HELP!!! I can't decide!

Hey all, here is my problem. I just built a new system and I want to put it through the test with a new game. I have been looking at either Call of Duty, Halo, or Max Payne. I really like first person shooters and war games. I am looking for something new with good graphics and sound. I have been kinda swaying towards call of duty from reading reviews. But I couldn't think of a better place to get help. Let me know what you guys think or if there is a game I am missing that I should consider! Thanks in advance!

krazixs 11-14-2003 08:56 AM

Just to let you know, Halo (even if its a good game or not) will seriously push your hardware. It's a huge resource hog. So if you wanna see how much your CPU could handle you could probably do worse than Halo.

Rudel73 11-14-2003 09:19 AM

Actually kraz, i'm running 1.3 ghz 386 ram, and GeForce 4 Ti4400 and have no problems with the game at all. My brothers computer with lower specs has no problems with the game either, it just doesn't look as nice as it does on mine because i have the nicer vid card.

I'd reccomend Halo of course, its a sweet FPS game that very replayable and the multiplayer is quite fun!

If you want an all around War game check out World War 2 Online(its MMORPG so monthly fee) its basicly a half scale model of europe on a constant map and you fight out WW2...you can be infantry (fps) tanks planes Anti tank guns etc...very very fun doesn't get old fast like some other games might.

krazixs 11-14-2003 09:55 AM

See that's weird I'm running a higher system although I guess it is a penitum. . . oh well. Anyway with my system I experience serious framerate slowdown especially when I got about a million aliens on the screen. I have to take down my specs for it to run smooth, especially online.

Weird anyway maybe it's just me

2.5ghz
512mb ram
128mb GeForce 4

Stare At The Sun 11-14-2003 10:28 AM

If you're going to play halo, i think its more fun on the xbox in surround sound on a big tv, but thats just me..

Of those other two I'd go with max payne, just because hes such a badass. And I've played through BF1942 and MOHAA so im a bit tired of WW2... Plus bullet time is always fun, and the cut scenes in max payne rule...

Also, cool fast firing guns in Max Payne

Buk 11-14-2003 10:35 AM

Buy Call of Duty, its a better overall game

theburner 11-14-2003 10:41 AM

I have a buddy @ Bungie that said most of the Halo PC issues are with regards to the Graphics cards not exactly the system they are running on. Before someone get's all excited and says they have a 128 DDR Card, it isn't the spec of the card but the manufacturer. I can't elaborate because I can't remember the particulars.

dragon2fire 11-15-2003 09:10 PM

to play computer geek for a sec

if you update the drivers on your card it should fix most issuses

SSJwrestler 11-16-2003 12:59 AM

Halo takes the cake by far...no comparison

BulletCatcher 11-16-2003 03:20 AM

I'd pick Call of Duty. It won't test your system like the other 2 but is more fun in my opinion.

Now this is a game that will test your system. It doesn't look as pretty as COD, Halo or Max but there's more depth than than all of them combined. The massive scale will take your PC to the limit and then some.

You can even give it a try free of charge. CLICK HERE This is a 14 day free trial that gives you unlimited access to the full game. ***CAUTION*** Quake Kiddies and '1337 haxxor dudes' need not apply. This is not a game for a quick frag fix or for showboating you mad skillz. Patience is a virtue and teamwork a must if you want succeed here.

hahaha 11-16-2003 11:19 AM

Halo, it's awesome on the xbox, and on the comp its even better.

RogueHunter65 11-16-2003 11:38 AM

I had a problem with Halo running on my PC as well but if you go into the display options for the game and tweak them the game will run perfectly. So just adjust the setting and it will be fine. Halo is deffinately the way to go.

I downloaded it and am playing the free trial now, you move very slow and there isn't a lot of action and there are a lot of controls to master, i don't think im going to play it much more i'm too used to fast paced games like counter-strike to like it a lot.

Johnny Rotten 11-16-2003 01:42 PM

CoD and Max Payne 2 both have short but intense play times. Halo will keep you busy for a lot longer, but it's also padded artificially with lots of potentially disorienting back-tracking through previous areas. Halo multiplayer has a maximum of 16 players, but the maps are designed for a smaller number of players anyway. CoD has very intense multiplayer that will extend the life of the purchase more than Max Payne 2.

The short answer: It depends.

losthellhound 11-16-2003 08:17 PM

Homeworld 2 will push graphics and such, but I'd agree with Call of Duty for a new system test, and because the game also kicks ass.. When I build a new system I always play the same thing, to test it.. Galaga 88. ;)

Pedialyte 11-16-2003 09:10 PM

In my opinion Halo for pc is absolute junk... i wouldnt waste your money. Call of Duty is a blast and just a plain good game, nothing that will UBER tax your pc though. Max payne 2 rules as well. Probably doesnt help you much but I thought i would throw in my 3 cents about halo being a half baked piece of crap for PC. I would recommend one (or both) of the other 2.

cas305 11-17-2003 12:25 PM

Thanks for all your help guys, ended up getting CoD. When I read Halo had cut out the coop for the pc I boycotted it. Still was tough decision but wanted something with multiplayer so CoD won. Would of replied sooner put was playing it all weekend!!!!! :)

Help me pick a game for my new computer

Hello,

I'm getting a new laptop that is supposed to be top of the line from what I've heard. The computer I'm on now hasn't had a working CD drive for about 3 years and I'm way behind on the times. I really like RPGs, and I wonder what you'd suggest I get considering that I haven't seen anything for 3 years.

IckUber 11-17-2003 02:11 PM

Well it depends on what games you like. In my opinion you should check out these games:

Halflife (and the mods)
Starcraft
Warcraft III
Diablo II
Return to Castle wolfenstine
Black and White
Simcity 4
Final Fantasy XI (online, pay to play, MMORPG)
Solitare!!!!

BuddyHawks 11-17-2003 03:21 PM

Call of Duty
No one Lives Forever 2
Freedom Force
GTA Vice City
Dungeon Siege

Will you have internet connection?
Yes?
Well then get Battlefield 1942 and expansions.

BulletCatcher 11-17-2003 06:19 PM

If your looking for RPG's...

Balders Gate series
Neverwinter Nights
Fallout series
Morrowind
Icewind Dale series
Everquest

Some of them are old so you might have already played them but if not then it's a good place to start.

wilbjammin 11-17-2003 06:27 PM

I've played Fallout 1 and it was ok. I had trouble with Balder's Gate because the plot didn't do much for me. One game I really liked back in the day was Betrayal at Krondor. I do like story-based games, with strategy, and a touch of the unusual. I liked Torment, that was the last RPG I had that worked. I've been playing RPGs since they were text-based DOS games, so I really get bored when it is a repetition of the same plot-line stuff over and over and over and over again.

heccubusiv 11-17-2003 09:39 PM

Medal of Honor is good to test how good the pc is... if you like sport Madden 2004 looks really good an a Pc... Warcraft 3 with expasnion pact are good choices also. Also Doom 3 and Half-life 2 will put your machine to the test when they finally come out

Stare At The Sun 11-18-2003 09:17 AM

Half Life and mods
Starcraft
Warcraft III
Medal of honor and Battlefield 1942
Max Payne (action but lots of fun)
Neverwinter nights

supafly 11-18-2003 10:00 AM

I would go for Call of Duty, but thats personal.

mrquackers 11-18-2003 10:58 AM

Truth be told, you can't go wrong with any of those three games. I'd highly recommend all three. Start with whichever is cheapest.

Mael 11-18-2003 06:03 PM

star wars: knights of the old republic comes out on computer really soon, i think before the end of the month. just bought it for the x-box myself, should be sweet.

Crack 11-19-2003 02:13 PM

Dungeon Siege

~Crack

bundy 11-19-2003 04:45 PM

i reckon you should go for Morrowind, Halflife and SimCity4.
to start with - haha... its an addiction...

Wyodiver33 11-19-2003 04:57 PM

The Simpsons: Hit and Run!!! $25 for a 3-cdrom game at Best Buy!!! Great game.

wilbjammin 11-25-2003 09:04 PM

Ok, tomorrow is the day!

I'm thinking of getting The Temple of Elemental Evil (with Icewind Dale free) and Morrowind.

What do you think?

TheShadow 11-25-2003 09:56 PM

Fallout 2 is exponentially better than the first Fallout. If you liked the idea behind the game, but had a dislike for a minor aspect of how the game was made, Fallout 2 will be one of the greatest games you'll play.

Edit: I meant a dislike for something in the first Fallout. ;)

I'm also going to recommend Neverwinter Nights. Great game. oh, and I hear Morrowwind is good.

wilbjammin 11-25-2003 10:02 PM

I actually have Fallout 2, the last game I got before my CD-ROM crashed years ago. I enjoyed it... briefly!

Nefir 11-25-2003 10:06 PM

If you like X-COM or Jagged Alliance (anything other than a "hell yes" will result in immediate death by catapult, for it is blasphemous), SILENT STORM may be the game for you! :)

twister002 11-25-2003 11:20 PM

I'd get Civilization III and the latest expansion pack (Conquests).

You'll get your moneys worth out of it. "Just one more turn, then I'll go to bed I've almost got Gunpowder"

dragon2fire 11-27-2003 05:10 PM

new game

I am trying to decide on a new game to get this year for christmas

any suggestions?

Destrox 11-27-2003 08:10 PM

Lets just try and give as little information as possible okay? :P

What genre's do you like, what can your pc handle, etc...

Give us somthing to work off of.

Ganguro 11-28-2003 08:22 AM

it has to be playable.

NeverBorn 11-28-2003 09:51 AM

What system?

WhoaitsZ 11-28-2003 10:28 AM

get that game where the characters do that thing with the stuff. it's like... hmm.. you know, the one with colors!

Mr.Deflok 11-28-2003 01:13 PM

Personally I'd recommend the one at the shop.

Or maybe that one where you gotta press buttons and shit.. yeah.. that fucker keeps me entertained for hours

i recommend twister.

archer2371 11-28-2003 07:08 PM

Medal of Honor: Rising Sun is a pretty good one, it's short on easy, but gets harder as you go up the difficulty levels (yeah I know, that's a well duh statement) and that gives it its replay value and keeps you tryin to beat it for hours on end.

supafly 11-29-2003 08:35 AM

Need for speed underground is on my wishlist. You can check out the demo, it's great.

RotEx 11-29-2003 10:44 AM

GUNBOUND!!!!!!!!!!

oh wait.... thats free, hrmmmmm

how about the game that is on the shelf beside that other really cool game, i dunno, either one would be good.

dragon2fire 11-29-2003 11:42 PM

Thats the thing i play a little bit of everything but i own alot of games

my comp can handle any thing on the market

lets make this easy name a fairly new game in the following gernes that is good

rpg
real time staregy
puzzle games like myst
fps
sports games any type thats good and not a remake of something form a year ago

thanks

TheClarkster 11-30-2003 01:08 AM

DDR MAX 2. I have a feeling that I'll spend lots of hours on that game. Therefore, I recommend it for you.

None, they all suck... ok, well, Rise of Nations and Warcraft III are ok.

Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, not a direct sequel but set in the same storyline, very immersive, plus it has an MMPORPG segment too which I am entirely uninterested in.

Call of Duty, absolutely brilliant, love the fact that you can play as the Russians for once. You better have a decent sound-system for this one though, 'cause it'll fuck you up.

Leave those to the consoles, Need for Speed: Underground is pretty damn solid though, not really a sports game but yeah.

What to get the kids

I have a 7 year old and a 4 year old (both boys). We are going to get a gaming system for them this year. I just had no idea which might have the best selection of games for the younger kids. The games don't necessarily have to be educational. They like playing Spiderman on the computer. I see a bunch about the Playstation and the Nintendo, but I have no idea which has the best game availability. Any suggestions?

Beltruckus 12-01-2003 11:01 AM

Gamecube seems to generally have more games for youngins.

Prophecy 12-01-2003 11:37 AM

I'd agree the Cube has a great line up of games for the younger kids, it's also cheaper right than the other consoles. The Xbox is mostly aimed at older or more mature gamers. The PS2 has a wide selection of everything. However the PS2 is more damage prone than the cube.

The mario games are something you might want to look into for the cube.

Lasereth 12-01-2003 11:45 AM

Get a Gamecube. Cheaper, and has more kid-games. Also much more durable than any of the three systems.

-Lasereth

Distraction 12-01-2003 12:16 PM

Definately a Gamecube. Great price and a nice variety of kid friendly games. The controller should fit a kids hands better then either other console too.

And like it's been mentioned above, it's a lot more durable then a PS2.

skysooner 12-01-2003 12:38 PM

Thanks. My kids can be kind of rough on things. They haven't grasped the concept of putting CDs back in cases yet, so a bunch of their games get ruined by scratches, etc. I'm going to take them to Best Buy this weekend to find some games they might like.

t3m3st 12-01-2003 08:37 PM

also, theres a few more mature titles for you, if you're interested

Laladien 12-02-2003 12:36 AM

The Gamecube is a great choice. Not only does it have a number of games oriented for kids, but it has a lot of games that are oriented towards FUN. I mean, Mario Kart, Zelda, Super MOnkey Ball? All awesome!

dragon2fire 12-02-2003 01:44 AM

yea game cube is the best system for a family

lots of great kids games

cradeg 12-02-2003 09:28 AM

Gamecube :)

Mario Cart Racing (double dash or something) is a great game and something you can play with them too ... zelda maybe for your older one , great game

Dibbler 12-02-2003 11:51 AM

I hate to say it but yes, get them a Gamecube. Young kids will love it and it's cheaper...

Sorry Mr. Gates, I had to do it.

dragon2fire 12-04-2003 12:26 PM

thanks mr deflok

Ganguro 12-05-2003 12:33 PM

next time please try to be a wee bit more discriptive in your posts when you actually want some information.
If you come here asking "im looking for this thing".. you're opening yourself up to a whole world of mockery :)

Sorry if we hurt your feelings or anything..

PS 2 Game Questions

hey y'all. alright, heres the situation. i've put off getting a PS 2 long enough and I am going to get one for Christmas. I was hoping those of you who are veteran PS 2 players could give me the names of some good games. I love rpgs and fighting games, so that would be the preference. Thanks.

While I'm thinking about it, could list some of those games for SSJ and I? In my case, I am having a hard time deciding between an Xbox or PS2. The only thing that is keeping me from making my decision is the different titles that are out for each.

X-Box for the birthday boy...

So my wife actually bought me an X-Box for my birthday.

God bless her, I know how much my playing computer games annoys her. I also know I'm far too old to play them, but I like it!

Any recommendations for good games? I bought Crimson Skies with it and am enjoying it immensely.

usually I go for strategy type games on the PC but I know the X-Box is more geared towards arcade style.

Also, is X-Box Live! any good?

cheers guys,

Mr Mephisto

Prophecy 12-08-2003 07:53 PM

sweet, welcome to the club. Hope you enjoy your box.

As for the games, I'll start by saying the best FPS is of course Halo.
The best fighter is Dead Or Alive 3 or Soul Calibur 2.

RPGs:Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Morrwind: Game of the Year, & Shenmue II are the only real RPGs worth buying on the system.

The best sports games are:

Football: ESPN NFL Football (NCAA 2004 for college)
Basketball: ESPN NBA Basketball
Hockey: ESPN NHL Hockey
Tennis: Top Spin
Golf: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004
Snowboarding: SSX 3
Skateboarding: Tony Hawk 3
Racing: Midnight Club II, Moto GP 2, Pro Race Driver, Project Gotham Racing II, Need for Speed Underground & NASCAR Thunder 2004. Those are all great racing games.

(the ESPN games by Sega you can play online, the same is true for Top Spin, Midnight Club 2 & Project Gotham Racing II.)

Since you mentioned strategy games, the best game in this genre currently on the box is Gladius by LucasArts (It's a Strategy/RPG). It is turn based however.

On a different note a few of the best but different types of games on the system are Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Drgoon Orta and GUNVALKYRIE, the aren't for everyone but they are great games if you like the genre.

Finally, LIVE is fun, but it's not great. Your gaming experiance all depends on who you find to play with truthfully. Personally, I haven't experianced to much lag or too many kids online with social problems, but they are there. LIVE is what you make of it, I think it's good and it is only going to improve and grow. Currently LIVE is mostly geared towards sports and combat fans with a few racing games.

Also if you plan to sign up for LIVE make sure you check out all the LIVE payment plans at xbox.com

Lasereth 12-08-2003 08:22 PM

The best XBox games currently out (in my opinion) are:

Halo
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
Project Gotham Racing 2
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Game of the Year Edition
Grand Theft Auto: Double Pack
SSX3
Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War
Rainbow Six 3
MechAssault
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Soul Calibur II
Tony Hawk's Underground
Beyond Good & Evil
Deus Ex: Invisible War
GUNVALKYRIE (hard as HELL)
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
SSX Tricky
True Crime: Streets of L.A.
Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions
Colin McRae Rally 3
Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer
Max Payne
Midnight Club II
Need for Speed Underground
Project Gotham Racing
Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

Lasereth, I can't believe you didn't mention any mainstream sports games!

And I forgot to mention a game called Steel Battalion. Mostly likely if you don't have it you won't find it. It's $200 and it comes with a huge, and i mean huge custom controller made just for this stellar mech game. However, if you can get your hands on it, it is most likely the best mech game ever made.

zero2 12-08-2003 09:21 PM

Splinter Cell
Halo
Halo 2 (coming soon)
Soul Caliber 2
Max Payne 1 & 2
Star Wars KOTOR

Well, I did say that those were the best games in my opinion! Sorry, I'm just not a fan of sports or sports games at all. That's the same reason I didn't list any on my PS2 must-buy games list also. I won't say that sports games are bad, but I will say that I don't like them, therefore them not being on my list. :)

So I got Midtown Madness III with the box. It's OK, but not much run really. You can bash the shit out of your cars and it doesn't seem to affect them. Also there's no effect of running over pedestrians... hah.

So, I was wondering if there's any good driving games where you can play against another player, has realistic damage, maybe a bit of realism etc. I guess something along the lines of GTA, but that's a bit old now, isn't it?

Mr Mephisto

Mr.Deflok 12-09-2003 02:42 AM

GTA? You can get GTA3 and Vice City on the Box, same game just a few minor graphical enhancements, still no better than the PC counterparts but still very very good.

Mephisto2 12-09-2003 03:44 AM

Please excuse my rambling post above. I've had a bit too much wine this evening!

So, is there something like GTA available on the X-Box?

I remember playing a game on the PC years ago called Carmagedon (sp?). Kinda sick but fun, as you got points for running over pendestrians. It was banned in Australia, so you had to download the "blood patch"... strange conservative censors...

Dead or Alive 3 is a zombie game, right? It seems like it would be fun.

Thanks guys...

Mr Mephisto

Yes, there is a game on XBox that's like GTA besides the actual game. True Crime: Streets of L.A. is out on XBox. It's a lot like GTA, but I've heard that if you've played GTA then you might not enjoy it as much because it's simply not as good.

Dead or Alive 3 is a fighting game. Never played it, but I've heard good things about the series. They're no Soul Calibur, but they're decent!

Prophecy 12-09-2003 07:39 AM

Offical DOA 3 site. http://www.tecmogames.com/games/doa3.asp

Yep like Laserth said this game is a fighter, it's also on the Microsoft platinum hits collection, $20 bucks is a great price for this game.

The zombie games are the "House of the Dead" games.

theburner 12-09-2003 12:37 PM

My personal fav's are:
Ghost Recon Series (GR and GRIT)
Rainbow6 (Best shooter on platform IMHO)
Max Payne Series
Project Gotham Series
Crimson Skies
Amped 2
Tiger Woods 2004 (2003 is good, just can't customize as much)
Madden '04 (Fever '04 was a let down to me)
Knights of the Old Republic
Splinter Cell

I usually trade in old games, but none of the above games are being traded in.

Lasereth pretty much covered them all. Be like me a real mech head and find Steel Battalion..that game alone is worth the price of admission

hulk 12-10-2003 03:26 AM

What should I get (GameCube)

Ok, I've been thinking this one out for a while, but can't make up my mind. I'm looking for a rally game to use my new wheel on, and I can't make up my mind between Dakar 2 and V Rally 3. The video shop near here doesn't have either of them to rent, so I can't really try them. Any of you guys have any suggestions? Observations?

Playstation 2 or XBox?

-Lasereth

hulk 12-11-2003 08:13 AM

GameCube, like the subject says =D

Lasereth 12-11-2003 08:24 AM

Ha ha, sorry, I never look at the subjects (they don't stand out). IGN gave Dakar 2 bad reviews, and they don't have a review of V Rally 3 at all. I checked Electronic Gaming Monthly, and they don't have a review up for either of them. All I can say is rent'em first I suppose (if you can find them!). IGN does have a review on the PS2 version of Colin McRae's Rally 3 (got good reviews!). I know it's out for Gamecube, so you might want to try it on GC. Sorry that I couldn't find more!

-Lasereth

hulk 12-12-2003 08:12 AM

No worries, I'm not really into CM3, CUBE didn't give it a crash-hot review. I think I'll go with V Rally, the general consensus on Dakar is that it's arcade, and I want a more realistic kinda ride.

guthmund 12-20-2003 10:07 PM

Oh come all ye PS2 fanboys....

I apologize for the title, but Christmas is around the corner and I have been overcome with good cheer.

No, really.

Anyway, I know that there are a lot of PS2 fans here on the forum. So, this is the place to ask.

I am going to be getting a PS2 for Christmas (I know, I know, I've waited forever) and was wandering if anybody had any game testimonials and/or recomendations.

I'm looking for some killer PS2 exclusive games. I own an X-Box and Gamecube that I play, some would say, religiously so there is a good chance that I've already played the really good cross-platformers.

It doesn't matter the genre, as I like to play them all. So, run wild, run rampant and tell me of the greatness that is Sony.

ebeye 12-20-2003 11:35 PM

Final Fantasy X is the reason I bought my PS2, and I was not disappointed.

Stare At The Sun 12-20-2003 11:43 PM

Look for gran turismo 4 soon, FFX, X2 are supposed to be damn good, but im not a big fan of that kind of RPG. Metal gear solid 2, really depends on what type of games your into..

Ofcourse GTA3/Vice

MontanaXVI 12-21-2003 12:21 AM

gotta give it up for the soon to be here (well mybe not soon the great ones always get pucshed back) gran turismo 4. that game is gonna own

guthmund 12-21-2003 09:34 AM

Final Fantasy X. You really can't go wrong with Final Fantasy.

Gran Turismo 4. I was a big fan of the series on the PS1.

Metal Gear Solid 2. One of my favorite games on the PS1. I also look forward to the Gamecube version I keep hearing about.

I really like GTA: Vice city. It is so pretty on the X-Box.

A couple of really good choices. Thanks, fellows. :)

Anybody else have any suggestions?

Lasereth 12-21-2003 10:18 AM

The Geek 12-21-2003 12:13 PM

Y'know, I was going to post a game or two here, but I think Lasereth gave you plenty or reasons to get a PS2.

bltzkriegmcanon 12-25-2003 11:44 AM

LOTR: TTT and ROTK are pretty good action-based games as well, although Las pretty much covered all the bases for really good games for PS2
