Rrrrroll up The Rrrrrim

It is that time of year again.

All though my life I have never seen anything but the standard "Sorry, please try again". From Coffee Crisp wrappers to Tim Horton's rims.

So I sit here sipping my first Rrrrroll up The Rrrrrim of the season planning what I am going to do with the GMC Envoy that I am about to win.

Maybe I will keep it. No, It's a gaz guzzler. I will sell it for the cash and pay down my mortgage. Or maybe I should win the Panasonic Home Theatre system. Nah...I don't really need that. Probably best to win the $1000 bucks cash. Nope, I am back to the GMC Envoy.
I just hope I don't win the Coleman camping package.

You know what...anything would be nice for a change even another cup of coffee.

OK here it goes, the lid is off.
I am Rrrrrolling up the rrrrrim......

OH SHOCKER...

Please Try Again/ Reessayez S.V.P.

Does anybody ever win these things?
Post your chocolat bar/Coffee cup/other winning or losing stories.

mokle 03-04-2005 05:16 AM

I always win a free muffin.

I want a damn truck this year, haha.

Charlatan 03-04-2005 05:17 AM

I never win anything... I didn't know you were a Canadian Sticky...

Sticky 03-04-2005 05:21 AM

I think I'm on a 4 year losing streak, it may be longer with the roll up the rim. The last thing I won may have been a donut.

You're a strange cat Sticky... I like that.

metalgeek 03-04-2005 06:41 AM

I was going to college and Calgary, and a girl there won the SUV.
The words out of her mouth were:
"what am I going to do with this, my dad just bought me a new .. (insert car here)"
sigh.

IC3 03-04-2005 06:47 AM

If i won a SUV i would sell it as i probably couldn't afford the insurance on it.

I don't drink much from Tim Hortons..So my chances of winning are slimmer than my chances at winning the lottery

Sticky 03-04-2005 07:21 AM

I don't drink much coffee either but I still expect to win.

I guess it is just our nature.

Daoust 03-04-2005 08:08 AM

Ha ha! I won a coffee on my first try! It's good luck! I don't even want the Envoy because I don't even have enough $$ to my name to pay the taxes on it up front. I'll take the $1000 any old day of the week. Bring it on!!

I love Rrrrrrrrrrolll Up The Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrim !!!! It's so Canadian!!!

scott_p_1 03-04-2005 08:12 AM

I had a friend who won a bicycle like 2 years back. I've never won anything more than a muffin.
Damn Tim Horton's and their liquir crack. I don't even really like it, but I still drink occasionally, and the Roll Up The Rim contest sucks me in like the sucker I am. I quit coffee a few months ago, and now I'm back up to at least 1 a day...

BigBen 03-04-2005 08:31 AM

When I was in grad school, there was a tims about a hundred feet from all my classes. Fucking liscence to print money, a Tim Hortons on a University campus. Anyhoo, I drank so much Tims and I won lots of free coffees, donuts, cookies, all the time. Well over 50 things I won (don't ask how many cups of coffee I drank. I am in therapy)

I had a winning streak on one week during the contest where they GAVE YOU ANOTHER PRIZE CUP WITH YOUR FREE COFFEE!!!

I think I had about 5 cups straight that said 'Free Coffee'

I was in heaven.

I think that we should design Canadian women's underwear where there is a little "Roll up the Rim" on the waist band. If the girl is in the mood, she just puts on the pair that says "Free Sex"

That pair comes with 6 matching pairs that says " Please Try Again/Reessayez S.V.P."

The Canadian Boys would be like "Aw, shucks, I never win at these things..."

You, sir, are a genius. You should patent that!

BigBen 03-04-2005 09:36 AM

Genius yes, Patent, no...

You know how hard it is to get a patent?? And then the whole trademark thing. It would be a nightmare.

I want the record to show, for EONs, that I thought of it first. That is all I need.

As far as genuis goes, yes, it is a terrible burden. I am in therapy.

I HATE to blw my own horn, but why don't you go to my other post on the Canada forum Called "I Work For The D-N-D, Oy! Oy!"

That is where the genius really is.

Sticky 03-04-2005 10:21 AM

I know that there are some Tim Hortons locations un the U.S. do they have Rrrrroll up the Rrrrrim there?

IC3 03-04-2005 05:08 PM

How long has Tim Hortons been in the states? I remember hearing them planning on expanding some shops in the states, But never knew they actually did.

canuckguy 03-04-2005 07:23 PM

just donuts for me and the missus so far. come on envoy!

I have no idea. All I know is that I was recently in Detroit and I saw one there.
I was surprised to see it

Charlatan 03-06-2005 05:59 AM

When I drove to Ellicottville last year I saw one in the small town I drove through on the way there... Had a drive through and everything...

The wierdest place I saw a Tim Horton's was in Singapore. Seriously.

BTW, my Mom showed up yesterday with three winning rims... doughnuts all.

Papageorgeo101 03-06-2005 08:03 AM

I guess I'm pretty lucky. I win at least twice a week (usually coffees, donuts, and muffins...no cookies :( )

muttonglutton 03-06-2005 11:12 AM

Last year I won a doughnut that I never claimed (I may even be able to find the tab and claim it now? That's rough), a muffin which I did (great for breakfast eating), and a cookie. I won a cookie, it made me so proud!

Now, I have to win a gold star as well. Them's were the days.

Oh, yeah, and an Envoy too. Though I don't have a liscence. I guess it just like giving me the money I would get for an Envoy. I wouldn't complain.

wolfpack0102 03-06-2005 11:47 PM

so far 2 coffees, 3 cookies and a muffin for me. I really want the tv!

Wow, I was coming on here to brag about my two prizes in four tries, but I see that you really are probably doing even better than me! Congrats.

Lucifer 03-07-2005 08:33 AM

My first one this season was a bagel, since then a donut. RUTR is a sure sign that spring is on the way. I'm pulling for the SUV, damn the mileage!

Daval 03-07-2005 11:28 AM

i have 2 timmies a day, so after about 14 cups i've got 1 measly donut to my name.

I'll take anything non-food related. I'm not proud.

splck 03-07-2005 08:57 PM

I'm up to 7 rims with nary a win.

kramus 03-08-2005 03:15 AM

I just won a donut eh? 3rd cup.

I'm on a dry spell. Two losses in a row. Hope this isn't supposed to last...

Temporary_User 03-09-2005 12:27 PM

Off topic, but Tim's related story:
I used to work with this know-it-all guy, one day he was telling a story about how his 'friend' was in "insert country" (can't remember) and that some other Canadians reconized that they were Canadians as well because they both had Tim's cups.
After he was done telling that story, another of my co-workers said to him "oh, you saw that COMMERICIAL too?"
HAHA it was great to get this guy! but the reasoning im telling this story is about the Tims in Singapore and the States.
Whates everyones view on Tims expanding.

Charlatan 03-09-2005 12:33 PM

The sad thing is Tim's is now owned by an American company...

I figure if I can be expanding because of Tims then turnabout is fair too. Off main topic but still in the same suburb, is there a Williams coffee pub around any of you people? High end deserts, nice food, real furniture, better coffee ... the drawbacks are 1) only a few here and there and 2) close at 11 p.m. weekdays 12 p.m. Friday and Saturday. If you see one give it a shot.

sherpahigh 03-09-2005 04:44 PM

I haredly ever drink coffee myself but my wife used to have Tim's coffee all the time when she was in school out East. She rolled up the rim to win us a nice Broil King barbie a few years ago. Worked out great too as we didn't have one at the time. Very nice BBQ!

streak_56 03-10-2005 01:49 PM

I have won four times in a row this week, but my streak ended on tuesday. But damn were those four donuts great. The woman who works at the Timmys that I go to gives me extra donuts because... well.... I dont know why yet.

Good luck to all of you... I am holding out for the home theatre system.

Lucifer 03-11-2005 06:14 AM

the people my sister works for, (2 doctors) just won the camping package. isn't it great when the right people win??

splck 03-11-2005 06:50 AM

ok, i won a cup of coffee........................por fin!!

Fate 03-12-2005 06:00 PM

I actually have a timmies cup infront of me... I won a *drum roll*...

donut!. go me.

canuckguy 03-13-2005 06:41 AM

got another muffin the other day....sweet.... ever notice that the quality of the coffee varies huge store to store. one near my office downtown is just terribly bitter, while one near my house is very tasty.

Temporary_User 03-13-2005 03:54 PM

I was unsure if lucifer's post was meant as sarcasm or not. 2 doctors wona camping trip... good for them

m0rpheus 03-14-2005 02:34 PM

I win cookies all the damn time. I really dont eat many cookies... but usually I just win the chance to play again...

I notice the same thing. Out of the 3 Tim Hortons that are convenient for me (2 of the 4 on campus ones, and the one just off campus), 1 of them always has horrible coffee (and service too). The other ones are usually pretty decent.

My biggest pet peeve with Timmies... The cups. They're horrible and always spill and leak.

Also, I'm getting mighty annoyed with my lack of winning. Averaging a cup a day and still no prize :|

Sticky 03-15-2005 06:27 AM

I would guess that the variation in coffee flavour would have to do with the following
- The water - The quality and taste of the water is not controlled by Tim Hortons
- The amount of time a pot is left on the burner - coffee is supposed to be poured out after a certain time yet if the employees don't do it the coffee could start getting a burnt flavour. Also note, scott_p_1, that this would be congruent with your bad service in some locations.

spillblood 03-19-2005 07:04 PM

after 4 cups a day so far i have won 3 free coffees and one free muffin. not very good odds

I swear, in the last week I've had more than 11 cups of Timmies. I win every so often, which boosts my caffein count.
Hope my liver doesn't explode.

Bigbird 03-24-2005 01:13 PM

3 to 4 times a day and still nothing, oh well i'll keep trying

scott_p_1 03-24-2005 01:31 PM

I finally won a donut! You're all jealous.

I was also talking with my girlfriend, and she heard (probably just a rumour) that the winning cups are all marked.
So when we looked at our cups (my donut winner, and her loser), we noticed that there was a difference in the colouring of the front driver side wheel in the SUV. My wheel looked like it was coloured properly, whereas hers had a white space on it. It looked to me like the colouring machine was just off a tad and left a small piece uncoloured.

Anybody else want to look me look into the Tim Hortons conspiracy theory?

Sticky 03-28-2005 05:25 AM

What would be the purpose of marking them?

I have a question though. In the rest of Canada, outside of quebec, are the cups printed in French and English. I don't remember. What I am asking is, is the winning or losing message bilingual or is it only in English?

scott_p_1 03-28-2005 06:04 AM

Yeah, I assumed it wasn't true until we noticed a difference between my winning cup and her loser. But, after a couple more losing cups, it's been debunked. No marked cups.
Also, everything it bilingual (as far as I know)

canucker 03-28-2005 02:21 PM

I have bought my father in law two coffees this past week and both were winners? hmmmmmm.........

Bossnass 03-28-2005 07:39 PM

I'm pretty sure that they are english only, at least here in Alberta. I haven't unrolled very far, but right where the arrow points, it is all english.

Two or three a week since the rolling of the rim started. 0 wins so far.

A mind boggling figure occured to me as I stared at a cup. Odds are 1 in 9 to win. 25 million prizes. That means 225,000,000 cups of coffee during this promotion.
That is quite a few pots.

Sticky 03-28-2005 08:23 PM

Hmm if there are some english and some in frenchand some bilingual - Do you think they know which language they printed the grand prize winners in?

Bossnass 03-29-2005 03:38 PM

(alienated albertan rant)

Well, they would print the winners in a random method. Then all the winners from Alberta, parts of Ontario, and sometimes BC have to give thier winning cups to the rest of the country, mostly to the east coast and a disproportionatly large amount going to Quebec. Those winning cups are then reprinted to be bilingual and sold accordingly.

Or I don't really know.

I like to think of it as 10 cups of coffee for adult in Canada during the promotion.

Seanland 03-29-2005 09:05 PM

man, im on like my 12th one, and all i have to say is 1 in 9 my ass =P

some coffee place out there is stocking up on my winners!

Sticky 03-30-2005 10:01 AM

Another loser today.

I tried a larger size today based on the following question that entered my mind.

Do you think that the proportion of winning cups is different by size?
- A larger size means a higer sales value for Tims
- A smaller size means more margin on the sale (although the actual cost of the coffee in a cup is probably negligeable so the difference in margin may be so minute).

kulrblind 03-30-2005 10:28 AM

Some funnies for y'all:

Hmm, and I have another funny one here, but can't find the pic online. It's a blowjob winner!

Btw, I've only won a donut, which I can't bring myself to redeem and eat. Yucky things, those.

i on a 15-0 run of winning a chance to play again....nice!

RCAlyra2004 04-03-2005 09:27 AM

OK... Here is a "DIRE WARNING" for all of you Hortons Fans.

The other day I won Coffee and a Donut in two separate "rolls" of the rim. I tore off the top of the cups and placed them in my pocket. When I discovered them again they had been laundered... I was emptying the dryer.

The portion of the winning rims that tell you what you have won is WATER SOLUABLE.

NOW I AM OUT A COFFEE AND A DONUT! WAAAAAAHHHH!

It's a good thing that wasn't one of the Big prizes.

Have a great day !

I don't think that I'd tear the rim off a cup that won one of the big prizes. I'd be too scared that I'd somehow void the rim.

Does anybody know the verification process that the big winners go through? It can't be just as simple as showing them a torn off rim saying "Won Envoy". Is there a verification number there too? Do you have to keep the whole cup?

Take a look at this:

This is a PDF of the contest rules. I has the total Roll Up the Rim cup distribution by region as well as the prizes (and therefore chances of winning - for the big prizes) by region.

SHOCKING!

Sticky 04-20-2005 06:02 AM

The Tim Horton's that I visit ran out of Roll up the Rim to Win cups in my preferred size.

Another year passes with no prizes coming my way.

fresnelly 05-21-2005 02:11 PM

I believe that you don't actually win ownership of the car, but a 1 year lease. I agree that the win to lose gap seems much wider than before.

daze32 05-29-2005 11:43 PM

Yellowknife,NT was really behind on this!!! I went in May 15th/05 and asked them for a large, one sugar with the roll up the rim. They said it was over. Grrr....
When was this over with? I guess I should of went else where in canada for a cup. Oh well, back at home (Fort Smith,NT) With no Timmies in sight!! I'll just have to dream about Honey Cruellers for now.

Sticky 06-01-2005 07:27 AM

It was over a long time ago. The Tims that I go to ran out fo the cups on or prior to April 20th.

Sticky 06-08-2005 05:24 AM

Ahhhh!

Double Double = Liquid Gold

Sticky 03-10-2006 06:05 AM

It's That time of year again.

My streak continues. Another loss. :(

I have a few articles to post that may stir up some discussion. They are Tim Horton's related but I have to decide where to post them.
- Families fight over winning cup
-Tim Hortons to open in Kandahar

Daval 03-10-2006 06:54 AM

out of maybe 12 or 14 cups i've got 1 coffee and 1 donut.

I drink 2 timmies a day, and on saturday mornigns on the way to boyscouts and girlguides we get hot chocolates for the kids, so thats 16 potential rims per week. I've never won a good prize yet, but usually end up with a 6 - 10 or so small wins over that period.

I've always wondered what the big prizes say, does it say TV, or CAR? or is there a pictue and verification number like previously suggested.

Bossnass 03-10-2006 07:56 AM

I average 3 or 4 a week, my wife hits 5 or 6. For the last two weeks, we have been 0 for 17. Not even a muffin or a another coffee. This is a disturbing trend, as we went through all of last years rrrrolling time without a single prize.

leftwingx 03-10-2006 12:57 PM

Drat, I refilled my regular coffee cup this morning and forgot to ask for the dispensible cup.

I just know that I missed the truck winning cup again.

james t kirk 03-10-2006 02:31 PM

There was a story on Q107 the other day that fills my heart with sadness.

Apparently an 8 year old kid picked up a tims cup out of the trash at some school in Quebec.

The 8 year old couldn't manage to roll up the rim, so she asked a 10 year old to help her.

The 10 year old rolls up the rim to see the SUV prize.

So, the 8 year old (not being a dumb 8 year old) figures she's won the prize.

But the parents of the 10 year old are claiming that he is the rightful owner.

Sigh.

But it gets worse.....

The teacher who threw the cup in the garbage is now claiming that the SUV is rightfully hers.

Now, Judge JTK says:

The SUV belongs to the 8 year old.

The parents of said 8 year old should throw the 10 year old 10% of what the SUV is worth out of common courtesy.

The teacher gets nothing because she threw the cup away. So F you buddy.

Daoust 03-10-2006 05:16 PM

I heard this story too. I'm glad the youngest one gets it.

I am having a terrible RUTRTW season this year. I'm 1 for 20 I think. Just awful. Terrible. Makes my heart sad.

The only thing that makes my heart sadder is Ken Klee for Luke Richardson, but that's for another thread.

Man, I've won 2 cups of coffee out of maybe 10 cups - I'm pretty happy! Usually I just win a tea biscuit or some other thing I don't typically eat.

so far I'm 0 for 3. Last year at this time, I was 5 for 5, but I'm holding out hope for the plasma!

Ding! a Free Cup of Coffee. It's in the car awaiting the cash-in.

I just don't go to Tim Horton's... of the six or seven coffee places I pass on the way to work, not one is a Tim Horton's.

Starbucks
Second Cup
The Roastery
Le Gourmond
The Sandwich Tree
The Peter Street Deli
Lettieri

(and a Country Style is opening this week).

I never understood why people refer to Timmy's as a coffee shop. Its a dounut shop. McD's, Mac's all of them serve coffee aswell. Can someone help me w/ this.

That's unpossible.

Tim's has been set up in so many locations that you cannot fail to pass one on your way anywhere in the GTA.

I think I do pass one, but it's kind of hard to get the streetcar to stop so I can get off and get one while they wait.

There isn't one on my way to the streetcar from my house and there isn't one on the way from one of the three stops I can get off to go to work.

The closest that I am aware of is at King and John and given the plethora of coffee available closer to work, I'm not walking the extra distance.
