D&D Online

Is there anybody out there thinking about trying the D&D Online MMO coming out at the end of the month?
Is anyone in the beta? (Don't say anything to break NDA)
I have to admit that I have a guilty curiosity.
I played AD&D in high school and college.

I'm looking forward to it. Other than Guild Wars, I haven't found one MMORPG that could keep my interest. Even Matrix Online, which I had high hopes for, missed the mark by a mile.

It can't be any worse then some of the persistant worlds in Neverwinter Nights, and I played that religiously for quite a while.

I might be willing to check it out... if I can find the time. My friend and I used to play AD&D in high school and have talked about trying to get a game together again... finding a DM is always the stubbling block (beisdes the fact that he now lives almost 2 hours away).

I reeaally want to play this game, but I cannot justify paying the monthly fee. Too bad.

I couldn't find mention of what the monthly fee would be...

I just checked out www.ddo.com. The game looks like it is going to be very cool. You will have the opportunity to do large style campaigns like WoW while as doing more intimate D&D style campaigns where you don't have to worry about idiots not of your party interfering... sounds great.

When I read about it awhile ago in PC Gamer, they were still considering doing an expansion pack system like Guild Wars, instead of the monthly fee. Not that I've looked too hard since then, but I haven't seen anything saying they finalized it one way or the other.

Monthly Fee
There will be a monthly subscription fee. The exact amount of the subscription fee has not yet been determined.

Rules
The Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 rules are the basis of nearly all of our game mechanics.

XP
Experience in DDO is earned by completing quests, not by killing monsters. As long as the quest goals are completed, they don’t really care how many enemies you kill along the way. This system gives us flexibility in deciding whether or not combat is required in a given situation -– some encounters might make combat unavoidable, while others can be circumvented by an appropriately sneaky and/or silver-tongued party.

Level Limit
Characters will be limited to level 10 in the initial release, divided among four ranks per level. This will provide over 40 moments of advancement.

Ranks
Ranks can be considered milestones that are achieved within the D&D level system. Between the progression from one level to the next characters will achieve ranks, which give the ability to buy special enhancements for their characters.

Travel Time
There will be instantaneous travel to the dungeons. There are places to explore, but only when it's part of the adventure...so they have landscape adventures that require some exploration, but even then there is a quest driving the exploration...also many dungeons and landscapes have optional objectives and treasure that rewards the explorer
Generally, we want exploration to be a part of the fun that we've designed for the adventure, not a random experience that too frequently ends up with people getting lost.

Loot System
In order to present fair opportunities for each player, each character in DDO can open a chest and get their own loot out of it. In other words, the treasure system generates items and coins for each player that opens the chest. You probably -- almost unquestionably -- wont get the same loot, but you all had a fair chance to get good stuff. Of course after
you get the goods, players are free to trade with one another.

Items Degrade
Items degrade when you die. They stop working after they lose all of their durability (hit points) but they can be repaired many times. Eventually, over a long period, items will degrade entirely and need to be replaced.

Death
When you die in the dungeon, you have a few options: one, you get yourself raised by a cleric in your party, and you return to the fight more or less immediately. Two, you can wait until your party finds a place in the dungeon, set by the dungeon level designers, that allows characters to return to life even though they may not have a cleric
Or, you can bid a sad farewell to your companions and leave the dungeon, returning to life back in the city, typically at a place such as a temple or Jorasco healing house, etc.

Death Penalty
Just how you get resurrected will govern how much XP penalty you suffer from... though that will never be even close to the full level loss you suffer in D&D.

Hit Point Regeneration
In dungeon and landscape adventures, characters do *not* regenerate on their own -- they either have to get healed, use potions, scrolls, etc. or use Rest Shrines (objects you can find in a dungeon that simulate some rest time)
However, once you go back to Stormreach, you do have an opportunity to regenerate hit points and spell points -- taverns. Basically, you very slowly regen while in a tavern.
If you want to speed up that process you can purchase food and drink and consume it, speeding up your regen rates
However, there will be no *need* to purchase food, it's solely if you want to get out of the taverns faster.

Player Vs. Player
There will be no PvP at launch

Sounds wonderful and I'd love to play the game, but the monthly fee is the reason I'm steering clear. I just quit FFXI recently and I don't want to start another monthly fee game right now

Subscription fees don't really bother me. The company is providing a source of entertainment that I find exceeds what I get out of your average premium movie channel. I am happy to shell out around $15 a month for it as long as the game continues to entertain.

I tryed this game out at E3 last May. I only had a few minutes, but I have no complaints. The fun part was that the cleric I played had plenty of spell points. Sure, my hero could have taken out the band of skeletons with his trusty mace, but Flame Strike was set to F4. BLAST! And they promptly died (again). And there were enough SP to cast that spell at least 8 more times! It's something to look forward to.

How do you regain spells? I can't see how there could be an actual sleep system. Is it like NWN where you just sort of sit down? Does the screen black out?

Resting must be done are specific Rest points within a dungeon map, or at a tavern outside of a dungeon. In a dungeon a rest point can only be used once.

By dungeon do you mean any map? What if youre outside far away from an inn? I'm a little confused as to how this world is put together. Is it a constant world, like WoW, EQ, DAoC, etc.? Or do you join up on smaller servers to play specific maps? Like NWN? I'm guessing its constant by the fact you have to pay per month, but if that's the case, there must be A LOT of inns all over the world.

So for the inns, can you rest an unlimited amount of times?

From what I can see it seems that it is not a constant world, rather it is campaign based just like D&D would be in real life.

Oh cool I think then. I'd like to see different forms...but then how is it an MMORPG? I guess it isnt? If it isnt, how do they expect enough people to be willing to pay per month? I've never know anything that was successful in having you pay per month except MMORPGs and then it was because of the massive bandwidth issues...which I hear arn't even a problem for some anymore like WoW. Which makes me wonder where my money is now going to (when I play MMORPGs).

I wish I could play every week. My group only gets together once a month, and we usually end up getting too drunk to actually get anywhere in the campaign. Back in Junior High and High School though, we use to play pretty often, and had a great time. So the nostalgia factor probably adds quite a bit to my anticipation of the game.

a bit of info for you all - I've been playing the beta since OCtober. It's a great game, even for someone like me who doesn't get very much (if any) playtime in. As far as I know, it will be $15 a month.

HOWEVER, this is done by Turbine, so that $15 is not going to waste. Unlike all the other companies, you get most of your content on a monthly basis in Turbine games. Take Asheron's Call - there's been 6 Years worth of monthly patches (Save near the end when they tried to make their second expansion pack they had a 5 month gap of no updates) in which a LOT of content was added.

The devs have stated that the patch I was playing on at the end of beta was the retail version, or close to it. All other dev time spent since then (this was early feb, the 2nd maybe when they finalized the last patch) has been spent on new content.

It is very definately campaign based, but it is in no means static.
