never played as a player but was a DM once

MPower 02-10-2005 03:05 PM

Hooked up with some old friends and am starting a new campaign after 20yrs off. Everyone had some books in closets and attics. Should be fun. We are going to try to meet every 3wks or so at different houses so we dont annoy wives and kids too much.

MoonDog 02-10-2005 04:52 PM

I started playing D&D Basic in the mid-1970's, moved through Expert, Campaign, Master, etc. Had the Immortal stuff, but never played it. Moved into the AD&D 1st and 2nd edition stuff big time, and played up until about 1988. Then all my group split up, college, etc.

Never got into 3rd edition.

Cool thing was that, just before TSR was purchased by Wizards of the COast, I got to do some freelance work for TSR. Basically it was researching product to help TSR create a master database for each campaign world. You listed places, people, things, etc, so that authors could refer back to the database and make sure they weren't deviating from established criteria.

I got paid in product, so finishing research on a Dragonlance novel would get me anywhere from $50-$75 in AD&D product. Oh, I was like a pig in shit! Eventually the program ended not long after TSR was bought out.

I have sold thousands of dollars of my D&D/AD&D stuff on eBay. I sold my collection of 62 AD&D 1st & 2nd edition modules for over $700. I also unloaded my collection of box sets, rulebooks, lead figures, etc. I'm even selling stuff on eBay right now, and plan on getting rid of my Planescape, Spelljammer, and Birthright stuff in the next month or so. Look for moonjj on eBay to see if I have anything for sale.

Anyhow, I miss the hell out of that game. I bought the 3.0 rulebooks out of curiosity, but I haven't even looked at them.

Dude, if your friends play D&D, they are nerds. They will LOVE teaching you about how to play.

thermight 02-11-2005 09:37 AM

I used to play. 1st edition rules only. I am trying to interest my 8 & 9 yr olds in playing. Start them out right.

Also enjoyed rolemaster. It was not as much hack and slash as D&D

Also played champions. I'll introduce that to the kids later.

Wish I had the free time I had as a kid.

MoonDog 02-17-2005 09:10 PM

Hell, I used to play the Steve Jackson "Car Wars" games too. Also, Gamma World, Star Frontiers, Top Secret, and Twilight 2000.

FngKestrel 02-17-2005 09:11 PM

Dude, Car Wars. Loved all the Steve Jackson games. I have a bunch of Toon sourcebooks floating around somewhere.

ICER 02-17-2005 09:45 PM

I play AD&D with some friends about once a month now.

keeb 02-17-2005 10:06 PM

i think it would be fun to learn to play. ive heard alot about it and have been considering starting to learn how to play.

NeverBorn 02-18-2005 01:27 AM

Keeb, hate to threadjack but remember there are many other roleplaying games out there besides Dungeouns and Dragons. No need to fatten d20s wallet more than it already is, not that I don't play D20, but its only because of player ignorance, thats the only system anyone seems to know.

Dwayne 02-18-2005 02:43 PM

Ive been playing D+D for four years now. I love the escape from the real world it provides for those glorious 5 hours a week. I am usually a cleric and Rogue/Theif is my second favorite choice.

Yeah. DM wanted to get us through the early levels. I expect he'll slow down once we're around 5th or 6th level. I'm trying to do the same thing in my campaign, but based on the last few sessions, I think I'll slow down earlier. It would be good to increase player satisfaction in ways other than XP.

As an aside, by playing so much in other campaigns, I'm really learning what not to do in my own. I'm really learning the importance of choosing the correct challenge, pacing, and using the rules as a way to keep things fair rather than as a crutch. I'm learning that die rolling and rules do not a good game make. Those things should be known well by the DM in order to keep them in the background, but then, I'm preaching to the converted...

I hear what you are saying, but to be honest I am starting to prefer d20 to the other systems I know. We were playing Earthdawn, which has the most complicated die system I've dealt with and I just found it tedious instead of interesting.

I always thought systems like Battletech, that use two six-sided dice, were interesting, because the extremes were statistically less likely to happen, which makes more sense.

That said, d20 is pretty easy to pick up and learn. Although, Call of Cthulhu as a d20 system bothers me for some reason.

I personally am in love with Inquisitors D100 system, percantages ahoy!

Had these since the early 80s. Haven't played for about 5 years, though I'll probably go back to it one day...

Rules Lawyer, Taking over. Arg. Ahh.

If it's broken, then fix it. Now the "Gloves of True Strike" is not that bad. Cast the spell on one round, and the next round you get +20 with only one attack. You can hit your victim once every 2 rounds, or you can, say for example, use a sword in each hand and try to hit your victim twice in each round. Try to hit twice per round or hit anything once every two rounds. And the market price should be at least 8,000 GP ( X4 to price for spells w/duration in rounds).

And I'm currently playing D&D 3.5 halfling rogue. I'm usually a Monk or Fighter or Paladin. It feels odd playing a fragile character.

Man, I had all those at one point in time. Not exactly sure what happened to them. Probably traded them away for newer editions. Sniff.

spindles 02-21-2005 02:38 PM

I actually had the original monster manual (these all had *really* terrible covers originally), but a school friend borrowed and never returned it :(

Scorpion23 02-22-2005 07:21 AM

I had a friend in high school find a 1st ed. Monster Manual in the school library. He immediately "lost" it, and paid the $5 fine :-)

It was mint condition except for the stamp the library put on it.

PDFs. I still have all the books, but thanks to ebook rpg groups and such, I have every book and module for every rpg (almost) 1ed thru 3.5 in pdf format. Next time we play, everyone will just bring their laptops and have access to all the books without all the mess. Technology is fun.

Onions 02-22-2005 02:39 PM

Never played though I did own a bunch of rulebooks!

I like this idea in theory, but I feel with my group it would not work. First of all, I like looking prices and feats and such up in a hardback book. Second, I feel like laptops would be a distraction. Finally, it's important for players to not have access to some books, and what are the chances two players are going to need a book at the same time (unless it's the PHB, and most groups have a few of those at least)?

cellophanedeity 03-17-2005 09:55 PM

I've been in two games of D&D so far.

Most of my friends are big RPG fanatics, but I'm a newbie, so I don't get invited to play too often. -_-

Luckily my love is running a session over the summer. I'm excited and feel like gushing over my new character, but I promise I won't.

FngKestrel 03-17-2005 11:49 PM

I think all the people in this thread can appreciate this pinnacle of role-playing.

Hmm... I saw that somewhere. Maybe slashdot? Definitely kicks the geekiness up a notch (in a good way).

Coppertop 03-18-2005 10:50 AM

Holy fuck. I think I just creamed my pants. Where was that when I gamed?

Tusko 03-18-2005 03:41 PM

yea, played 3rd-4th edition.

found the phs/dmg etc on the internet (400 pages or so in word/.txt format) printed them all off at school (dmg, ph, monstrous, and one or two others)

haha, we milked it good.

and we found used copies of said books for like $5 at the local comic book shop.

more people should play.

a few of us, over a summer, were all bored and had nothing to do. (this is a very un-D&D type group) so we decided to play. me having the most experience, DM'd, and we had a blast. whenever people would come over or call us, we always made some excuse and never told anyone what we were doing. sometimes we even snuck away form parties for a smoke (i.e. fight a few last orcs in the garage)

haha it was great. never finished our campaign, still have 3 more high-wizards and a lich-lord controlling a massive horde to fight off. also on the verge of civil war AND invasion of waterdeep. as well as the complete overthrow of neverwinter and candlekeep.

heh.

Ok, so what is Ebberon for? What's the basis?

Ebberon is a "high magic" world, where magic finds use in everyday practices.
It's just a new gaming setting for D&D, like Forgotten Realms.
