Anyone remember Auto Duel?

Does anyone remember playing the game Auto Duel? I think it was made by Orgin and by the same guy who started the Ultima series.

It took place in a futuristic northeast United States. You would have to initally earn money by entering an area enclosed auto duel. You would drive aroudn and fight several other cars. When you were ranked a rookie, they would provide you with like a VW bug with a machine gun. As time went on, you'd buy your own cars to duel with, armed with flamethrowers, rockets and smoke screens. You could also earn money by running errands with your car, out in the real world, battling other cars along the way. It was cool because you could get out of your car and salvage stuff from cars you took out. You had to be careful you didn't get run over once you left the protection of your car, though.

I used to play it on the old family Apple II+. I believe it may have been out on the C64, too.

I always wished they made a modern verison of this game. Interstate 76 didn't count in my book, as I was looking for a top down view, like in the original.

What I liked is that when your charater was first built he had low skills. A low driving skill meant that no how many times you've played before, you would spin out of control more often...kinda like a mandatory handicap. I could usually get around this by not making any sudden driving moves.

Anyways, it was cool.

Didn't it have a cool flamethrower? I think I had it on the C64.

And I wasted many many Saturdays on Car Wars. I loved that game.

Nice about the flame thrower is it protected you by cooking one car while giving you a smoke screen against the other cars.

Played this game too. If you had enough money you could buy a clone and record a brain-tape so that if you got killed, you'd (well, your clone) would pop up in a town ready to go.

My favorite tactic was to mount a rear firing weapon and just wait til the cars chasing me were directly behind. Cheap, I agree, but effective.

There's a game coming out called Roadkill for the PS2 and Xbox (and I think maybe Gamecube too but not sure). It seems to have a lot of these elements in it as well. You can build up your cars, collect new cars and more. Sort of a Twisted Metal ^8th.

I loved it.... a shame that no one has updated it...

I thought that 70's auto game was going to fill it but didn't quite do it...

Auto Duel was put out by Electronic Arts. Its one of the games I had for Apple IIe that I think should be redone. (The other is Archon)

I've been writing the schematics for this game for the past 6 months. I based it off the original, only instead of 2d it has the gameplay of a cross between Twisted Metal and GTA III. I've put allot of work into it and am going to propose it to Electronic Arts next month. I dont know what the intellectual property situation is going to be becasue they very well may be able to look at it and say thanks. . .later and give me no credit. After all it is their game. I do feel Ive improved it 1000x though. Wish me luck. Its my vision to take it online into a virtual world (or at least post apocolyptic US)

There's a version of Archon for Palm handhelds. Don't remember the name, I'll come back and post if I do.

Yeah I played it. Its not even close to what the original was. If a remake was done by todays standards it would be great. Theres no doubt that it would be done in three dimensional game play which would rock.
