Second Skin (must watch for MMO players)
Code:
http://www.hulu.com/watch/87648/second-skin This is going to be up until the 13th, so you've got 2 days to watch it. I know a lot of you play MMO's so I figured I'd share it if you guys haven't caught this yet. I particularly like the view of the guy who thinks that MMO's are kind of society's mirror. 50 million people play MMO's 50 million people don't like what they see in society. We're raised with fear in the media, to think our neighbors might be weird or dangerous, is inherently antisocial. MMO players log in and all of that social expectation dissolves, it's true "equality" the segment on the people with disabilities was pretty nice too. I think it was very well done. Was it me or did the Dan Bustard guy seem like he was trying (and badly) to act?
I thought the whole thing was well done except his parts. They just felt phony to me.

I liked how they had perfectly normal people that met through playing online games, attractive males and females and they weren't living in a trailer park, weren't playing so much that their dog died from starvation, weren't 900 pounds, were altogether seemingly normal people, but they had to show the "train-wrecks" just to justify their documentary.

I tried watching it. I couldn't really get into it. I'm just tired of the whole MMOs introduced me to my Husband/Wife bullshit. You can meet people anywhere. To actually meet someone in an environment that actually puts you in contact with people of the opposite sex AND gives you something to talk about, of course a normal person could meet their mate in a situation like that.
My only problem with MMOs is that as you progress, the more you have to commit yourself to playing on your group's schedule.

I watched about half of it, but wasn't feeling compelled to finish watching it. As someone who met his wife playing WoW, seeing other people who met playing isn't hugely fascinating to me. I lived it, I don't really care horribly about seeing how other people had it happen (especially when their stories are, on the whole, creepier than my own).
I mostly got totally distracted looking up that Syndicate guild and boy are those guys a bunch of crazy wankers. Their guild rules specifically state that you're not allowed to be a member of ANY other guild on ANY other server because they demand 100% loyalty from their members. If you ever leave for any reason, you're banned for life (excepting "extreme" circumstances). I like my guild and all and I'm an officer and I think it's cool to have a group of folk I like to hang out with, but holy shit. That's a level of commitment in a game that's way off the charts. |

lol, i find that hilarious cuz there is no way they could possibly enforce that rule. I guarantee someone is "cheating" on the guild by playing alts or something on another server. With name changes and such, I'm sure it's easy to go through with that and apply on a clean slate as well.
