longbough, from a recovered Microsoft hater, I have to rebut your points. First of all, DX10 is, in and of itself, an achievement on MS' behalf. Whether you agree with the required Vista packaging (though that's not wholly the case) or not, you just let that one up on your own. Also, what is so crappy about Vista? I'm a gamer and a geek and happily run Vista on my PC. It runs great. Games run great. My apps run great. I'm even using 64-bit Vista, which by most detractors accounts should compound the problem when, in fact, it only makes the product better.
They aren't FORCING you to buy anything. First of all, DX10 has been successfully setup on XP machines now for a little while. Halo 2, the only game I know that REQUIRES DX10 sucks on the PC anyhow. Get an Xbox 360. *shrug* While MS does make some truly crappy stuff (such as the Zune... a plague upon the MP3 players of the world). However, MS has been able to pull off a monopoly for a reason. They weren't the only product. They often weren't the BEST product, but they obviously did something right.
64-bit Windows versions push the envelope of what an OS can offer at it's core (as with other 64-bit platforms), Vista offers superb visuals, which appeal to geeks and non-geeks alike. Vista Ultimate offers one of the most stable Media Center apps available. While I love MythTV, it's still in it's "more features, less beauty" phase of development. Perhaps that will change with time. Office is the most used suite in the world, and despite the push for linux and openoffice, MS Office still reigns supreme. In fact several companies that switched have switched back to the MS platform. The 360 is arguably the best console to date (sorry Sony loyalists). What more do you really want? An OS that never crashes? MacOS X and *nix systems crash sometimes too, albeit with not as much frequency, but also without as much support for a vast array of hardware and software. *shrug*
I learned long ago that my MS hatred was misplaced.
