Rolling his eyes at the tender moment, Dreggan drank his last potion to heal his wound and started to make his way up the mountain. When he was sure noone was looking at him, he frowned in deep thought. Would his friends have to deal with his past as well? Could he keep his own creeping past under control? Only time would tell...

Nina welcomed Vanelee's embrace, but she felt something cold and tense in the air. Turning from him, she scanned the faces of her companions.
Dreggan. His mind whispered to her, full of questions, doubts, and fear. He was hiding something from them, something that could affect them all. Afraid that Dreggan might sense her intrusion into his thoughts, Nina pulled back reluctantly and followed him with hesitance up the mountain.

Matt rushed about the battlefield, in all the speed he had left in a desparate effort to catch up with is friends. His ribs hurt like hell. He was collecting the bodies of the orcs and creating a huge mound where they had downed their leader. When they were all collected, he took all the cloth they had from tents and cloaks and covered them. Luckily, he was able to find a flask of orcish beverage on one of them. He poured the liquor sparingly over the cloth. He then knelt at one corner, said a brief prayer, and focused a small chi blast that ignited the pile. He knew this may not be extremely strategic, but it was the right thing to do and so he would do it. He then reluctantly struggled to catch up, knowing that Dreggan would be mad.

Dreggan paused for a moment. He felt a nagging tug at his mind, as if someone was watching him. He turned to find Nina gazing lovingly at Vanelee and Matt catching up in the distance. The scent, as well as the sight, of a pile of orcs burning soon reached him as he looked beyond the monk.
He stopped walking, shaking his head. He saw that Matt already sense his disapproval, since his usual beaming smile was somewhat subdued. Glaring at him, the thief turned around and resumed his ascent. If anyone had trouble tracking the group, the monk's enthusiastic, if incredibly foolish act would undoubtedly serve as a handy beacon saying: "Look, a battle was fought here, we obligingly left you this gigantic pile of burning corpses in case you were wondering if we had passed this way. Please, do catch up." Dreggan audibly groaned at the thought, then felt the weight of his purse which had bulged slightly after his fleecing of the brutes. It wouldn't be a complete waste, after all...

Vanelee couldn't help but join in with Dreggan's groans, for he too also thought Matt's actions were a great disadvantage. No matter how good-intentioned his actions were, Matt may have sacrificed the groups only opportunity to ascend the mountain without falling under the Dukes watchful eye again.
'O well!' the elf thought as he ran to catch up with the other, who were travelling with an unusal spring int heir step. 'Now the Duke KNOWS we're comng, and can prepare himself. Might make things a little more interesting.' Then an almost malevolent smile shone over the elfs face, but was quickly dismised as he reached the others. Rejoining the group, the elf smiled politely and couldn't help brush his own body against the mages as they worked their way up the steep slope. |

(OOC: Of course, but I'm waiting for new developments. I believe I've made sufficient contributions to the story so far, so I'm leaving the floor open to others as to what happens next. BTW, SSJwrestler, if your tagline is supposed to mean "farewell" in French, then it should be written "Adieu", meaning "to God".)

Dreggan reaches the top of the hill first and waits for the others to catch up. From his vantage point, he sees that a network of valleys and gorges wind their way through the mountains and towards the badlands. Crossing them would be a difficult task, as they offer no hiding place in case they run into trouble, but it was the quickest way to their goal. Smoke rose at different points, indicating battle and destruction between the orcish army and whatever forces the king was able to raise to throw at his enemy.
Scratching his chin, the thief ponders what move would be best. They had about 6 hours of light left ahead of them, which they could use to make good time before stopping for the night. At the bottom of the hill, two trails revealed themselves: on skirted a few hills before descending into a gorge, while the other gently slopped down into a reasonably wide valley. Turning to his companions, Dreggan shared his opinion: "Well, it seems we're almost there, folks. We can either go through the valley or stay on high ground for a bit. The first option might take us straigth into trouble, as advancing group would prefer lots of room to maneuver, while skirting the hills would allow airbone enemies to spot us more easily. I would prefer the hills, since any opposition we would run into wouldn't be too numerous. What do you guys think?" With that, Dreggan takes out an apple and starts munching on it.

" I say we take the high road as well." Vanelee said stepping forward, away from the rest of the group. " I think you make a good argument Dreggan."
"Let's get going right away! I mean the Duke knows we're coming, so let's not make him wait." Looking back at the others for support, Vanelee waits. But, turning back to Dreggan, he politely asks.." You wouldn't happen to have another apple would you?" |

"Enough discussion, it sounds like we're all in agreement, anyway," Nina said firmly, nudging past Vanelee.
A few paces along the path, Nina turned back and tossed her old cloak at Matt, who caught it somewhat clumsily. Then, stroking Anca's ears distractedly, she continued down the trail without looking to see if the others followed.

Slightly grumbling, Dreggan tosses an apple at Vanelee. It seems everyone was moving again. While he was pleasantly surprised that they all followed his plan of action, he hoped that they wouldn't run into more gargoyles of whatever monstrosity might claim dominion over these hills. Keeping his concern from the others, Dreggan closed up the rear, checking for any tails.
A brisk wind was picking up as they walked the winding road along the hills and cliffs, the first leg of the hike had been uneventful, but as they turned the last corner before the passage descended into the gorge, some commotion was heard ahead. Immediately, Dreggan jumped over the group to land in front of Nina, who was on point. Holding up his right hand to stop their progress, he listened attentively... "Hold up, people. It sounds like we've got company ahead. I'm not really sure, but it sounds like people speaking in the Eastern tongue. Weird... Oh and Matt, please don't rush in this time. Let's take it one step at a time, shall we?" With that, the thief crept further along the trail to the entrance of the gorge. The smell of cooking flesh came to him gradually, as well as drunken merriment and curses. Making his way to a boulder blocking at least a third of the passage, Dreggan stopped and motioned the others to follow... slowly and quietly.

Somewhat irritated by Dreggan's sudden encroachment on her position of leadership, Nina moved stealthily to Dreggan's side and listened.
Nina recognized the language immediately. She had become extremely proficient in a number of languages in the many years she had spent wandering across the earth. But the words that she could make out were just the rantings of a group of drunkards and told her nothing about them. She turned to her companions to see if any of them understood the language or if she would have to serve as interpretor.

Despite his lack of familiarity with the foreign language, Dreggan peered over the rock to see a group of humans in Eastern garb having themselves a good time. A skewered pig was slowly roasting over the fire and bottles of moonshine lay empty here and there, with many others in the process of being emptied.
Dreggan counted 8 men. All seemed to be mercs or thieves, but their skill level was impossible to judge, as the thief had tangled more than once with a seemingly drunken guard who proved tougher than he had thought. Their weapons consisted of scimitars and daggers, with one having a collection of throwing knives hanging from a belt across his chest. A few spears also rested on outcroppings near the group, as well as the rest of their gear. Turning to Nina, Dreggan hoped she could understand them. "It seems the king's hiring policies are pretty lax, if these are indeed the king's agents. For all we know, they could just be cutthroats out for easy pickings during the war. Do you think these guys are worth talking to, or should we just skirt them? Personally, I like making new friends... And if they turn hostile, we could easily take'em."

Breaking the vow of silence that he had seemed to temporarily taken on, Vanelee replied first. "Let's say we wait till they sober up? No use in tlaking to a bunch of people like this unless they have their wits about them."
"They can't see us from here, so our cover isn't blown. I suggest we find a place to set up camp not to far from here, take turns in keeping an eye on our new friends, and wait till morning." "What do you guys wanna do?" the elf asked, his warm rey eyes shinigng in the moon. |

Nina looked at Vanelee adoringly for a moment, then nodded.
"I suggest we do as Vanelee says. These men seem harmless enough, atleast they aren't orcs. I can talk with them in the morning, if that suits everyone."

"That's fine with me. Also, since we still have some daylight left, after we set up camp some of us can stand watch over the party here, while others can scout ahead for food and possible hostiles."

Matt payed little attention to the words of his companions. He couldn't help but think of how much fun it would be to join in their merriment. He was disappointed to hear that they seemed to want to wait. "C'mon guys. They look harmless enough. Besides, it would be fun to join in their party. Also, I doubt these drunks will be able to finish off that entire pig. I wanna go say hi."

"Matt, I really think we ought to wait this time, let's set up camp and do some patrolling/scavenging until tomorrow."
With that, Dreggan went about looking for a proper place to camp, which would still give the group a good view on this new group of fighters.

"Phooey."
Matt decided he would ease his boredom with a little training. Dreggan looked busy, so Matt turned to Nina. "Hey Nina, is it possible for you to teach me any basic magic? I mean, is it possible or is it an elf thing? I would really like to try to learn something." |

Nina eyed Matt with one eyebrow arched. She was unsure of whether or not she could in fact teach Matt anything, but, unwilling to admit weakness, she nodded.
"Let's go somewhere where your concentration will not be broken," she said firmly. In truth, she didn't want to risk failure in front of her companions. Not waiting for a reply, Nina disappeared into the woods to the side of the path.

"Yay!" Matt said, delighted at the prospect of being able to use even the simplest magic spell. "I'm gonna learn some magic! I'm gonna learn some magic!" he sang as he frolicked along behind Nina. When they finally appeared to pick a spot, Matt couldn't stop ranting on. "Oooh or maybe a fireball. Invisibility! Magic shield! Unlocking spell? Speed enhancement!!!" Somewhere in Matt's mind he knew it wasn't logical to think he could learn such a cool spell on his first attempt at learning magic, but his excitement was making him even slightly more dense than normal.

Dreggan looked on Matt's spectacle with a mixture of incomprehension and pity. However, that didn't stop him from finding a good camping spot near the edge of the path the group had just come down of, which still gave them a proper view of the festivities below. The merriment was still in full swing and might last well into the night.
"OK, guys. Enjoy your "training" and all that. I'm going to look for supplies." With that, the thief went about climbing the hill towards a lightly wooded area, which might offer some game to eat.
