Rock Band / Guitar Hero. Which camp are you in?
So it seems a lot of the newer band games all support the functionality of playing online with friends, I spent a good 3 hours or so last night playing GH:WT with a friend down in Fresno, CA right from my living room
The different consoles all use different matchmaking services so xboxers can't play with PS3, and Wii owners. Sucks but thats how it is for now. I'm ShaukDotDj on PSN so if you need someone to play guitar, add me Last edited by Shauk; 09-15-2009 at 01:58 PM.. |

How about each franchise on either platform?
I prefer Rock Band. I don't care what system it's on.

I had GH2 for the xbox before the Harmonix split from Activision. So I stuck with the Xbox versions because I already had the hardware, plus, there seems to be better support for the guitars (regardless of which game they officially belong to) on the Xbox. I personally have an affinity for the RB series although I play both. RB is still developed by the original developer of GH so I guess I sort of followed and supported the developer more so then the actual game franchise.
I have arguments for both tho: RB is a little more innovative, but I do wish they would add a 5th drum pad like GHWT did. GH is a little more challenging (i.e. more notes and more complicated patterns), but the timing seems to be more precise on the RB side. RB, while not having as many notes, requires more precision and better timing I find. I haven't picked up GH5 yet, I've been bouncing back and forth regarding getting the full package for a new drum set or just the game and using my VERY beat up GHWT set. I'm also a tiny bit disappointed by the setlist on GH5, except the Arctic Monkeys and Blur song. The Beatles Rock Band is great though, I just wish I could import the songs like i could between RB 1 and 2 for an uber list of tracks. |

I play it on the 360 at home, cause its the system I have I play it on the PS3 at everyone else's place, cause its what they have. No difference between the games, or instruments. Its all the same to me. |

I have a harder time with the Guitar Hero guitars... harder to slide between keys I think.

I don't have either yet. We played RB at a friend's house, and my son (7 years this week) wants it really badly. Looks like it'll be a Christmas gift (for Wii). I'm looking at LEGO: Rock Band, to cut down on the songs with questionable lyrics. There's also Band Hero, which is also supposed to be more family-friendly, but so far the RB version seems to be a better track list.

We joined the Guitar Hero camp a long time ago. We only ever buy on the PS3, since Playstation was the platform we got World Tour on. I can't see buying an entire new band kit for another game, even if it does have better and more DLC...
I really, really, really want to play some Beatles songs though...

Guitar Hero - PS2
Guitar Hero 2 - 360 Guitar Hero 3 - 360 Rock Band - 360 I'm torn now between GH4 and RB2 on the 360. Up until the drums addition, GH had it. And then GH4 came out with drums, and I was going to get that, and then RB2 caught my eye.. sigh.

GH4 (smash hits) has gotten poor reviews - clearly they're just milking the franchise, since all of those tracks could have been DLC for GHWT. GH5 is worth the wait, I reckon, for the additional features and fresh cuts.

yeah the "smash hits" thing is a bit of a pickle, mainly cuz they're pulling them from the games they made primarily for the ps2, the problem is even if you have a backwards compatible ps3, your old GH controllers wouldn't work cuz there aren't any plugs for them on the ps3. I agree it would have made a decent DLC thing
kind of a pain in the sack but meh. on a side note, kinda surprised to see such an even spread on the poll. |

Guitar Hero 4 isn't Smash Hits, it's World Tour. Smash Hits is another game entirely. It's pretty much just a "best of", and it isn't terrible, just not at all anything new. But GH 5 is really worth the money. The graphics have improved, the freeplay is a lot of fun, and being able to have a band of 4 guitarists, bass players, drummers, whatever (or any combination of those) is pretty cool. Plus, right now you can import some songs from World Tour, and supposedly you'll be able to get the rest and Smash Hits sometime in the future. Right now my songlist on GH5 is 163 songs long. Worth it in my book anyway...

We've played both GH and RB on a 360. They are both fun and entertaining; however, after a few times playing RB, we found it too time-consuming or cumbersome to set up the drums and the mike. So basically, we ended up with just another version of GH that we paid more for and didn't use completely.
Also, if you live in a small place, the drum set gets in the way. You can disassemble it, but I think you'd be even less inclined to set it back up if you did. |

I've only ever really played GH (I have 3, WT, Metallica, 5, and Van Halen should be in the mail soon). I've played a little Rock Band at Best Buy, but I like the way the note charts look better in GH (much clearer and easier to read)

well, cleared the 1st one on hard last night (just bought it for 18.99 out of the bargain bin, lol) might have to splurge on RB2 soon. not sure if i'm sold on gh5 yet. I keep feeling like I got kicked in the balls when songlist crossovers happen. Word Tour has a lot of rock band songs. it's sad. |
