D&D Online
Is there anybody out there thinking about trying the D&D Online MMO coming out at the end of the month?
Is anyone in the beta? (Don't say anything to break NDA) I have to admit that I have a guilty curiosity. I played AD&D in high school and college.

I'm looking forward to it. Other than Guild Wars, I haven't found one MMORPG that could keep my interest. Even Matrix Online, which I had high hopes for, missed the mark by a mile.
It can't be any worse then some of the persistant worlds in Neverwinter Nights, and I played that religiously for quite a while. |

I might be willing to check it out... if I can find the time. My friend and I used to play AD&D in high school and have talked about trying to get a game together again... finding a DM is always the stubbling block (beisdes the fact that he now lives almost 2 hours away).

I couldn't find mention of what the monthly fee would be...
I just checked out www.ddo.com. The game looks like it is going to be very cool. You will have the opportunity to do large style campaigns like WoW while as doing more intimate D&D style campaigns where you don't have to worry about idiots not of your party interfering... sounds great.

When I read about it awhile ago in PC Gamer, they were still considering doing an expansion pack system like Guild Wars, instead of the monthly fee. Not that I've looked too hard since then, but I haven't seen anything saying they finalized it one way or the other.

Sounds wonderful and I'd love to play the game, but the monthly fee is the reason I'm steering clear. I just quit FFXI recently and I don't want to start another monthly fee game right now

Subscription fees don't really bother me. The company is providing a source of entertainment that I find exceeds what I get out of your average premium movie channel. I am happy to shell out around $15 a month for it as long as the game continues to entertain.

I tryed this game out at E3 last May. I only had a few minutes, but I have no complaints. The fun part was that the cleric I played had plenty of spell points. Sure, my hero could have taken out the band of skeletons with his trusty mace, but Flame Strike was set to F4. BLAST! And they promptly died (again). And there were enough SP to cast that spell at least 8 more times! It's something to look forward to.

Resting must be done are specific Rest points within a dungeon map, or at a tavern outside of a dungeon. In a dungeon a rest point can only be used once.

By dungeon do you mean any map? What if youre outside far away from an inn? I'm a little confused as to how this world is put together. Is it a constant world, like WoW, EQ, DAoC, etc.? Or do you join up on smaller servers to play specific maps? Like NWN? I'm guessing its constant by the fact you have to pay per month, but if that's the case, there must be A LOT of inns all over the world.
So for the inns, can you rest an unlimited amount of times? |

From what I can see it seems that it is not a constant world, rather it is campaign based just like D&D would be in real life.

I wish I could play every week. My group only gets together once a month, and we usually end up getting too drunk to actually get anywhere in the campaign. Back in Junior High and High School though, we use to play pretty often, and had a great time. So the nostalgia factor probably adds quite a bit to my anticipation of the game.

a bit of info for you all - I've been playing the beta since OCtober. It's a great game, even for someone like me who doesn't get very much (if any) playtime in. As far as I know, it will be $15 a month.
HOWEVER, this is done by Turbine, so that $15 is not going to waste. Unlike all the other companies, you get most of your content on a monthly basis in Turbine games. Take Asheron's Call - there's been 6 Years worth of monthly patches (Save near the end when they tried to make their second expansion pack they had a 5 month gap of no updates) in which a LOT of content was added. The devs have stated that the patch I was playing on at the end of beta was the retail version, or close to it. All other dev time spent since then (this was early feb, the 2nd maybe when they finalized the last patch) has been spent on new content. It is very definately campaign based, but it is in no means static. |
