Super Mario World was my personal favorite and really the only one I played beginning to end. I had one hellofa a time with tubular, if I recall correctly you have 99 men, with the very last man I had that day, I finally completed tubular.

I, too, thought that Super Mario World was the penultimate Mario Bros. institution, and I would always love to go back time and again to play this classic game (though I'm quite sure you start off with 4, 5 or 6 lives at the beginning, your character, plus a "x5" at the top, but as you progressed, the maximum number of lives alotted was "x99"). The thing is, up until a few years ago, I had never actually beaten the game (or gotten past the Dense Forest level, also known as castle #5). I took the shortcut of the Star Route Warp inside the Forest, and hitched a ride there, beat the first Star level, and that opened immediately to Bowser's castle. It took me almost a decade to actually beat the entire game, get through the chocolate mountains, beat the bonus "tubular, radical" levels in the center of the Star Map (which, ironically, I beat before I ever knew how to open up the Chocolate Mountains, or Ring of Fire maps) and finally collect every single instance of those oval Yoshi coins. Even though those that had a dalliance with both this game and Super Mario Bros. 3, which I think was released a year later, and is by far the more popular of the two, (I always thought it was over-rated) my preference was beating up on Bowser's kids before I knocked ol' King Koopa outta his clown car and rescued the day. Plus, it had this awesome Easter Egg once you got 100%. http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/4002/mainfj.jpg The masked koopa, courtesy of mariomonsters |

Your detailed description brought back memories from at least 10 years ago. I played this for a long time refusing to check online for hints or secrets because I wanted to do it on my own. A friend dropped by and introduced me to the Top Secret area which is situated behind the Ghost House on the Donut Plains. This was the beginning of my enlightenment. :) http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...ecret_area.png |

Super Mario World was released in 1991 worldwide I believe with the release of the SNES. Also, I love the hard star challenges. I still go back and play SMW every once and awhile. |
My son is a huge fan of the Mario universe of characters. I look forward to extracting the age-appropriate pictures from this thread for him to enjoy.

Pertaining to the 10 bonus levels found in the middle of "Star Road": I actually found those easy enough (except for stage 4: "Awesome", and Stage 2: "Tubular", which is known to be one of the hardest levels in the entire game, if not the absolute hardest.) The kicker is that in order to access it, you need to first complete and find the secret exit in Star World 5, which was without a doubt, one of my least favorite levels to accomplish without any power-ups or Yoshi at the start of it, because it was so hard, and winding (if Tubular was the hardest, then this level really gave it a run for its money). If you started out tiny without a cape, or without a Yoshi, I'd have a read hard time believing you completed this level, let alone actually found a way to get to the secret keyhole. And once you beat all eight, this happened: Easter Eggs? click to show - - - Here's a nifty little background wallpaper I came across entitled "World 1-1, Mushroom Kingdom [3-D]". http://i41.tinypic.com/2yuyofc.jpg |
If Tubular is the level I'm thinking of (the level where you have to get those "p" balloons and float through the entire level), then there's actually a way to beat that level without cape/yoshi/getting any "p" balloons. Though, it practically requires frame perfect accuracy. Outside of this level, there is no other level in the entire game that has ever given me trouble. I've always found Mario games to be extremely easy.
And, I'm pretty sure the "large yoshi" trick does not exist. |
Yeah, Tubular is the level where you are pretty much floating the entire way through, and praying to yourself that those pesky koopa paratroopas keep to themselves.
Still, I absolutely hated Star World 5 (and for that matter, the level with the secret entrance before getting to Castle #5) because for years upon years, those two separate points kept me from advancing any further. It was torture not knowing where to look to find those hidden keyholes. But, yeah, I do get it. The first time I bought the GBA version of SMW, I think I beat it within 8 hours, and achieved 95% completion within the first 11 hours of playing it. - - - http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3444/...f168cdac74.jpg game over by jublin |
Thats tubular, with the p balloons, thats why it was so frickin difficult. In the next board "Way Cool" I was able to fly through it, once again if I recall correctly.
It took some time to get good enough at flying to attempt this, seems like once you were up in the air you had to push "backwards" on the directional controller, in opposition to the direction you were flying, then keep "pumping" it. Make sense? Probably not. |
Wow, without a cape or balloon this is awesome.
I can't remember but there was this incredibly hard ROM for SMW that I played awhile back and it was really fun but sooo frustrating. |
I've never played a ROM of anything pertaining to SMW because, for the better part of the past 20 years or so, I've always had it on hand, either by way of the original SNES cartridge, or the slightly re-tooled game-on-the-go GBA version.
However, I do remember one downloadable version of Super Mario, and as far as I know, it's still a pretty good mildly-entertaining PC diversion, and it's still highly-acclaimed by some. Super Mario Forever - - - - - also, there's this: http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l1...pwi0o1_500.jpg The Sheriff and His Deputy, by Charity Ryan [superpunch.] |
Yeah I still have my snes version but this rom I am talking about is something completely different from the regular game. Its built insanely hard and each stage completely different than the regular game. Its awesome but some of the most frustrating stuff I've ever played.

Mario World by *Orioto author's comments: I'm feeling i progress and it's a good thing. I really wanted to have a painted "ghibli style" background, and to re-imagine the Mario World from scratch (and not from a screen of the game). I studied a lot of nature painting to have this result, the mood etc... ! I hope you like it^^ update2 : An igoogle theme developer made a theme with the picture (Mario World). Feel free to use and share it if you like ! [link] |
By the by, this was one of my favorite levels to go back to time and again. It had a lot of cool, hidden elements, as well as housing one of the rarest instances of an ice level (the game only had two complete ice levels, but this level had an underground pipe "sojourn" that was icy as well). What am I talking about ice for, though? This level was all about the lava, and the 'floating bone raft'. Oh, and I can't believe I didn't see it at first, but the artist actually went through all the trouble to show the effects of what would happen if you escaped off Yoshi's back right as you are jumping over the lava; it's the "slowly-descending Terminator-into-lava" ending for him (but he didn't have that exoskeleton to keep him warm).

'Keeping It Real' by Aled Lewis (Fatheed) author's comments: Like a lot of people my age, I grew up on Nintendo, so Mario was present for much of my formative years. I’d never really given much thought to the fact that Mario, for all his heroics, plies his trade as a humble plumber, and I was amused by the thought of the chubby little Italian guy bleeding the air out of a radiator or cleaning out the discharge pipe under a sink. I tried to create the design in such a way that it you could recognise the character through the context and a few visual cues. All the elements worked out well, and the fact that he has undone his overalls and taken his hat off, adds to the feeling that he has been down there a while and that it is frustrating work. I guess this in itself is amusing, Mario being a ‘superhero’ of sorts. Having taken his overalls off the shoulder set up an opportunity to show off a bit of butt crack – the trademark of any good tradesman. |

Some kind of saga.. Pt.I
Mario and Luigi have been around for a very long time, and they’ve become ingrained into modern society in a way. They’re very recognizable, they’ve appeared in tons of games, and they haven’t changed too much in over two decades. For most of us, Mario and Luigi represent a very pleasant part of childhood, and most Mario fan art reflects that. But then there are some artists who decide to go an entirely different direction with their homages to the arcade machine heroes.
http://i48.tinypic.com/2hg8fmo.jpg "Turnip Murder", illustrated by Winona Nelson Winona Nelson’s vision is equal parts odd and awesome. It’s strange to see familiar baddies cast in a slightly more realistic light, but the entire painting is gorgeous. An enterprising individual in Japan spent hours after school for a little over three weeks to do something very important: bring you this clip.
Using stop motion animation, Super Mario Bros. was recreated on the walls of this Japanese school. The total budget for this production? The equivalent of US$55. Money well spent. Mario Products: Super-Mario-Themed Soda Pop product description: Nothing is beter after a hard session of game playing then throwing back a cold drink. SO why not make that drink Mario related? These 4 fruity canned drinks, make by Shasta Cola company, each feature a Mario character on the can. You can choose from Mario Punch, Luigi Berry, Princess Toadstool Cherry (should have been Peach =) and Yoshi Apple (should have been Berry =). Each one is chocked full of vitamin C and tastes.. well fruity. These drinks, released shortly after SMW's release, didn't do too well in the US, but were a big hit in Japan. After a short production run, the sodas are no longer being made. If you find some in a collectibles store, it could be a nice little trinket to keep around, and may even be worth something. I wouldn't reccomend drinking it though (mmmm, 8 year old soda)-- courtesy of SMBHQ. |

author's comments (translated): [Everything was] created by my girlfriend Judith for her apartment. We both love video games, especially Super Mario. She’s currently studying Mechanical Engineering in Germany and has also built an incredible lightsaber for my birthday. She’s a hardcore Super Mario Land (Game Boy) gamer and we both are fans of the whole franchise. I designed the shelf for our growing collection of videogames (almost 200 Wii games) and I thought the boxes would be perfect with the backround [of hills] and a cloud (all made of wood). Beside the shelf was a small table for the phone and the Internet and I thought it would be cool if we could have a warp pipe too. So she’s created the warp pipe based on a garbage can [that] big enough to hide all the cables. We’ve bought the figures and the mushroom to make it perfect. I designed the Game Boy clock [to include] the Super Mario Land scene with objects as numbers, because it is her favorite game … It works very well with the wall color and it’s not too colorful … Currently she’s working on a small Koopa shell (the same size as the mushroom) for the shelf. So I’m just the guy with the ideas and she’s my Super Judith! ;o) [gadgetsteria.] |

Do I need ask such questions as "who is your favorite character?" or "what underrated Mario game would you recommend most?" in order to allow for a spark of discussion / conversational piece to come rushing back in here?
It is weird that I provide so much impetus, yet nothing ever becomes of it, because I refuse to ask cliched questions as "is this hot, or not?", 'cause I believe my audience smart enough to gather their own ideas about what they come to see. - - - - - onto the content: Here's a few Mario Kart-inspired stop motion videos I've come across that seem particularly noteworthy. I guess I can't buy a comment or discussion point anymore, no matter how hard I try; (I don't know how to quit).
What is a surprise Mario franchise game that you bought, received and/or sampled, and were completely blown away by how enjoyable it was? My take: Mario Tennis (N64) was one of the first Mario sporting video game ventures, yet its simple formula was wildly entertaining, especially when you invited your friends over to play. The learning curve was not steep at all, and is a suitable game for really, all ages. I'm still regretting pawning my N64, if only because I think this game's replayability factor is timeless. Your take? |

One sentence comments, by all means are welcome, because, as I repeat all too often, I never get more than three a month from any one person, anywhere, but please, if you do enjoy the topic, add a little diversification / commentation (complimentation is also nice) to it. For starters: If you have means of a portable gaming device, (Game Boy, NDS, that bulky e-Reader card-affixture for the GBA, Game & Watch, whatever) would you mind sharing what is your optimal / #1 choice of the vast array and selection of Mario titles, which game, above all others, is your choice, and why? |
Oh we can have a real conversation here too? Excellent.
A: SMB3. Imho it was the best of the mario series and they really need to send someone back to play it again and learn from it. It would go well on the DS family and really give people frustrated by NSMB's awkward "gotcha" moments, "close enough" physics, and gimmicks something to enjoy. |
Sorry about that. I didn't mean to make it look as though I was talking solely to you, (you replied before I saw your comment about the Mario Wedding Proposal above) but it is still a (friendly) reminder to the subscribers of this theme to note that commentary and free thought exchange are just as welcome here as my Artist Features. I'd ideally like to get this place hopping like it was on the first page, but then others started falling off, and so, too, did I.
- - - Shadowex3: Are proposing someone at Nintendo (of America) reconfigure the original SMB3 game (1990-1991) so that is made to be enjoyed portable? I might be botching the numeral assignment, but I'm pretty sure they already did so in 2001-2003, with Super Mario Advance 3 (for the GBA system). Maybe you'd like the designers to import the game engine from that title, but amek it into a brand-new playable game for the DS - how does that sound? |
Working with the engine probably wouldn't work, although duplicating the physics would be great. What I meant was more for them to draw inspiration from what made the old game great and challenging but still fun and enjoyable. NSMB imho was drawing its difficulty from arbitrary "close enough" moments, off physics, and cheap shots rather than legitimate difficulty like SMB3.
