Since the early '90s, the city has boomed as Communist China has relaxed its iron grip on wealth creation, and the Western World has begun to recognise how much China's biggest city has to offer. The result is an incredible East meets West scenario, no more obvious than on The Bund (the major street in Shanghai) where, on one side of the river area these amazing relics of Shanghai's swinging '30s, and on the other side are the biggest buildings you will ever see. Unlike our Western world, the Shanghai hip cats haven't been spoiled for choice and become cynical. Nightclubs are booming, fashion is as avant garde as anywhere else in the world and art is erupting. It's New York without the pretense, Paris without the poodles (although they can still be found in some restaurants), Tokyo without Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. It's amazing, and lets face it, our generation is never going to buy property to keep us anchored with mortgages. Take full advantage of your post baby boomer freedom and get out to see the world.
