Space Flight Sim?

I was a big fan of Colony Wars back in the day, but the graphics really haven't aged well. Do any of you know of any game for any of the consoles that's fairly recent (made in the last few years) that could be called similar to Colony Wars.

I've been playing Rogue Leader lately, but I'm getting tired of the "Star Wars themed" game.

Any recommendations?

unless i'm totally forgetting something, there really isn't anything out there. The space combat genre seemed to really be taking off way back in the day with the Wing Commander/Privateer series, but they got stale fast and there hasn't been much since (not counting Star Wars stuff). There have been a couple of homebrew efforts but they've usually focused too much on realism (hint: Realism in spaceflight sims is a BAD thing because having to wait 12 years to get to the nearest star at the speed of light makes for a boring game) and their graphics have been no better than you'd get on an old IIgs.

Now if you're willing to go a lot more oldschool and can find it, Space Rogue by Orion was one of the best spaceflight combat sims (with a bit of RPG mixed in) I've ever played, even though it was released way back in 1989.

Battlestar Galactica was released for the PS2 in 2003. I've heard decent things about it but not enough to make it a "must have" game. Check for a few online reviews before you go dumpster diving for it, I'm not sure if that's exactly the genre your looking for.

Crazy

if you're into MMO's the space flight in Star Wars Galaxies is decent. Though it is a Star Wars game, and I haven't played many space sim games to compare it with.

Console wise, you're stuck. Sorry. Get Rebel Strike and ignore the foot missions and horrible bugs. Star Fox might sate your appetite somewhat.

PC wise, you have much more choice;
X2, Soon-to-be X3, Homeworld 1 & 2, Freespace, EVE Online, Escape Velocity (go play this, now!), open source Wing Commander, and so forth.

I have always loved star fox for N64. one of my top 5 games of all time i think. I hear the gamecube one wasnt so hot due to so many foot missions. In the one for hte 64 tho you mostly fly witht he exception of maybe 2 levels. 1 level you get a neat tank taht can hover and the other you get a submarine with infinite homing torpedos as well as the laser guns.

Every level is a giant clusterfuck and its all non-stop action. you can blow through the entire game real quick but the replay value on it is great. there's a few different "paths" you can take throughout the game each path having compltely different types of levels (you only really beat it if you can get to the hard path) and there's even a hidden level where you fight a giant slot machine. its neat.

Thanks for your replies

I've played Star Fox 64 to death. I loved it, but I just can't go back to it now. I bought Rebel Strike on release and sold it a week later. The foot missions were Robotron. It drove me nuts. All of a sudden, with that and Star Fox, it's important to use ground vehicles and your feet in a flight sim. Why!?!?!

Galactica was slow. I really loved the new series, and thought I'd pick this up to learn a bit about the old one. Lets just say I wasn't a fan of that game...

I know the PC has a few more titles than the console. It's always been that way with this genre. PC's had joysticks and all those buttons, but consoles do too now. Like the 2D scrolling shooter, this is a dying genre. It's a real shame they don't sell without X-Wings and whatnot.

Problem is, I'm a Mac user. I don't really want games on my Mac either. It's for work... and surfing the intarweb...

So I was really hoping someone would know of... like, a sequel to Colony Wars on PS2 under a different name, or Ace Combat: IN SPACE!. Unfortunately, it seems none of that exists.

Edit: I do have an old PC, and tried the open source Wing Commander. I like Colony Wars better, but my problem with PC games is that one day, like most of the ones I've tried on a recent retro kick, they just don't work anymore. It's relieving to know that when I buy for a console, it's always gonna run on that console.

I wonder if you could get x-wing vs tie fighter to play on a mac. I thought that game kicked major ass back in the day. Its very old now and the graphics probably suck. but the game was great.

Yea, i think the last time i tried to play it i found that it wasnt compatible with the latest directx and kept claiming i didnt have directx on my system. i dunno if mac uses directx tho so it may not have that problem. There was a similar game that came out a few years later.. i just cant remember the name of the damn thing. not as fun as xwing vs tie fighter, but almost. Prettymuch exactly the same game except slighty better graphics (and im not talking about the expansion(s) for xwing vs tie fighter)

If there was a Mac version, I would need a patch from LucasArts to get it to run on OSX.

Otherwise, it just wouldn't install.

Edit: LucasArts does not offer this.
