Mouse test

Me and a friend are having a discussion at work about mouse acceleration and its usefulness in gaming. Some people have it off, some people have it on. If you have a gaming mouse with software installed for it, chances are you have acceleration off. Mouse acceleration is on by default in Windows.

Take this test on level 1. Do it about 10 times and post your best time, and whether or not you have mouse acceleration on or off.

.:: GameWeex ::. Mouse Click Test - Free Online Flash Games

So far my best is approximately 10.86 using a Dell ball mouse (which in my opinion is the best type of mouse for gaming).

The reason this is so interesting to me is due to its effects on how good I am at games. When I had mouse acceleration on, I was really good at sniper in TF2, and I used to be a raging death machine in COD4. When I turned it off when I bought my Logitech MX518, I started sucking at sniper and at COD4, but I got better at Heavy and Pyro in TF2, particularly with tracing targets. But anything involving sniping or precision I simply sucked at.

I got down to about 13.4 seconds with acceleration on. Accuracy is my problem. I had a few really good runs only to blow it and lose 3-4 seconds on a set because I missed the bubble.

I turned it off and tried again but never got under 14 seconds but I think that was because my finger was crampin up on me.

11.71 with mouse acceleration turned on. Wired optical mouse from Microsoft.

Never got below 12 seconds with acceleration turned off. Kept overshooting the targets. I play with acceleration turned on though so it's not a fair assessment - I'm naturally better at the game with acceleration turned on as a result.

I had mouse acceleration off for almost a year with my Logitech MX518. I recently unplugged it and went back to my Dell ball mouse with acceleration on. I was tired of sucking at every PC game except TF2. I'm not all the way used to the new settings...I wonder how fast I could do it if I never switched to different settings in the first place!!

9.42 @100% accuracy

The general consensus of the 'professional' fps players is that mouse acceleration is horrible. The reason is that the crosshair will always move a different distance depending how fast you move the mouse between point a and b even if the distance is always the same.

Believe me just because you turn of mouse acceleration on hardware/software drivers and in windows does not mean it is gone. The way to test it is to turn your sensitivity WAY down in game. Shoot a couple bullets to make a mark in the wall and flick your mouse all the way across your mousepad like you were making a 180 flick shot. Then you want to SLOWLY move it back to where the mouse started at. If it doesn't end up in the exact same spot you have mouse acceleration somewhere on your system.

GotFrag eSports - Files - CPL Mouse Fix

This turns off all acceleration through the registry in windows xp.

Yeah I know all about mouse acceleration, my point is that I think some players benefit from it. I suck in every FPS I play (except TF2) with it off, and that's with using a $70 Logitech MX518 gaming mouse with 1800 DPI.

For example, possibly the BEST sniper in all of TF2 leagues is Bloodsire, and he swears that acceleration ON is better. I guess it's down to personal preference. Once you get used to acceleration on, there are no surprises. You move the mouse fast to do a 180, you move it slow to nail a headshot. It really does make sense if you think about it.

The counter argument is that players aren't in control of the mouse movement because it's done by how fast you move the mouse, not where you move it. But what if you mastered the speed in which you move the mouse?

BTW what's your results and settings?

I also have a MX518. Love the damn thing. I had no idea about mouse acceleration, and have no idea if it's on or off. I don't have the logitech software installed so I think it should be off, right?
Either way I haven't been playing too many skill based FPS lately, but I'll try samcol's way of knowing whether it's there or not.

Actually it's probably still on if you don't have the software installed. Go to control panel, mouse, pointer options, and see if Enhance POinter Precision is on. If it's checked, then you have mouse acceleration on. If it's unchecked then it's off.

Also, move your mouse quickly to a spot on the screen, then go back to where you were. Then move it slowly there. Do you have to move the mouse more to get it there? If so, then it's on.

The Mouse Click test is a more involved test, but it you want to test your mouse control and if your sensitivity is set to a good setting for you personally, try Cursor Invisible. You have to hit the targets with no mouse cursor visible, and are only able to see where you hit last. BTW, my high score is ~13s average with accel for Mouse Click Test and 446 for Cursor Invisible.
