got a donut today, went 1/2! oh sweet donut....mmmmmmm

Leto 03-04-2007 02:55 PM

0 / 3 as of today.

coffee time has a similar promotion going. prizes suck though (hot tub, Softron tax software, Days Inn in Vegas...)

godzilla23 03-04-2007 05:41 PM

3 / about 20. Two coffees, and a donut.

TV is pretty much fried... really, really want the plasma TV. Or the car. Yeah, the car. I looooove hybrids. At least that's what I'll say when I win one.

splck 03-04-2007 05:47 PM

0/8

Daval 03-04-2007 07:27 PM

i'm now about 1/14 - free coffee today. woot.

Sticky 03-07-2007 07:31 AM

Another dissapointment

Daval 03-07-2007 07:52 AM

I'm somewhere in the 1 for 20 range right now. Anyone seen the prize distribution list this year? does Ontario get screwed again?

Lucifer 03-07-2007 09:57 AM

Because I don't have a car this winter, I find myself drinking a whole lot less Tim's. Thankfully there is a Tim's outlet on campus, where just this morning I had my second Tims of this campaign and discovered that I am a whopping 0 for 2!

m0rpheus 03-12-2007 01:25 AM

Wooo! My first win of the year! A free coffee.

highthief 03-12-2007 08:12 AM

I got a free coffee! Whee!

Sticky 03-14-2007 06:11 AM

Another loss. I am 0 and I don't know how many

(added on3/15/2007)
And another

(added on3/16/2007)
Woohoo, the streak is finally broken.
So it is true, there are winning cups.
I won a free cup. I don't want anybody calling me for handouts now, you understand?

Leto 03-16-2007 06:59 AM

ding! Un Beigne!

that's 1/13.

note: poor Charlatan is missing all the fun....

Daval 03-16-2007 07:09 AM

I have won a total of 2 times out of at least 40 cups (2 cups per day every day, sometimes more on the weekends if I am buying coffee for the wife and hot chocolates for the kids). This has to be the worst year for wins I have ever had.

Charlatan 03-17-2007 04:14 PM

0/0 this year!

Sticky 03-23-2007 05:33 AM

A few more losses

Leto 03-23-2007 09:42 AM

ding ... 2 / 14 ( a coffee this time)

canuckguy 03-23-2007 03:44 PM

just an update....

2/19 so far, both wins were donuts....

my co-worker is a big fat 0/18.

Daval 03-26-2007 06:16 AM

this is by far my worst year for roll up the rim. Have they lowered the chances of winning by chance? I'm still only at 3 wins for like 60-70+ coffee's

highthief 03-26-2007 08:39 AM

I won another coffee! I'm so excited ...

m0rpheus 03-26-2007 09:38 AM

What a good weekend for me.

Friday evening I bought a coffee, and won a free coffee.
Used the free coffee Friday night and won another free coffee.
Used that Saturday morning and... won a free coffee.
Used that Saturday night and... yup won a free coffee. Still have the stub in my wallet to use today on the way to work

Leto 03-26-2007 01:22 PM

oh no! Wait 'till next year again???

I tried a bigger size...lost again

cdnjeepin 04-04-2007 06:10 AM

I am at like 0 for 30...i think they need to look at there odds...I think they are a tad wrong..supposed to be 1 in 9...yeah right...last year I never won anything either...

Leto 04-04-2007 12:32 PM

I'm now at 4 for about 20.

Bossnass 04-04-2007 02:51 PM

It isn't even funny anymore. I have gone the entirety of the last two years and this year without a single win. It is a 5+ per week habit, last year was more. People all around me are winning. I have to be approaching 0 for 200.

Leto 04-05-2007 09:35 AM

Last Friday, an employee of my company went across the street to the very same Tim's that I have spent the majority of my loose change at, and won a car.

This was at the Tim's on Victoria Park, just south of Sheppard in Toronto.

DesertDave 04-05-2007 07:48 PM

0 for 30 then won a coffee at 31 and a donut at 34. That's all I've won and tonight I was at 72 buys. That is a 1/36 odds pace, four times worse than the advertised 1/9 odds.

I know its a little late but I didn't see this thread before. You are all going to be mad. A girl in a couple of my petroleum classes won a car, yea thats right. She won one of the freakin cars.

Leto 05-01-2007 01:11 PM

I agree, maybe we should adopt an easily recognizable article of clothing. Something like a red or blue bandana may work... Or a lapel sticker that say's Hello, I'm on TFP.....

tenniels 05-10-2007 06:31 PM

I had seen on the news a little plastic contraption made specifically to roll up the rim on Timmy's coffee. I thought it was fantastically Canadian. And I know this is old, but I'm a new poster (although a long time reader). I love those things where you just shake your head and say, only in Canada.

Sticky 02-27-2008 10:05 AM

Alright, it is that time of year again.
I have not picked up my first yet.

Any of you rolled up and won this season?

tenniels, did you buy one of those plastic contraptions?

Charlatan 02-27-2008 04:41 PM

(sigh)

blahblah454 02-27-2008 06:05 PM

Was that a positive or negative sigh Charlatan? You just miss the timmys is that it?

I think this is the greatest "buy more coffee!" idea ever made. I don't even drink coffee and I want to buy one when tims has this on.

Sticky 02-27-2008 06:22 PM

it is not only the greatest buy more coffee idea, it is also the greatest come here instead of the other places idea.

Brilliant.

Charlatan 02-27-2008 10:00 PM

The sigh was because there is no Tim Horton's here...

On Sticky's comment... apparently Coffee Time has launched a similar roll up the rim campaign but has also said they will give a free coffee to anyone presenting them with a losing Tim Horton's cup.

At first I thought that was smart to...
...but I am not sure how smart it is.
What would a normal person do, pay for coffee at Tim's to get the roll up the rim. If they win, great. If they lose then they take the losing cup to Coffee Time and don't pay there. They keep going back to Tim's.

Also, CoffeeTime is just not as appealing as Tim's. I am not sure why.

I suppose they view it as a loss leader. If they come in and try the coffee maybe they will like it and come back.

The Coffee Time just south of Danforth on Broadview always had lousy coffee that sometimes tasted of floor cleaner. I agree with you that there is just something off about Coffee Time (not that I am a huge fan of Tim Horton's either).

Sticky 02-29-2008 06:12 AM

That is exactly it. There is just something off about Coffee Time.
I am not a big fan of Tim Horton's either, they just do this something better.
Also, I am not a huge fan of Starbucks but they do that same something even better. Fo some reason when I see a Starbucks cup, I just want the coffee - even though the coffee is just OK.

Charlatan 03-03-2008 05:15 PM

That's weird. I have the same urge when I see the Starbucks' cafe or logo. But then I remember how much I dislike their coffee.

Branding is a bitch.

Sticky 03-04-2008 11:54 AM

I have rolled up the rim and lost twice already this season.

thespian86 03-04-2008 12:02 PM

I have rolllllled four times and one once. My mother won a BBQ once. Since then my family has been plagued with a lack of Tim-fortune.

edit: Is anyone ever annoyed that when you roll up the rim it is nothing like it is on TV. I'm not stupid, I realize ads are ads, but at least at McD's you get a Big Mac that looks like the ad once in your life time. Mine never roll up perfectly cut with pictures illustrating my winnings. Damn you false advertising.

Leto 03-05-2008 04:20 AM

It's Country Style that will be honouring Tim's Try Agains during the week of March 9.

I've been stopping at the Country Style on the way to work, because of the smaller line up and the almost identical coffee. Their boston cream doughnuts taste a lot better too. But so far in the past 3 weeks, I've one free coffee or food about 50% of the time. The remainder of the rims have things like 10% off Mark's Work Wearhouse, or Liberty Tax etc. Not really winning at all.

Charlatan 03-05-2008 08:56 PM

Starbucks was giving out free large coffees between 10 and noon today. I admit... I went down and scooped a free coffee.

Sticky 03-06-2008 08:23 AM

Charlatan, only one?

Rolled and lost again.

Charlatan 03-06-2008 05:08 PM

yes... only one. The whole office went down, though so it added up to around 25 coffees total.

Sticky 03-07-2008 11:59 AM

Once or twice a year the office building I work in does that. They pay for complimentary coffees and muffins (from one of the coffee places in teh building) to everyone (alot of people) who works in the building.

Sticky 03-17-2008 07:41 AM

Lost a few more times.

I am about to roll up the rim and lose again.

Leto 03-18-2008 01:15 PM

rolled and lost today and yesterday.

Sticky 03-19-2008 06:00 AM

There has not been any real talk of winnings this season yet.

Charlatan 03-25-2008 05:44 PM

Still no rolling here... but I am having a very tasty cup of coffee.

Leto 03-25-2008 05:47 PM

no... just prior to the Timmy's rollup the rim, Country Style had their contest running. In the space of a couple of weeks I won 2 coffees, a 6 pack of mini doughnuts, a cookie and a doughnut.

Since the Timmy's contest started, I've only won a coffee.

Daval 03-26-2008 04:50 AM

About two weeks into it my grand total is two coffee's and one donut. Total bought probably about 20ish coffee's so thats actually not too bad, although all three wins have been with the last 5 coffee's.

I really want a Garmin! (well car would be awesome too but virtually no chance of winning that)

Sticky 03-27-2008 06:53 AM

I tried a different location and lost again.

Leto 04-02-2008 11:01 AM

bought a breakbast sandwich and cashed in my free coffee wining and... got a please play again.

Sandwhich hit the spot tho.

m0rpheus 04-02-2008 02:13 PM

I had a nice little run there. Five free coffees in a row. Then I won a cookie. I have won nothing after the cookie. Damn cookies :)

thespian86 04-03-2008 07:00 AM

I have one 1!! lousy coffee this year, and I buy maybe twice a day. Damn you tims.

Sticky 04-15-2008 10:48 AM

They ran out of roll up the rim cups at the closest Tim Horton's to work.
I still have not won.

Leto 04-21-2008 12:52 PM

goodbye for another what... year?

Incidentally, the "some" menu items that increased in price at Tim's included coffee. The little warning signs that they posted for the week prior to the increase made me think that the "some" menu items would be, you know, muffins, cookies, maybe fancy doughnuts.

But if they meant coffee too, why not just say all menu items???

So now, It costs $1.28 for a medium coffee (a five cent increase). So I say, off I go to Country Style, because their mediums (which taste identical) are probably still a buck and a quarter.

But nooooo.. $1.30 at Country Style. Also a nickle increase. Tell me there's no collusion.

Charlatan 04-21-2008 03:23 PM

Saw this story and thought it was relevant... Interesting that everyone seems to be winning less. Could Tim's have reduced the number of prizes?

Coffee junkies say it's a lean 'Roll Up the Rim' season

PATRICK WHITE

From Wednesday's Globe and Mail

April 16, 2008 at 2:25 AM EDT

'Tis the season of our national lament.

We gripe, we caterwaul, but as another cycle of one of our dearest national pastimes peters out, we resign ourselves to the age-old losers' chorus of “Maybe next year.”

Yes, another season of Tim Hortons' Roll Up the Rim to Win promotion is at an end, though the promotion's finale has not come without protest. Everywhere, double-double drinkers are grumbling about their lack of wins, all united by one cold, bilingual line: “Please Play Again/Réessayez s.v.p.” Bloggers, construction workers, even radio personalities have noted long slumps.

At a Tim Hortons in downtown Toronto yesterday, morning caffeine imbibers streamed out the doors with dispositions as bitter as their joe. “I can't believe it's over already,” said Trevor Walcott, a three-a-day coffee drinker clutching a burgundy cup rather than one of the bright-red contest cups in which he'd invested so much hope over the past two months. “I've won three free coffees the whole time. Last year, I won like seven or eight times.”
Disappointed Tim Hortons patrons have begun cooking up theories to explain why they aren’t winning. Deborah Baic/The Globe and Mail

* What's your Tims experience been like this round of Roll Up the Rim to Win?

Behind him walked University of Toronto student Breanna Costelloe. “I'm really upset,” she said, over a song pumping through her iPod. “I drink two or three Tims a day and won a single coffee this time around. My mom says she's had the same luck.”

For five of the eight weeks that Tim Hortons ran the promotion, CBC host Stuart McLean and his 12-member tour bus drove from Fort St. John, B.C., to Fargo, N.D., perhaps braking for more Hortons outlets than any other vehicle on the road during that period.

“We had logged about 8,000 kilometres on the Vinyl Cafe tour bus,” Mr. McLean, who doesn't drink coffee, later reflected on his show. “[We] made some new friends and rolled up enough rims to make you wonder if anyone ever wins anything.”

More devoted coffee drinkers have taken to tracking their sagging fortunes like a trader watching stocks.

Cory Comerford, a telecommunications worker in St. John's, was so excited about his Roll Up the Rim prospects this season that he started a blog, rolluptherimtowin2008.blogspot.com, to monitor his winnings. After a 29-cup losing streak, he briefly stopped posting. The slump reached 35 cups before he won on a cup his brother bought.

“It was a definite rut,” says Mr. Comerford, who normally drinks three double-singles a week, but bumps his intake to one a day during Roll Up the Rim season. “But everyone's reporting lower winnings this year.”

And that's not just a lazy estimate. Mr. Comerford and several co-workers have posted all their cup counts on a whiteboard at work. Their win ratio stands at about one in 12, well off the one in nine that Tim Hortons advertises.

Mr. Comerford has taken his penchant for math and caffeine even further, working out the odds of winning the grand prize Toyota Matrix in each province on a complex spreadsheet.

“If you're in Quebec, you have the best chance of winning,” he says. That's based on calculations he made of the prize disbursements that Tim Horton details in a rules and regulations document. “Ontario, on the other hand, kind of gets the shaft.”

Concerned Tims fans have been quick to finger culprits.

“I've heard they're sending more of the big prizes to the States,” says Mr. Walcott.

Some patrons in Atlantic Canada suspect Hortons workers of stealing winning cups after St. John's resident Bernard Delaney was quoted in local papers insisting that he saw tooth marks on one of his rims in March.

“It would certainly account for the drop,” says Mr. Comerford.

Tim Hortons has worked to discredit these homespun theories. Every Roll Up the Rim season it hires a professional contest company to ensure the odds of winning remain at one in nine, just as they have for previous promotions. Rumours of regional prize disparities are “Not true,” according to company spokeswoman Rachel Douglas.

Not everyone has endured the great doughnut drought of 2008. Calgarian Jonathan Lin has graphed winnings far ahead of the company odds at linisus.com/tim-hortons-roll-up-the-rim. And one Toronto patron reported Tuesday winning “on every second cup.”

Beyond those few examples of success, there may still be hope, however faint. Even though many locations across the country are nearly out of contest cups, five cars and 29 boats remain unclaimed, according to Ms. Douglas, who offered somewhat hollow words of encouragement for desperate prize-seekers: “Keep r-r-rolling!”

Sticky 02-23-2009 09:38 AM

'Tis the Season - Roll up the Rim 2009

1 cup - 1 loss

my streak of losses continues.

Leto 02-23-2009 10:03 AM

damn... I just stopped at Country Style instead. But they have a winner in every cup (if you call 10% off at Mark's Work Wearhouse a win...).

Checking today's country style cup....

And it's a free Brookside Almond Sample! A winner of sorts.

Sticky 02-24-2009 12:53 PM

2 cups - 1 losses

Lucifer 02-24-2009 02:01 PM

0 for 2, bummer

Leto 02-25-2009 04:30 AM

3 cups, 1 free hot chocolate.

Sticky 03-05-2009 09:58 AM

Woohoo. I finally won something - a free cup of coffee.

Daval 03-05-2009 11:17 AM

I had a strong start to the contest with about 4 free coffee's in my first 8 or so cups. I've had another 8 or so cups since then though with no wins. :(

BadNick 03-05-2009 06:15 PM

frickin' Timmy should stay on ice....I bought a lb. of Gold Coast coffee (my favorite) ground Turkish at Starbucks today and got a free coffee and a free apple fritter just because I'm a good customer.

canuckguy 03-05-2009 06:21 PM

I am 0 for 14 so far.....

Leto 03-06-2009 03:33 AM

will be ordering 3 large in about 2 hours.... we'll see.

(Starbucks? It's not the same...)

Leto 03-06-2009 11:09 AM

strike 3!

Lucifer 03-06-2009 04:25 PM

0 for 5. This year just sucks.

Leto 03-11-2009 09:02 AM

this is bad. Every purchase has yielded the dreaded please play again except for one hot chocolate so far. But I heard that Coffee Time will honour your losing cups from Timmie's for a free cup of joe at their place.

So, the Star has this article in it today. Shows how consuming this institution is in Canada:

I also read in one of the comments, that there are NO grand prizes under the rims of the medium coffees. You need to at least purchase a large to win the car.

Tim Hortons contest odds give Ontarians reason to cry over double-double - Yahoo! Canada News

Tim Hortons contest odds give Ontarians reason to cry over double-double

Wed Mar 11, 3:11 AM

TORONTO (CBC) - Tim Hortons lovers across Canada are rolling up rims of coffee cups and, although millions dream of seeing a shiny new car reveal itself under the lid, documents show that's not likely to happen especially if they live in Ontario.

Debra Deveau, a Tim Hortons server in Saint John, N.B., watches traffic at the popular coffee shop mushroom during the annual "Roll Up the Rim to Win" contest, where customers can roll up the rim of their cups to see potential prizes.

"I've seen people come in and buy tons and tons of larges," Deveau said.

"You'll get six, eight, 10 ... cups of large coffees from people who will come in the run of a day, compared to when the contest is not running."

Tim Hortons has issued 281.7 million special contest cups for its popular springtime contest, which runs across Canada and in 11 American states.

The average Canadian adult will roll up a rim 10 times before the company closes the promotion May 1.

Top prize is a $32,000 Toyota Venza and is hidden beneath the rim of 35 of the cups, but company documents show they are not distributed equally across the country.

For example, although 52.5 per cent of all contest cups will be sold in Ontario, only 15 of those 35 grand prize cups or 43 per cent have been allotted to the country's largest province.

That's three fewer than provincial coffee drinkers could have expected under a proportional distribution of top prizes.

Instead, those three cups have been slipped, one each, into stores in British Columbia, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

Tim Hortons lists the overall chances of winning a Toyota Venza as slightly more than one in eight million.

But because of the distribution of cups those odds vary across the country. The best chance to win big is in British Columbia (one in 5.9 million) and the worst is in Ontario (1 in 9.9 million).

Tim Hortons gives no reason in its contest documents for the uneven placement of the car cups around the country.

All other prizes are distributed proportionately.

A call to Tim Hortons headquarters in Oakville, Ont., about the issue was not returned.

Still, many customers say they have their sights set lower than the grand prize anyway.

Katie Burtt, a student at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John, said she would happily celebrate a free doughnut.

"I keep a tally. I've had 26 coffees and won nothing," Burtt said.

Lucifer 03-11-2009 10:45 AM

Finally today, a free doughnut! That makes it 1 for 6!

Unfortunately it was not Irish. I did win a doughnut though.

another large "please play again" .

mysticalbanana 04-07-2009 08:43 AM

I'm 1 of 10-ish so far. I won a coffee from a large cup (surprisingly, it's the only large coffee I bought). Maybe larger cups have better chances?

Sticky 03-01-2010 09:33 AM

0 for 1 on the first day of Roll up the Rim 2010

Daval 03-01-2010 12:07 PM

0:1 as well.

Lucifer 03-02-2010 04:13 AM

This is the RUTR I've been looking forward too, ever since I started my new job, driving the ferry back and forth between halifax and dartmouth: there is a Tim Horton's in each terminal!!!

but so far I'm 0 for 2 :(

Leto 03-02-2010 05:30 AM

omg Lucifer, how are you going to handle that? How many trips a day do you make?

There's coffee wars happening: Macdonalds has launched a free coffee campaign for the next two weeks. By my calculations that beats the odds of Timmie's RUTR by 100%

Daval 03-02-2010 05:53 AM

how does the promo work? do you have to buy anything else? :)

silent_jay 03-02-2010 08:55 AM

How is Macdonalds coffee now? Haven't had it in about 9 years or so, and then it was like paint, awful, vile liquid.

you just walk in ask for a coffee. You don't have to order anything else. The coffee is vastly improved now, nothing like the awful, vile paint from the days of yore. I think they invested in premium coffee production a coupleof years ago, but I've noticed that it is very flavourful, with a stronger taste than Tim's. Although, I prefer dark roast and find Tim's to be a bit bland.

Double-double trouble from McDonald's

Coffee will be a hot topic this month.

While Tim Hortons was rolling out the next instalment of its 24-year-old contest, McDonald's announced it would be pouring free small coffees throughout the day for the next two weeks across Canada.

Can you smell a coffee war brewing?

McDonald's communications manager Stephanie Sorensen stressed the golden arches wasn't trying to rain on the roll-up parade.

"This is actually a promotion that we had planned beforehand," Sorensen said. "The program has been very, very successful for us."

McDonald's has had the giveaway twice before but this time is extending the free coffee offer to the entire day instead of just at breakfast.

While not divulging specific numbers, Sorensen says the giveaway eventually does translate to sales, noting last year McDonald's saw a 30% increase nationwide in coffee sales.

McDonald's isn't the only one taking a shot at coffee giveaways.

Country Style announced that participating locations will serve up a free medium coffee on Wednesday morning as part of its Coffee Lover's Day promotion.

Got McDonalds today instead ot Tim's. It is free and there will be plenty of time to win a free coffee in a couple of weeks.

McDonalds' coffee is pretty good. They make a good Americano and the pricing is good compared to any of the more expensive places and very similar to Tim's.

how many trips a day??? Well, a shift is 9 hours long, the distance is only about .8 of a mile, approx 8 minutes across, plus time to unload/load. A single trip is 15 minutes, round trip 30 minutes, so 4 crossings an hour, so I'm coming into contact with a Timmies about 36 times per shift.

Tim Hortons aims for 600 new Canadian stores, 300 in U.S. by 2013

OAKVILLE, Ont. - Tim Hortons (TSX:THI) is preparing to serve up a new restaurant format as part of its expansion plans over the next three years.

The new restaurant concept will be piloted in at least 10 existing locations. The redesign is intended to more sharply define Tim Hortons image with what the company calls "enhanced finishes, fixtures and seating areas."

The iconic Ontario-based company known for its coffee, doughnuts and light meals says it expects 900 new stores of various formats by 2013.

They would include 600 stores in Canada where Tim Hortons already has more than 3,000 locations under its banner.

Up to 60 locations in Canada will be converted to include the Cold Stone Creamery concept in partnership with an American ice cream chain.

The restaurant operator says it plans to spend $180 million to $200 million this year to support its growth initiatives.

The plans were outlined ahead of a Friday investors conference hosted by the Oakville, Ont.-headquartered company, which currently has 563 locations in the United States.

The company is aiming for same-store sales growth of three per cent to five per cent in Canada and two per cent to four per cent in the United States.

It's also aiming to earn between $1.95 and $2.05 per share.

Beyond 2010, Tims has set the goal of 12 per cent to 15 per cent compound annual average growth in earnings per share from 2011 to 2013.

"Our strategies will continue to transform Tim Hortons, not only adding significant scale but also introducing important additional growth layers to our business platform to extend our position as a leader in the North American restaurant industry," said Don Schroeder, president and CEO.

"We are a growth company with significant long-term opportunities in Canada, and we are also excited by the prospects of continued profitable growth in the U.S., and potentially internationally in the longer term."

Much of the growth in Canada this year will be focused on Quebec, western Canada and major urban locations. In the United States, it will be focused on major regional markets such as New York, Ohio and Michigan.

The company says it plans to spread out from these bases, with about 30 per cent of its development activities between 2010 and 2013 in markets adjacent to its existing territories.
