg's to give me a sense of being in a whole new huge world, not some city full of thousands of other heros.

At this point it's really just missions. Most of them are just kill-these-things-recover-this, or kill-this-many-of-these type of missions. I'm hoping that at higher levels there is some more variety, but I think that they are going to be launching the game with little actual content. I think that this will be a great game to play in six months or so.

Mephex 04-08-2004 12:10 PM

Awww, that sucks. Bigtime.

Sounds like SWG all over again.

dragonhawk 04-08-2004 01:19 PM

I am in beta and have been since the second wave, and have bought the pre-sale, and this is the first MMORPG that I am going to pay for...

It is great. I personally don't understand those that want PVP so bad. There are plenty of villians to fight. No crafting to worry about. The story arcs are great, and you can even develop nemisis (sp?) over time...

The developers are great about listing to the beta testers, and have balanced the game pretty darn well.

There is plenty of content, from different villian groups (low level thugs up to archvillians) and different settings from "normal" cities to Hazard Zones where the baddies get tough.

If you like superheros, you should check it out.
If you wanna be a supervillian... Tough, take your money elseware, but your missing a great game.

Maveric 04-08-2004 03:46 PM

it's not as crowded as you might think. the game is mostly geared towards grouping and missions. i do like the interactivity they had added to some of the missions. one mission had a group of villians hunting YOU down.

another mission my hero got diseased at the end (he gained some negative debuffs, and a sickly looking flyy buzzing animation). I had to do another mission to rescue a doctor to get cured.

i had one mission where i was allowed to test out a pair of EMP guantlets (temporary electric blast power).

i like the way the missions are part of a storyline that your contacts (NPCs) guide you through...

seretogis 04-10-2004 07:37 AM

I'm level 10 now, and really enjoying myself. The vast majority of people in the beta are pretty cool (though some are comic-book-geeks who are mmorpg newbs) and I'm exploring some more with a small group of people that I play with. Look me up on Prime -- same name.

seretogis 04-10-2004 07:48 AM

I helped found a new "Supergroup" (guild) and part of the neatness of it is that you can choose two colors for your SG. You can then (as a member of the SG) use those two colors to make a Supergroup-color-scheme for your character. Here's mine, and I really like it -- more than my original colors, even.

It looks cool, but can you dress as a civilian. Having a double life is what being a superhero is all about. The game would be severly lacking if it didnt allow you to dress up as a civilian and only change when you encounter enemies.

Well, you can dress like a farmer or a businessman, but there's no outfit-changing really. Paragon City is a city of heroes, so being a hero isn't really a big surprise to anyone.

Gman 04-11-2004 12:45 PM

My question is, if you die, do you lose your character? Or is there a kind of "knocked out" system in place like in SWG?

Gman 04-11-2004 12:54 PM

Oh, and about how much will the monthly charges be?

BigGov 04-11-2004 01:53 PM

That looks like something I might play, but I doubt I could run it, what are your comp specs?

Spunk 04-11-2004 03:41 PM

Looks like a pretty cool game, actually.

seretogis 04-11-2004 05:08 PM

If you die you can either be resurrected, or respawn at a hospital.

The required specs don't seem to be that high. I can run it nearly flawlessly on my P4 1.5ghz + 1gb ddr-ram + GF 4400 w/ 128mb setup.

You can have one primary and one secondary power set. Later on you get to choose a third and fourth power set from a third "neutral" pool which includes things like flying, super-jumping, teleportation, and stealth.

BigGov 04-14-2004 05:57 PM

Hmm...A katana wielding martial arts master that sneaks around stealthily and teleports?

I really want my new PC now :(

You should read up on the general info articles linked above if you haven't already -- they provide a lot of info that isn't available to beta players, since there is no manual.

They get wiped on the 22nd of April. The servers open up that day I think, but only people who pre-ordered the game will have access. The rest wait until the 25th, when it's released.

So you get a head start as a pre-order.

seretogis 04-18-2004 04:20 PM

I believe the game is released on the 28th, which would mean chars are wiped on the 25th. Pre-ordering peoples get a three-day head start.

BigGov 04-18-2004 04:53 PM

I thought it was going to be released on the 28th too but according to GameFAQs it's going to be released on the 25th now. Don't know if it was moved up or if I just can't read.

All servers are wiped on the 22.

Somehow Pre-order accounts will get to reserve a name on the server/servers. This is still being worked out.

Pre-order people get a 3 day head start starting on the 25. Everyone else get's in (If they buy the game, and the game is actually on store shelves) on the 28.

Phaenx 04-19-2004 09:17 AM

They said they're wiping on the 22nd last I looked, which wasn't more then a couple days ago.

Anyhow, if you're going to pre-order, do it from gamestop. They're the only ones who had the foresight to send you the information via e-mail.

Phaenx 04-19-2004 09:25 AM

You guys want to start a super group for launch? I'm going to hit Justice server with some friends, so we could be set pretty good for leveling teams and such.

I have pre-order too, so if anyone wants to hook up on Justice and level that weekend before launch let me know.

Plan9Senior 04-19-2004 10:31 AM

I feel the game will have absolutley no holding power. Don't waste your money. The only plus that it has is that it is different then the current mmorpgs. The negatives are too numerous to start writing down but I will give you a few game killers: No Player vs. Player combat, No playable bad guys, stuck with same looking toon forever (no costume customization after char creation), no loot, and a very weak quest system. I will stop right there because those are the resons I won't be playing. For all those interested in it, here are some funny screenshots of some characters you can whip up...

This will be true at release, but Cryptic has confirmed that they will be working supervillians (playable heroes, turned bad) into the game -- perhaps in the first expansion. Note that every mmorpg that has started off completely focused on pvp has been an absolute failure. However, if Cryptic can work up a PvP system as polished and immersive as the PvE side of the game, it will be a success and a lot of fun.

This isn't quite true -- you can customize your costume with a supergroup color scheme, post char-creation. Cryptic is also including general costume customization in a later patch, at the expense of influence (gold).

Weak? How? The quests/missions in CoH are more dynamic and entertaining than any I've taken part in from EverQuest or DAOC. There is definitely some repitition if you do the same missions over and over, but that is why you don't. If you've done a few "rescue the scientist" missions, then do a sewer one instead to change the pace.

While City of Heroes ( www.cityofheroes.com ) is ready for an April 28 launch, Cryptic developers already are working on the first major expansion to the game that will allow players to take on the role of villain in Paragon's modern metropolis. Hey, what did you expect. They are releasing the aspect of being able to play a villan so they can leech more money from us. Personally I think it should have been included. Then they could have expanded on it. As in land wars, or something along those lines.

Btw go play AO ( Anarchy Online ) The game has changed a lot !!!

flagpole 04-29-2004 10:23 AM

Cryptic didnt include player villians from the start because they want to get it working properly before they introduce it.
Of course, they COULD have gone the AO route, released a buggy, barely playable piece of shit and then beg people to come back to it in a year with special offers and old account reactivations for low low prices, because they finally made it work like it should have done at launch.

Wow, guess i'm kind of bitter, huh?

I found the game to be tedious just like other mmorpgs. I spent more time creating my hero than leveling them up.

Moskie 05-01-2004 04:38 AM

I got myself a Controller on Freedom, named Effector. Anyone else on Freedom?

I like the game so far. I have to give it some more time, though, as I'm just now getting some interesting powers. This is my first real experience with an MMORPG, so I can't really compare it to much else.

Creating my character was the most fun part, so far. I'm having to force myself to concentrate on the one I've made, instead of trying to make new ones.

Ive got a scrapper on Justice.

The game is a little repetitive, and the environments aren't very interactive. It does get alot more fun when you group up, but it just seems to be missing something that would give its own identity. Maybe it just needs a better feel of continuity between missions, so it doesn't feel like your typical dungeon (or city in this case) crawl.

I'm playing on Guardian as The Black Viper. I'm enjoying this and decided on it over Lin2. Send me a tell if anyone is on that server. We have a Supergroup just starting and we can always sidekick a low level player if they are interested.

Interesting.

Well, I broke down and picked it up the other day. I gotta say that so far I am impressed with the overall design. The hero creator is excellent! I.'ve spent almost as much time making up heros as I have in game.:D I do like being able to make some sort of progress in an hour or so of play, but I'm still only level 7 and I'm sure the leveling will scale up soon. We'll see how it fares after the first month is up.

Same here, I play Maveric on the virtue server. I'm currently level 16 but that's only because I've re-rolled this character over thirty times...

Maveric
  • Origin - Natural
  • Archetype - Scrapper
  • Primary Powerset - Broadsword
  • Secondary Powerset - Regeneration
  • Power Pool - Flight
  • Power Pool - Fitness
  • Power Pool - Leadership

I'm level 34 now on Victory, things are slowing down quite a bit xp-wise and I've started playing a bit less until there is some reason to hit 40.

00111000 06-14-2004 01:57 PM

Im on the Liberty server, playing mostly as Malarchuck a lvl 14 fire/fire blaster. Had some good fun this weekend in perez park! Ran into the Kraken....didnt make it much further :)

cradeg 06-15-2004 09:40 AM

00111000 06-15-2004 10:09 AM

There was an option for that, right at the end of beta I think. No longer available though.

cradeg 06-15-2004 10:18 AM

cradeg 06-18-2004 09:28 AM

Bim 06-18-2004 11:28 AM

It's good to start out with a Tank or a Blaster first, Tanks can take a lot of punnishment, and blasters can hit hard, so you should be safe while still learning the game. You could try using a Scrapper first, but I have yet to make one so I dont know, they do hit hard tho, but can't take a beating like a tank. Then later move on to making a Defender, Controller. Out of all my charaters my controller was the hardest to level up solo, and hardest to play, but very rewarding none-the-less. I play on the Pinnical server. My characters are Bim (Tank), Mae Bule (Controller), or Gamut (Defender). i have a couple more but I hardly use em.

cradeg 06-18-2004 11:47 AM

thx .. i am really looking forward to this one , i am currently very busy at work so i dont have much time .. on weekends i normally raid in time with the guild (EQ) but i am honest i am looking for something new .. i gues s COH should be very rewarding

Czernobog 06-21-2004 10:18 PM

I think it's a well done, well thought out game....I just miss getting stuff more than once every other level...:)

Once you get into the later levels, it's hard to juggle more than one character....I used to have a whole bunch, but I deleted most of them because I hardly ever used them. And if you're ever on the Virtue server:

Aurea Sandria, level 26 scrapper.

Esen 06-22-2004 05:10 AM

Im on the CHAMPION server if anyone s looking for a server to play on ,
I have a lev 12 Controller and lev 5 Defender

Plan9Senior 06-22-2004 12:58 PM

I have a level 40 on Justice and several 20ish chars as well and a newbie I just started.

Maveric 06-29-2004 05:42 PM

BTW, Virtue is the "unofficial roleplaying" server as well as where most of the beta and pre-beta forum members went...

Plan9Senior 06-30-2004 01:31 PM

Justice is the most populated server and is where all the developers play.
