Starcraft Broodwars

Does anyone (in the US) still play this game? I know that in Korea they actually broadcast starcraft games on television, and a few of the best players have fan clubs with millions of people. Even after 4 years or so, I am still totally addicted. I was just wondering if anyone else is as well. Also, it's getting pretty old, so if someone knows of any other *newer* addictive games out there to take it's place, let me know.

I do indeed, I think it is still the best strategy multiplayer out there that anyone can play.

As far as more complicated games, I am a huge fan of Civ2 and Civ3.

People still play it. I think most of that crowd moved on to newer games. Those faithful to Blizzard probably went to wc3x. I know that's where I am. SCx is the premier balanced RTS though. But now I only go back to it to play private games with friends.

Haven't played it for awhile, but still think it's the best RTS out so far. I know Warcraft 3 looks prettier but I personally enjoy the Starcraft:Brood War gameplay a lot better.
I would hate to have someone commentating my game or millions of people watching me, cause I am not a very good player and make many mistakes.

Starcraft II is to be released in coming years, supposedly and if you ask me Brood War was one of the weakest expansions EVER!

DII Ex Pack added a whole new act, 2 new classes, and class specific items. Along wth a host of new sets.

WCII Through the Dark Portal Added new heroes and some units I think. Along with two new campaigns

WCIII TFT has a dozen new heroes a couple new units for every race new maps, creeps, and campaigns. And race specific stores!

Broodwar was a weak expansion, but it still did expand the storyline and add a few units without unbalancing a perfectly well balanced game (too much).

Warcraft 3 was a huge let-down, 3-d graphics are not up to the bitmapping specs that were set by the 2-D predecessors. Id take starcraft over Warcraft 3 any day. As far as Starcraft 2, hope it comes out better, would be a shame to bastardize the name of the original.

True, Brood War may not have added new races or two new campaigns but Brood War did fix the play balance of Starcraft. I.E. unit costs, damage rates, hit points, and build times (The terran Goliath is finally useful). Rushing in Brood War is practically gone compared to what it was in Starcraft.

Blizzard did add six new units and added on to an already superb campaign from the first game.

P.S. Kerrigan is amazing

That was the beauty of brood wars, Starcraft was so close to perfect they didn't need to add much, unlike WC3 which is a superb game and the expansion made it even better, but still no where close to the master, grasshopper

I disagree, i think Starcraft was a mindless game that required little to no Strategetic sense.

The tactics in Starcraft = Rush the other guy, or get more units than the other guy. Thats it! Maybe some small micromanagement but other than that, there is no real "Strategy" involved.

Now if you wan't real strategy check out the games in the Myth Series (excluding Myth 3, it wasn't done by Bungie). Now those games required tons of tactics and skill. You actually had to set up you're units in formations, get the high ground, and be really good with the magical units.

I don't know, if you're more of the gamer that doesn't like to think, just kill then Starcraft is probably better. If you like tons of strategy and a completely realistic RTS check out the Myth Series, even if they are pretty old these days

I disagree, even though it was more complicated, its still a matter of overpowering. High terrain meant next to nothing and the formations really didnt make a difference.. They "beefed up the AI for Myth 2" by making it so enemies killed you faster by doing more damage..

The best game for actual strategy in this genre was moon project.. but even that had flaws..

Starcraft has the replayability because it is simple, pretty, has a very smooth UI and is generally a great game..

High terrain meant next to nothing? 5 Archers could slaughter entire armies if they had the hill...and if your melee wasnt properly grouped before entering combat you will lose! aahhhh its just more complicated than starcraft i guess...

Some of you may already know this, but Starcraft is the number 1 selling PC game ever. The game wouldn't reach that status if it was crap. I still play to this day, although I've devoted more attention to Warcraft III lately just because WC3 has more custom games which I think is one of the best aspects of online gaming

i would love to participate in this thread, but whenever I install both Starcraft and Broodwars, I find myself needing to reformat within a week. I am cursed. Also, therefore, I suck at RTS's, due to my inability to practice.

Yeah. One of my best friends shattered all his backups and made me hold his originals so he would stop playing.

I highly, highly, HIGHLY disagree.

Please be kind enough to name one (1) 3d RTS that has been as remotely succesfull in sales, growth, active play, and post expansion support as WC3.

Please also state a single company with no experience in the MMORPG industry with any following remotely as succesful in pre-development following as blizzard?

Additionally, please also choose a snigle game in Diabloesque status that has not drawn on the Diablo engine for development that made even *half* the money in either Diablo 2 or Diablo (1) sales.

what i for one look at is content and wc3 as little new or intersting

the only thing you prove to me is that blizz is riding its on coat tails witch i agree with

i love d2 and starcarft but i dont like the up coming starcarft ghost and i am waiting for blizz to have a nother origanal thought

starcraft is a great game, there's no denying that. On a multiplayer level it is especially more involving that WC3. But this discussion is moot, since the two games effectively require different sets of skills.

Starcraft is still a game primarily of attrition and speed. While being the more fun of the two, SC is also a more mindless MP game than WC3, but strangely enough it has more replayability than any game in its genre. This is why it is so successful.

In single player mode, SC also has a far tighter and more involving storyline than most games ever developed. Better than a lot of books and movies in fact, which is a rarerity in gaming terms.

SC2's pre-release success will to a large extent depend on what blizzard achieves with SC: Ghost, even though it is FP based.

Anyway, while I love both SC & WC, I think Diablo belongs in the gutter. mindnumbingly bad series.

I love starcraft. I play it to this day. In fact, there are a quite a few strategies employed in SC, mainly the art of stealth. Also, I thought D1 was much better than D2, the items were exciting, and you could tell the difference when you equipped them.

I finally finsihed this game.

I was using cheat codes. I purchased it more than 2 years ago and was tired of lookign at it sit idly in my cd collection, so I decided to plug it in and play. I played a bit of the protoss missions before I realized that I had to get throguh it before the end of the night.

Great game. I feel tI'd have been able to defeat if if given enough time, but by golly it was difficult. Thank the cheat codes.

I have yet to enjoy the korean fan base of the worldwide servers now. I plan to on, my next day off beat at least one fully fledged korean who speaks not a word of english
