COD: BlackOps

Really did not like it. Thumbs down and would recommend NOT purchasing the game. Graphics were extremely sloppy. Same with the physics. Story-line also seemed extremely corny at times. Bullet flight times were slow, firearms seemed like they had a ROF akin to 120rpm instead of the typical 600-900 range.

The game tried to allow controlling aircraft, but rather than adding another dimension in to the game, it just seemed like another sloppy gimmick that added nothing to the game.

After playing the game, instead of enjoying it, I felt like I wanted 5 hours of my life back.

5/10 stars.

I recently tried Modern Warfare 2, which had impressive graphics, but questionable weapons balance and atrocious, borderline propagandistic writing. Not only that, but the single player was very, very short.

How's multiplayer on Black Ops? I've found the area where COD games shine are co-op and multiplayer.

I'm liking certain aspects of multi-player, but a lot leaves me feeling like I wasted $60.

I like that you can customize your weapons, red dot reticles and face camo, but I hate having to buy everything to be able to do it.
If you want the really powerful gun, you have to buy a certain amount of the other guns to unlock the classified guns, then you have to buy that gun, too. Plus any attachments.
Also, you can't have an under gun attachment (like a grenade launcher or flame thrower) paired with say a red dot or silencer. You can have a silencer and a red dot, though.

The perk you buy to use two attachments at once is called Warlord in Black Ops, instead of Bling.
I'm not sure if Warlord Pro allows the use of a grenade launcher with a red dot, or if it was like Bling Pro and affects the secondary weapons like in MW2.

Graphics-wise, a few things are kind of cartoon-y (like the graphics for when you're throwing grenades), but most of the graphics are realistic looking, to me. (speaking as someone who's never been in a gunfight)

Right now, I'd rather play multi-player on MW2, but BO is growing on me. (hehe)

As for single-player, I've only played one level, and it seemed kinda rushed, so I don't have an opinion on it yet.

Multi-player: 6/10

CoD4 (MW) was still the best one to me.
5 (WAW) was a different ball of yarn and this one plays parallel to dimitri/reznov in a roundabout manner

Personally I went thru it in a single sit down session, I have no reason to purchase it though since I have no interest in multiplayer with people I don't know.

I still liked it better than MW2 though, MW2 was garbage.

Though I still figured out what was going on, or what the "twist" was going to be by the time I was playing thru one of those Vietnam flashbacks and the guy was like "what the hell is wrong with you?" I had my suspicions during the freakout scene with JFK.

The whole story was convoluted as hell though.

Yea, the story was extremely convoluted. Tempted to sell the game to recapture some of my $60, but my brothers want to play it when I see them for Thanksgiving.

I hear MW1 was the shit though. Worth purchasing?

As someone who agrees with you completely- just beat Black Ops and was very unimpressed, disliked WaW and didn't play MW2 more than a few hours, the original Modern Warfare is seminal - it defined the "modern" modern shooter genre and is easily one of best singleplayer campaigns I've ever played.

WOW, just purchased Modern Warfare 1 used for $25....HUGE difference.

The weaponry and accessories seem *very well* researched (but for the POS red dot sights that probably wouldn't last a month on a deployment). You can stack up on doors and actually breach in the proper way (clearing corners). You bound from obstacle to obstacle with the AI covering you. The firefights actually seem like firefights, rather than just waves of humanoids to mow down.

I think Infinity Ward really did their research with the game, and it shows in the execution. For example, in MW1, the C-130 mission is thoroughly enjoyable--using 105mm cannons and 40mm cannons to provide air support for evac. In contrast, the SR-71 mission in COD: BO, seemed pointless (tell the ground team to move here by pressing X-ooooh! fun!).

In COD: BO, the execution just seems sloppy. After playing certain zombie levels (with an 8 rd M14??), I really got the feeling that COD: BO was more of an arcade shooter than anything else.

Part of the reason why I thoroughly enjoyed COD: MW2 (the first Modern Warfare that I bought) was that it made the player feel as if they were IN theater. For example, in the first mission, you react to an ambush, after which you dismount and clear the buildings from which the ambush occurred. The whole time, you're shooting, moving and communicating with the AI. Bullets are zipping around, and it really gets pretty heart pounding. Also, who can forget the Navy SEAL mission where you infil from a sub, take out the security on an oil rig, and then proceed to jump on a little bird to fly to the next mission?

Anyway. Save your money. Don't purchase Black Ops. Over hyped and under developed.

The multi-player is growing on me. They seemed to have resolved some of the major issues with MW2.

1) No more danger close!
2) Scavenger doesn't give noob-tube grenades
3) No more commando

This basically stops two of the cheapest classes in MW2 (run & knife and noob-tube).

Buying the weapons isn't a big deal because you earn money so fast. Right now I have like 60K saved up and i've only been playing for a few days and I have been buying things as I want them.

Also warlord pro gives you an extra lethal and tactical grenade (which is awesome).

Right now the biggest flaw is that the voting for the next map provides you with a new choice, the old map, or a random map. The problem with this is that noobs keep voting for nuke town over and over which is nothing but a granade/RC-car spam fest. Also the new care package sucks, it takes a 5 kill streak to get and 90% of the time you get something worse then what you have could have got otherwise.

I love the multi-player. WAY better than MW2, which was nothing but noob-tubers and commando knifers.

I've only played the first 3 chapters of the campaign, but that's of secondary importance to me

Not a big fan of black ops, been trying it on the wii, it's obviously a shoddy port (such as when one moment you're killing bad guys and the next for no reason you're watching clouds float past, then your shoes, then you die, then you die again during the white load screen...), but that doesn't make up for everything.

overall i found the game far more confusing about what i was actually meant to do, and the guns are pathetic at times. Just glad i rented it really...

i like modern black ops.. although modern warfare was better in many ways..

first of all the single player was way more fun and the "story" was cooler.. the ingmae cutscenes are pretty good in both parts..

but i hate some of the new maps.. and the wager matches will be boring soon..

i hope there will be a new map pack soon..

Taking into consideration that I've only played the Wii versions of MW and BO; I found that the learning curve for BO is much easier for players new to multiplayer first person shooters. I never got much into it with MW as I was too busy having my ass handed to me. I've found that I do much better in BO.

I really enjoyed the single player in MW and MW2. Black Ops had a few decent moments in the single player campaign but overall it just felt like I was out there by myself killing thousands of bad guys to no real purpose. I figured since the game was called Black Ops it would involve more infiltration and sneaking around rather than going from one massive fire fight to another. Sadly they disappointed me there.

The multiplayer in Black Ops is the best so far though. It's way more balanced than MW2 (as mentioned above preventing noob tubing and knife running). It still is funny though when people try to "knife spec" and they just get mowed down.

I also agree with one of the above posters that the rate of fire on the weapons seems way too high. This is annoying because it really affects accuracy and kinda makes for a lot of "spray and pray" moments that seem to be more luck based if you survive.

The other major issue that I have with the game is that the bulk of the weapons and weapon attachments you use didn't exist in the time frame that the game takes place in. Most of the assault rifles in the game weren't developed and used until the mid to late 1970s. I'm fairly certain that they didn't have red dot sites in the 1960s nor would they have had underbarrel grenade launchers, shotguns, or flamethrowers (wtf?).

Stuff like that really bothers me because it just makes the whole game seem sloppy. If you want to make a realistic period shooter you should probably do your research and give us period weapons.

The graphics and sound seem to be of less quality than MW or MW2. Now I do have the PC version and I've seen the XBox version now and it looks like the Xbox version does have better graphics than the PC and it definitely runs a hell of a lot smoother.

If Treyarch continues to make Call of Duty games I just may be done with the series. Overall I am disappointed with the game but at least the multiplayer makes me feel like I didn't get totally cheated.
