Interesting Microsoft Achievements (Xbox or Windows)

I thought it'd be nifty to note some of the more interesting achievements available in games on the Microsoft platforms, either due to names or action. My first entries are both from Gears of War:

The Nuge - admittedly inspired by Ted Nugent (noted in the manual), this one requires you to kill 100 people with the crossbow in multiplayer games. Man, Ted is everywhere these days.

Is It A Spider? - one for sticking 100 people in multiplayer games with the grenade. I can only assume that it was inspired by Red vs. Blue when the unwitting guy (I honestly can't recall who it was right now) was stuck by Tex with a plasma grenade and asks, "Is it a spider?"

Dead Rising has some good Achievements.
Zombie Genocide - Kill 53,594 Zombies (That happens to be the population of the town)
Zombie Road - Walk 33 feet on the backs on zombies.
Strike! - Knocked down at least 10 zombies with a bowling ball

Microsoft is a money-vampire.

DirectX 10 is a big leap in computer gaming graphics. MS decided DirectX 10 exclusive to Vista - not for any technical reason ... but to FORCE people (like myself) to buy crappy Vista! They pull shit like this all the time.

I don't think they really "innovate" worth shit. It seems that, if you're a monopoly, everything is considered an "innovation" no matter how poorly coded or carelessly executed the product is.

Microsoft sucks.

.... I'm sorry. Was this about 360 "gaming achievements"? Never mind.

longbough, from a recovered Microsoft hater, I have to rebut your points. First of all, DX10 is, in and of itself, an achievement on MS' behalf. Whether you agree with the required Vista packaging (though that's not wholly the case) or not, you just let that one up on your own. Also, what is so crappy about Vista? I'm a gamer and a geek and happily run Vista on my PC. It runs great. Games run great. My apps run great. I'm even using 64-bit Vista, which by most detractors accounts should compound the problem when, in fact, it only makes the product better.

They aren't FORCING you to buy anything. First of all, DX10 has been successfully setup on XP machines now for a little while. Halo 2, the only game I know that REQUIRES DX10 sucks on the PC anyhow. Get an Xbox 360. *shrug* While MS does make some truly crappy stuff (such as the Zune... a plague upon the MP3 players of the world). However, MS has been able to pull off a monopoly for a reason. They weren't the only product. They often weren't the BEST product, but they obviously did something right.

64-bit Windows versions push the envelope of what an OS can offer at it's core (as with other 64-bit platforms), Vista offers superb visuals, which appeal to geeks and non-geeks alike. Vista Ultimate offers one of the most stable Media Center apps available. While I love MythTV, it's still in it's "more features, less beauty" phase of development. Perhaps that will change with time. Office is the most used suite in the world, and despite the push for linux and openoffice, MS Office still reigns supreme. In fact several companies that switched have switched back to the MS platform. The 360 is arguably the best console to date (sorry Sony loyalists). What more do you really want? An OS that never crashes? MacOS X and *nix systems crash sometimes too, albeit with not as much frequency, but also without as much support for a vast array of hardware and software. *shrug*

I learned long ago that my MS hatred was misplaced.

"Shadowrun Fever"

It's an STD 'achievement' in Shadowrun that you get for teabagging (squatting up and down on someone's face) someone who already has the fever.

Initially it was only the developers who had the fever, but they were teabagged and then those people were teabagged until it spread all across Shadowrun. Nowadays, you can teabag just about anyone and get the Fever. 25 Gamerscore!

Also in Gears of War, one that I liked the best that you missed:

There's an achievement called Series of Tubes I believe, host 50 multiplayer matches. I think it's based on the idiot who called the Internet a series of tubes:

The "Irony" achievement in BioShock you get when you...

Spoiler: Take a picture of Sander Cohen's corpse.

Also, one that made me chuckle because I had just recently watched Clerks was the Gears achievement "My Love for You is Like a Truck."

I think some of you are confused about what the OP meant by "achievements".

Some of the Halo 3 achievements are interesting if only because they're so damn hard or require some outrageous confluence of events. They wouldn't be so bad except you have to do these ones in ranked FFA which has 5 players max.

Two for One: Kill 2 people with one Spartan Laser blast. For those who haven't played Halo 3, the Spartan Laser is a huge well... laser that takes a few seconds to charge up so to kill two people they need to be right next to each other or in a line. Very tough.

Mongoose Mowdown: The mongoose is basically a small ATV making it easy to dodge or jump over plus to actually kill someone you have to be going full speed. I spent a whole match just driving around on a mongoose to get it and got lucky.

Overkill: Get 4 kills within 4 seconds. Sounds easy right? Maybe in a 10 player game but in FFA killing 4 people means killing EVERY OTHER PLAYER in the game. Really only possible in oddball or king of the hill unless you get super lucky in a slayer match.

Steppin' Razor: Get a triple kill with the sword. Yep, once again kill the majority of the players in the game, at melee range no less.

Maybe Next Time, Buddy: I like this one, after having your vehicle jacked, you have to jack it again within 10 seconds.

Soltrio Solitaire has another funny one...."The Mingler".....0 gamerpoints. All you do is go into a multiplayer game and quit before the end.....

Irritating to say the least unless you're "boosting."

That being said, I've got both the Mongoose Mowdown, Maybe Next Time Buddy and have come very close to some of the others (all without arranging things in the pre-game lobby).

Steppin' Razor is going to be a bitch because I suck with the sword; I just get all excited...

I'm sorry if this is too indirect (wait for the pun...), but it is related to Direct3D 10. I'd like to say it wouldn't make me get Windows Vista on its own, but I might be wrong. For those who are fans of Far Cry, the CryENGINE has been updated to CryENGINE 2 and is built on the Direct3D 10 under Vista. With the new engine, they have built Crysis.

If you haven't yet checked out the videos, my god, do so now. For you Xboxers out there, cross your fingers and hope for cross-platformation.

Now more about the OP: I think the more advanced games get in terms of what you can do in them, the more "achievements" will be possible. Area damage is a big deal now. Imagine what you can do with that.

Is I wrong that I got all of them except Razor in my first day playing (without pre-arranging them)?

Short answer: Yes. Extremely.

Slightly less short answer: Come play with me and laser people using my GamerTag.

Yeah, I still have to get the damned audio diaries from BioShock, along with the Irony achievement and the jackpot on the slot machine. Almost there...

Speaking of Bioshock...

The new achievement is titled "Brass Balls," which I thought was funny as it reminded me of that horrible scene with Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross.
You have to complete the game on hard without the use of Vita-Chambers and is worth a whopping 100 gs points.

There's a game out there I read gives you all 1000 points in two minutes if you just keep pressing the B button.

If I recall it's based off the Nickelodeon show Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The Achievements (only 5) consist of just getting combos. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. Which there is a video out there showing how to do it on the first level.
