Video Games

What are some of the games that have freaked you out the most? (provided you play games)
playing Eternal Darkness for gamecube (great game, btw) has made me jump countless times due to the scenery and the effects that sanity has on you

and of course, the resident evil games had me and my friend both going upstairs in the middle of the night accompanying eachother to the bathroom...

Sleepyjack 08-11-2003 12:28 AM

Eternal Darkness is one of the most innovative games i've played in recent times. Namely due to the insanity metre, how ingenious. Creepiest moment was when i "examined" the bath on the upper level of the manision with Alex. Also when i "discovered" the guy hanging in the piano room, the rope scratching noise was so creepy, let alone suddenly discovering some guy hanging there!

silent hill series is also good.

And an older game, System Shock 2, is really creepy and scary. A great game.

blizzak 08-11-2003 12:31 AM

I never saw the guy on the rope, but I read about it....maybe it's better I didn't see it....heh
but yeah, same with that bathtub scene...me and my friend were playing at 6 AM and we both jumped

i'll check out some of those other games too

anti fishstick 08-11-2003 01:55 AM

resident evil definately. it always makes me jumpy

MacGnG 08-11-2003 01:57 AM

The Resident evil games.
Silent Hill.
Doom.
Phantasmagoria 2.

isandro 08-11-2003 05:09 AM

Quake two, there were a couple of really dark areas crowded by zombies and when you shot them the gun would flash like a stroboscope.

And WipeOut Fusion put the hairs on the back of my neck up a couple of times, because of the speed and the missiles blasting past. Fat rush, not really scary though.

rev_skarekroe 08-11-2003 07:13 AM

The "Marathon" games.
sk

Beltruckus 08-11-2003 07:18 AM

Silent hill 1 scared the bejesus out of me, never played the sequal. Aliens Vs. Predator when you are the marines and you see the blips fo teh aliens dear god that give you a rush because they could come from above below or same lvl.

Le3z0r 08-11-2003 07:39 AM

Silent Hill and I think it's called Fatal Frame

cliv 08-11-2003 08:56 AM

Doom with the mod to make it into the movie "Alien". With the sound turned up in a dark room, it's creepy.

WhoaitsZ 08-11-2003 09:00 AM

.... wrong board, fellas

tihe only game to ever totally freak me out was 'D' on the psx in 96 or 97, forget which. i was like 17..

eternal darkness made me jump once, which is saying a lot.

that's about it.

-shows people the bath tub sceene!-

I almost jumped out of bed for that sceene!:D

wario 08-11-2003 09:11 AM

Back when I was playing one of the first "horror survival" games to come out, Alone in the Dark. There's one part where you're just searching a bedroom, the door is open, and a zombie just casually strolls by. "Huh? Did I just see that? I'm not going outside." Sure it was a crappy super low-poly zombie, but having just slip by casually in the back was pretty sly.

dragonhawk 08-12-2003 11:26 AM

Resident Evil: Dead Aim made me jump a couple of times.

The first time I ever jumped from a game was playing the Rescue on Fractalus by Lucas Arts. Tried to rescue a guy and a Alien started beating on the Rocket window. I jumped.

The next time was the Rocketeer on my Amiga. Made it to the Moon and found out who really was behind the Nazis... Then the Alien "split the screen" and you were supposed to shoot it. It was about 2:00 in the morning and I was tired. I jumped and woke my parents up :)

theinfamous 08-12-2003 02:47 PM

yup, the first silent hill scared the shit out of me. also, who can forget the part in resident evil when the dog popped out of the window?

HeadyIncognito 08-12-2003 03:03 PM

I got freaked out by the half life demo I played once...

Ganguro 08-12-2003 03:44 PM

THEY LIVE!!
that mod scared the crap out of me..

mrquackers 08-12-2003 05:59 PM

Clive Barker's Undying.

Seriously. A scary-ass game - and a REALLY, REALLY good one that never got the credit it deserved. Look for it in bargain bins and do yourself a favor - pick it up!

Mr.Deflok 08-12-2003 06:15 PM

Silent Hill 3 is absolutely amazing, real "shit-your-pants" material.

Alien Vs. Predator 2 also is classic, nothing like walking down a dark corridor and turning on your flashlight to find a swarm of Aliens all over the ceiling!

H12 08-12-2003 06:40 PM

I've never played any of these games except part of Resident Evil 2 (I didn't like it only because of its controls, and my brother tells me most of the survival horror game controls are the same besides Eternal Darkness), but I've watched my bro play alot of those games. Jesus, the whole first Silent Hill game had me fearing anything I couldn't see in the dark for awhile. Eternal Darkness was always fun to watch, too; everything from crazy sanity effects to the "bath-tub" scene that's already been mentioned, that game'll catch your attention real quick.

From my bro, I hear there's a REALLY scary room in Silent Hill 3, too...to avoid possible spoilers, I won't comment on the room other than that it has a huge mirror for a wall and has a sink in it. The way he told me about it though, I couldn't decide if I wanted to see it or save myself a pair of underwear.

AntHackerX 08-12-2003 08:59 PM

Yeah, I'm gonna have to go with Eternal Darkness, System Shock 2, Resident Evil(remake) and...the Doom 3 Alpha.

Doom 3 because it was so slow on my comp that things just popped out all scary like all the time. Freaky stuff.

Oh...and the AVP games too. As Marines, nothing scarier than the motion sensor going off and not being able to figure out where the aliens are actually at...heh.

You mean the one where the room gets covered in _________ ? Fuck that had me freaked the fuck out. There's a lot more like that throughout the game, with whole buildings going that way.

funbob 08-12-2003 10:01 PM

I just finished Splinter Cell, I loved that game....

TerresqueÜ 08-12-2003 11:37 PM

I was too wussy to finish Silent Hill II...There was a whole thread about it on 3.0...

Silent Hill III looks like just too much! I mean I'm brave and stuff...but I hate horror movies and all that shit...I mean I love watching em but I hate the after effects...Jebus...just the same as reading Paranoia at 3 am.

If you're like me but wanna play Silent Hill then you should play it with at least one other person in the room...Preferably a friend who has beaten it before and can keep yelling at you for doing stupid things.

Lasereth 08-13-2003 04:22 AM

I beat Eternal Darkness about a month ago. INCREDIBLE game; second only to Metroid Prime for being the best Gamecube title to date. Silent Hill 2 is freaky as hell as well as the first one. The Resident Evil series is pretty scary sometimes, but Silent Hill and Eternal Darkness take the cake.

-Lasereth

CyCo PL 08-13-2003 04:36 AM

Friday the 13th on NES... probably still the scariest game I've ever played.

grayman 08-13-2003 05:32 AM

Gabriel Knight: The Sins of the Fathers on PC back from the early nineties. It was about a guy investigating voodoo murders and there is a part where you are sneaking around in the voodoo temple with really creepy music. I was playing it late at night and was just scared shitless.

NYNE 08-14-2003 11:46 AM

What is the most frighting game u played

I will have to say all of the slient hill series......the first one i never play before scared the shit out of me and since the graphics got more real they just keep getting scary and scary.

Tex 08-14-2003 11:59 AM

I don't think I've played any games yet that truly "frightened" me, but wait 'till you play Doom 3...

Doom 3 is going to kick some serious ass.

johnnymysto 08-14-2003 12:22 PM

I've got Silent Hill, but haven't played it for more than 1 hour. But I can tell that it would be a scary, scary game.

Doom 2 is the scariest I've played. While wearing earphones. Sounds all around. Monsters lurking. Awesome experience.

Ganguro 08-14-2003 12:50 PM

I forgot to mention Fatal Frame for the ps2..
Seriously. it's kinda messed up.

Dank 08-14-2003 03:25 PM

I've heard alot of people mention the Silent Hill series and I'm gonna have to agree with them.....Silent Hill 1 had some of the creepiest shit ever put into a game....damn I can still remember those babies with razor blades...arg....

True, although the second half isnt as much scary as it is strange. It's scary mainly because of the sounds. They freak you out all the time, cause you never know when its something in the distance or right behind you... Also I ran like hell the first time one of the monks attacked me.

NeverBorn 08-14-2003 05:40 PM

Undying was sweet. ED wasn't too bad althought there were scenes. Playing the first Silent Hill at night with candlelight was pretty damn freaky

glytch 08-14-2003 05:46 PM

Anyone remember (I think it was called) Dracula for the SegaCD? It was all live action video, pretty good stuff. For really scary though, first the Resident Evil series simply because it was the first big scare for me. Second, and definately the best series, Silent Hill. Those games scare the bejeebus out of me, but I'm heading out to buy the third one tonight.

Also, honorable mention goes to Fatal Frame. When I read about the premise, I thought it was kinda stupid (You "capture" ghosts with your camera), but after playing it I have to say that it is genuinely VERY scary and a great game.

Jonsgirl 08-15-2003 12:52 AM

I jumped like hell for Enternal Darknes, but I was terrified of Silent Hill 2. I loved it though! I'm looking forward to S.H. 3 and I want to try fatal frame, if I can ever find it.

collide 08-15-2003 01:18 AM

Goddammit. Any time I'm playing a Resident Evil game and a dog or crow comes out of nowhere. And the mellow silence that is abruptly interrupted by the sudden fortissimo of the soundtrack. WTF. It's just not nice to make me jump like that.

Also, playing Counterstrike and thinking you're in a safe place where no one can see you and it's real quiet... then suddenly you hear a loud gunshot and it either hits or misses and you jump from your seat and scramble around your field of view looking for the direction of the gunshot. It's so wrong and so evil. Grrr.

bobbles 08-15-2003 04:19 AM

In res evil 2 when they zombies first jumped out of the window, but that was more of a sudden shock thing than actually being 'scary'

nostalgic1 08-15-2003 06:16 AM

nothing freaked me out quite as much as silent hill 2.. there was just something about the atmosphere of that game and the grisly images on the screen...

...it also didn't help that i was playing it alone in the middle of the night with all the lights off...

damn, i scare myself silly sometimes.

bussman 08-15-2003 08:52 AM

Quake 1 freaked me out when you first encounter one of those big white guys that shoot the lightning.

Also Natural Selection freaks me out all the time. I'm constantly being suprised in that game:)

Omar12 08-15-2003 09:25 AM

Doom
Resident Evil
Silent Hill 1
I finished the game in mute and playing before 7 PM. :)

I want to play the third one.

Silent Hill scared me more than Resident Evil, because it was more a psychological manner, the mood of the game makes it scary, like the movies The Exorcist and The Ring. Resident Evil makes you jump, because they hav ethe surprise element on it.

Silent Hill is great, that first moment when you have to follow your "daughter" into that alley and then get jumped by monsters not knowing wut to do. And then theres the school with little children wimpering:crazy:

Vyk 08-15-2003 01:26 PM

some of the resident evil games were definitely very creepy. Fun stuff. Cheesy like an 80's horror flick but you're in control. weee!

Hrothgar 08-15-2003 04:33 PM

System Shock 2. I had to play it in the daytime with people home otherwise I couldn't play. The sounds of the zombies moaning and the voices you hear mumbling in the background give you goosebumps. The first time a ghost appeared I jumped. This is definitely a scary classic. There is a new mod to this game that enhaces the graphics making it that much more visually appealing.

mrquackers 08-15-2003 07:31 PM

System Shock 2 is definitely another classic. And having played Doom 3 a little today (I love having special access), I can guaran-damn-tee the game will make you piss yourself - assuming you have the hardware to support it.

iktoweya 08-16-2003 12:54 PM

GAH that was some spooky shit.

t3m3st 08-16-2003 09:49 PM

come to think of it, the video game the scared me the most was Duck Tales on the NES. That Transylvania level gave me nightmares. My mom had to cover the TV with a blanket at night or else I couldn't fall asleep. Ha... beat that modern survival horror game

Gortexfogg 08-17-2003 05:22 PM

Oh man, when I played Quake for the first time it scared me like nothing before. All the erie sounds coming from hallways... I'm surprised I finished that one.

panbert 08-17-2003 10:19 PM

The original Alone In The Dark.
All other sequels have sucked. Even Resident Evil & Silent Hill kind of followed its footsteps.
Remember my first experience with Alone In The Dark. Had no idea it was a horror game, thought it was another lame adventure game after 5 minutes of play. Was going to stop and play something else when a "thing" jumped through the window pane and scared the crap out of me. Then it just got better and I got hooked.

Booboo 08-18-2003 05:05 PM

I've played a few of the resident evil games.. but nothing really got m like the first one.(was the youngest then) with the dogs jumping through the window.. that Really made me jump=P

doctorphibes 08-18-2003 11:07 PM

Those damn dogs... urgh.

The AvP games were cool for a bit, before I got frustrated. It's too damn hard playing as the Marine to live for very long. At first, it's tense as all get out, but then it just gets too stupidly hard.

Oh, and with RE:make, moving the dogs to a different scene was FUCKED UP. I was all, oh, gotta watch out, I know this part, and ... nothing. Then, moving back through the "empty" hall... grrr.

^dude 08-19-2003 09:46 AM

I haven't played many scary games, although Silent Hill scared the **** out of me, i haven't played 2 or 3 though.

TerraFORM 08-19-2003 03:09 PM

Single player Half-life scared the shit out of me a couple of times.

BurntToast 08-19-2003 07:03 PM

The first game that I remember that scared me was the original Clock Tower for PSX... Crappy game, crappy gfx, crappier interface and controls BUT man that was the SCARIEST game. That son of a bitch would pop out with his scissors from anywhere... even if you just ran away from him on the complete opposite side of the house... you get there and BAM there is the crippled foot dragging crazy dude already waiting for you... yikes. I think i'll sleep with my night light on tonight.

m0rpheus 08-22-2003 01:46 AM

Resident Evil 2.

Try playing alone, in a basement, at night. Now that's DAMN SCARY!!!.

Ramega 08-22-2003 06:13 PM

I remember the original Doom as if it were last week, and I played it when it was first released. Scared the FUCK out of me in that room with the lights flashing on and off. Lights on, lights off, lights onFUCKINGMONSTERINYOURFACE!!!

More recently, I stopped playing Undying because it was too scary. I'm a wuss. ;) Can't wait to see Freddy vs. Jason though.

What games have truly scared the crap out of you, and what parts?

Resident Evil 2: When the licker crashes through the window

Silent Hill: When the body falls out of the locker

Johnny Rotten 08-26-2003 08:55 AM

Resident Evil 1: When the demon dogs crash through the windows in the hallway near the beginning. My friend actually threw the controller at the TV and refused to play any more.

mrquackers 08-26-2003 05:41 PM

System Shock II

The RE2 licker moment scared the holy hell out of me.

But lately Silent Hill is better. It doesn't have the jumpy scares of RE, but it does have a sustaining terror.

I hear Fatal Frame is scary as all hell though.

Oh yes!

The School is one twisted place, but the ambience of the non-existant floors of the Hospital is just mind-bending, random noises, psycho-style music, ghosts, and zombies with kitchen knives!

Moonduck 08-27-2003 07:04 PM

Silent Hill.

When it came out, my friends and I sat for hours playing it. When the body fell out of the locker, three grown men all screamed like little girls. I think most of us had nightmares afterward with the air raid sirens droning in the background.

To this day, when listening to the radio at night and a burst of static comes up, I look around out of sheer habit.

Loved that game.

I had a similar experience w/ the Interrogation Room in Resident Evil 2. There were five of us, and we were all about 20 years old.

We all screamed like hell, then after a moment realized how funny it was and started laughing our asses off.

drewg 08-28-2003 05:26 AM

Hmm... I haven't been really scared of any game since I played Zombies ate my Neighbours when I was a kid. The game itself wasn't at all scary, but the way the humans screamed if they where killed by zombies freaked me out, so I had to quit playing it.

The missions in Thief where there were a lot of zombies was also a bit scary, but in a positive way. I remember I used to play it with a friend, were we would sit for hours in almost complete silence, only wispering to each other because we were afraid the guards whould here us if we made to much noise ;)

Resident Evil 2 was never scary, it only had a very good atmosphere which I enjoyed a lot. I never played it during the day, I had to sit in a dark room to get the right feeling ;)

Aliens Vs. Predator 2.

Playing as the Colonial Marine, every single fucking time that motion detector beeps just once, and then stops, you're ready to jump out of your skin.

Also, the first time you see the Predator's targeting beam on the floor in front of you you'll be needing a change of underwear. God, how I love that game . . .

MrWynd 08-28-2003 10:08 AM

the first thief game scaired me. I couldn't play it alone on the level where you're in the crypt.

Devilinmypants 08-29-2003 05:59 AM

Alone in the dark, when i was 12 it was awesome. way cooler than anything else. Even new nightmare is scary.

pod19 08-30-2003 02:53 PM

coke babies 08-30-2003 06:58 PM

As mentioned before, Undying. This game seriously scared me. Games like Res Evil are creepy and all, but only Undying has actually made me consider not playing annymore cause I was actually too scared to go on. That takes a LOT to do.

hu-man 08-31-2003 12:17 AM

Somebody mentioned Eternal Darkness and its revolutionary insanity effects. There's another game - made simultaneously, so none of the two has 'stolen' any ideas from the other. It's called Dark Corners Of The Earth, and if you know who Lovecraft is, you know what kind of a game this is going to be. Lovecraft is one of the best horror writers ever, and it's sneaky suspense and shadows and not really knowing what's going to happen next... It's a FPS, and you can go surely insane... see stuff that isn't really there, that sort of thing. You can get vertigo too. And all of this in first person - and get this: without any interface. No health bar, no powerups, and if you wanna see how many bullets left in the chamber, you look at your gun and check it that way. If anybody played the pen and paper roleplaying game Call Of Cthulhu, they get sort of the idea of how scary it can be. The game's licensed by Chaosium, by the way, so everything's original. Check out the screenshots: http://www.callofcthulhu.co.uk
It's not out yet, but hastily getting there.

danieltiger 08-31-2003 04:27 AM

silent hill at 1 in the morning. There is nothing as utterly creepy as running for your life from midgets with shanks and overanxious canabalistic love slaves.

I'd also like to say that what made silent hill the scariest was the sound moreso than the chasing baddies. That missile siren really freaked the hell out of me.

Spanky Johnson 08-31-2003 09:43 AM

I don't recall any game giving me as many jumps as the original Doom, when it first came out and no one had ever seen anything like it.

JcL 08-31-2003 10:45 AM

System Shock 2 was very freaky...

Half Life in many ways was scary, but on a different level. It was full of suspense, uncertainty. With the total immersion in the game theres some dread over what may be around the next corner. Headcrabs jumping at you from the shadows in vents... The giant blind tentacle thing in the rocket testing chamber, banging randomly with the metal clanking echoing around... its eerie...

Goomba 09-01-2003 07:09 AM

Resident Evil 0: On the train after you get the ring. The zombie falls out of the closet and starts chomping on you.

dimbulb 09-01-2003 07:28 AM

RE is scary,
but the first Doom would have to take the cake.....
i used to have sleepless nights after playing it..

CityOfAngels 09-01-2003 07:35 AM

Also in Silent Hill, the part when the telephones ring, you pick up, and it's Cheryl saying, "Daddy where are you? Help me daddy!..." <-- paraphrasing. That part doesn't jump my adrenaline but it sure creeped me out.

Spartak 09-01-2003 12:59 PM

Oh yes! That bit was messed up, but the giant video screens in the mall gave me a bigger rush imo.

AlphaFox830 09-01-2003 06:50 PM

i would have to throw down for Alien Vs. Preaditor 1. now that was some freaky shit. a similar game was alien trilogy for ps1 way back when. The resident evil series gets a hononable mention, as does the early fade to black game for ps1.

Let's see...I believe the other thread was just "scary games in general," but this one is actually asking for scary moments. In Resident Evil 1 when the dogs jump through the window, of course. I honestly couldn't pick it up for a year after that. I actually beat it later on though.

Resident Evil 2, when the Neo-Tyrant bursts through the wall right after you're walking back down the hall towards the camera. Scared the FUCK out of me. Hmm...in Silent Hill 1, anytime during the school or hospital. Those that have played it know the horror. :)

In Eternal Darkness for Gamecube, just about that entire game had me on my nerves end. Except for when you get the Elephant Gun with Nitro Slugs a little after half-way through the game with that one character. I could kill anything with it so it made it seem a *bit* less scary. A few noticable scary moments were checking the bathtub with Alex in the second floor of the mansion and the first time I heard knockings coming from the other sides of doors in the mansion. Then you go through and nothing is there. Then you walk back through and your head explodes, game over. Ha ha, then the game would pop back up to right before you went through the door in the first place. My hands were shaking the entire time the Sanity meter was low; expect WEIRD shit to happen when it is. Fucking screams coming from everywhere, people screaming to "get them out of here," and the blood dripping from the ceilings just creeped the fuck out of me. I had to play for short periods of time or I simply couldn't go on. Now that I think about it, Eternal Darkess is easily on par with Silent Hill on the creep-out psycho-shit factor.

Oh man. Gotta love the Survival Horror games.

There's nothing better then playing the gamecube Resident Evil in the dark late at night. For some reason those freakin' sharks nearly gave me a heart attack.

Also, the knocking from random walls in Eternal Darkness would give me the chills quite often.
