Classic game list
I'd like to compile a list of some of the best classics, be they rpg, action rpg, adventure, ect.
Zelda (The adventures of link, A link to the past, Orcrana of Time, Majora's Mask) Suikoden 1 & 2 Xenogears Final Fantasy (7,8,9) Brave Fencer Musashi Legend of Dragoon So a rough sketch of some really good games. I don't really like Final Fantasy VIII too much, but it was one of the first Ps1 final fantasy's I had ever played and thus will always have a special place in my list. But, I'd love to hear other peoples views on the subject. It's not limited to only RPG's though. Icarus

Ahhh back when Square actually released decent games on a normal schedule. Now we have the standard Final Fantasy every few years and the rest is crap.
Suikoden 1 and 2 are huge classics as well as the PS1 Final Fantasy's.

Final Fantasy 10 (PS2) - A more recent game but IMO, the best that has come out in its genre.
Zelda (Super Nintendo) - Couldn't get enough of this game. Road Rash 3 (Sega Gensis) - My brother and I played this for hours on end. |

And a link to the past will always be one of my favorite games. But then again, FF10 isn't a classic yet. :P The Ps1 system had some of the BEST RPGs on the market and it saddens me when kids think that graphics really make the game. Without those really bad graphics and amazing plot we wouldn't be able to call RPGs as such. We wouldn't have had titles like "Crisis Core" for PSP or even Final Fantasy Tactics. God, two of the best games I've ever played.

All 2d castlevania games are classic.
Lunar SSSC and Eternal Blue are still up there on my favorite games list. Wild Arms is an overlooked RPG imo. The sequels just didn't live up to the original imo. I think RPGs just stick with you like no other games. I pretty much forgot about gears of War 2 minutes after beating it. They're like paper plates. You use em and dump em. I payed 60 dollars for a used copy of Xenogears something like 9 years after it came out. Now that speaks of quality.

My list of classic rpgs.
As you can see, I was always about PC gaming. I did have access to NES and Sega Genesis, but they were mainly action games I played. I can't believe the number of hours I spent playing each of these. I'm all about the rpgs. Moraff's World (circa 1980) Dunzhin (1982) Ultima III: Exodus (1983) Phantasie (1985) The Bard's Tale (1985) Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar (1985) Pool of Radiance (1988) Dragon Wars (1989) Darksun: Shattered Lands (1993) Betrayal at Krondor (1993) MajorMUD (1994) [My first multiplayer experience] Baldur's Gate (1998) Neverwinter Nights (2002) [My second multiplayer experience] *links show screenshots

I would say the SNES had the best RPG's of any console. FFIV, FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Tales of Phantasia, Super Mario RPG, Breath of Fire 1 and 2, Illusion of Gaia, Tactics Ogre. I love those games! The SNES in my opinion was the heyday of console gaming. The Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past is an amazing game.
Was never a fan of the N64 but the original Playstation had some amazing games as well. Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy VII, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen, Star Ocean: Second Story, Lunar: Silver Star Story, Klonoa, Breath of Fire 3, Legend of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon, Vagrant Story, just to name a few. I'm a nostalgia whore.

If we're going for classics...
- Pool of Radiance - Eye of the Beholder series - Daggerfall - War of the Lance - Elite (not really strategy, but space exploration) - Panzer general - Steel panthers - Civilization series - Syndicate - Laser Squad - Dune 2000 ...but I don't like to look at screenshots. Especially the older games were *really* ugly when compared to games these days. But at the time, it was state of the art. |
