In res evil 2 when they zombies first jumped out of the window, but that was more of a sudden shock thing than actually being 'scary'
|
nothing freaked me out quite as much as silent hill 2.. there was just something about the atmosphere of that game and the grisly images on the screen...
...it also didn't help that i was playing it alone in the middle of the night with all the lights off... damn, i scare myself silly sometimes. |
Quake 1 freaked me out when you first encounter one of those big white guys that shoot the lightning.
Also Natural Selection freaks me out all the time. I'm constantly being suprised in that game:) |
Doom
Resident Evil Silent Hill 1 I finished the game in mute and playing before 7 PM. :) I want to play the third one. Silent Hill scared me more than Resident Evil, because it was more a psychological manner, the mood of the game makes it scary, like the movies The Exorcist and The Ring. Resident Evil makes you jump, because they hav ethe surprise element on it. |

Silent Hill is great, that first moment when you have to follow your "daughter" into that alley and then get jumped by monsters not knowing wut to do. And then theres the school with little children wimpering:crazy: |
some of the resident evil games were definitely very creepy. Fun stuff. Cheesy like an 80's horror flick but you're in control. weee!
|
System Shock 2. I had to play it in the daytime with people home otherwise I couldn't play. The sounds of the zombies moaning and the voices you hear mumbling in the background give you goosebumps. The first time a ghost appeared I jumped. This is definitely a scary classic. There is a new mod to this game that enhaces the graphics making it that much more visually appealing.
|
System Shock 2 is definitely another classic. And having played Doom 3 a little today (I love having special access), I can guaran-damn-tee the game will make you piss yourself - assuming you have the hardware to support it.
|
ive never really been afraid of games to have actually jumped if anything the resident evil series has made flinch once or twice

GAH that was some spooky shit. |
come to think of it, the video game the scared me the most was Duck Tales on the NES. That Transylvania level gave me nightmares. My mom had to cover the TV with a blanket at night or else I couldn't fall asleep. Ha... beat that modern survival horror game
|
Oh man, when I played Quake for the first time it scared me like nothing before. All the erie sounds coming from hallways... I'm surprised I finished that one.
|
The original Alone In The Dark.
All other sequels have sucked. Even Resident Evil & Silent Hill kind of followed its footsteps. Remember my first experience with Alone In The Dark. Had no idea it was a horror game, thought it was another lame adventure game after 5 minutes of play. Was going to stop and play something else when a "thing" jumped through the window pane and scared the crap out of me. Then it just got better and I got hooked. |
I've played a few of the resident evil games.. but nothing really got m like the first one.(was the youngest then) with the dogs jumping through the window.. that Really made me jump=P
|
Those damn dogs... urgh.
The AvP games were cool for a bit, before I got frustrated. It's too damn hard playing as the Marine to live for very long. At first, it's tense as all get out, but then it just gets too stupidly hard. Oh, and with RE:make, moving the dogs to a different scene was FUCKED UP. I was all, oh, gotta watch out, I know this part, and ... nothing. Then, moving back through the "empty" hall... grrr. |
I haven't played many scary games, although Silent Hill scared the **** out of me, i haven't played 2 or 3 though.
|
Single player Half-life scared the shit out of me a couple of times.
|
The first game that I remember that scared me was the original Clock Tower for PSX... Crappy game, crappy gfx, crappier interface and controls BUT man that was the SCARIEST game. That son of a bitch would pop out with his scissors from anywhere... even if you just ran away from him on the complete opposite side of the house... you get there and BAM there is the crippled foot dragging crazy dude already waiting for you... yikes. I think i'll sleep with my night light on tonight.

puh
some parts of Unreal
and Silent Hill 2 ... hell was that thrilling |
Resident Evil 2.
Try playing alone, in a basement, at night. Now that's DAMN SCARY!!!. |
I remember the original Doom as if it were last week, and I played it when it was first released. Scared the FUCK out of me in that room with the lights flashing on and off. Lights on, lights off, lights onFUCKINGMONSTERINYOURFACE!!!
More recently, I stopped playing Undying because it was too scary. I'm a wuss. ;) Can't wait to see Freddy vs. Jason though. |
The Silent hill series are quite dark and scary
|
one little abreviation
AVP |
Half life sadly.

Scary Videogames
What games have truly scared the crap out of you, and what parts?
Resident Evil 2: When the licker crashes through the window Silent Hill: When the body falls out of the locker |
Resident Evil 1: When the demon dogs crash through the windows in the hallway near the beginning. My friend actually threw the controller at the TV and refused to play any more.
|
Seems to have been moved to the right place, just in time for me to add:
System Shock II and Clive Barker's Undying! DAMN! Those were scary! |
I just remember playing 7th Guest with headphones and being a bit freaked.
|
Resident Evil. Of course I played this game in the dark. So...
|
Halflife. Scared the sh1t outta me when you see the first headcrab
|
The RE2 licker moment scared the holy hell out of me.
But lately Silent Hill is better. It doesn't have the jumpy scares of RE, but it does have a sustaining terror. I hear Fatal Frame is scary as all hell though. |

I was right!!! But I'll add this anyway: Silent Hill 3. |
all Silent Hill games scared the shit out of me and Project Zero.
|
RE for the scares, Silent Hill for getting into your head
|
Eternal Darkness has some freaky parts, but nothing has come close to 7th Guest.
|
The only scary game I played was Silent Hill while alone, in the dark, eating croissants and kudos bars.

The School is one twisted place, but the ambience of the non-existant floors of the Hospital is just mind-bending, random noises, psycho-style music, ghosts, and zombies with kitchen knives! |
Silent Hill.
When it came out, my friends and I sat for hours playing it. When the body fell out of the locker, three grown men all screamed like little girls. I think most of us had nightmares afterward with the air raid sirens droning in the background. To this day, when listening to the radio at night and a burst of static comes up, I look around out of sheer habit. Loved that game. |

We all screamed like hell, then after a moment realized how funny it was and started laughing our asses off. |
Hmm... I haven't been really scared of any game since I played Zombies ate my Neighbours when I was a kid. The game itself wasn't at all scary, but the way the humans screamed if they where killed by zombies freaked me out, so I had to quit playing it.
The missions in Thief where there were a lot of zombies was also a bit scary, but in a positive way. I remember I used to play it with a friend, were we would sit for hours in almost complete silence, only wispering to each other because we were afraid the guards whould here us if we made to much noise ;) Resident Evil 2 was never scary, it only had a very good atmosphere which I enjoyed a lot. I never played it during the day, I had to sit in a dark room to get the right feeling ;) |
