Wikipedia Pointlessness

A lot of people spend a whole lot of time working on utterly pointless trivia on wikipedia, that no one would ever concievably want to look up in an encylopedia.

Ok, here's a competition: Find the most pointless page that you can find on wikipedia!

Here's my opening bid: List of songs with titles that do not appear in the lyrics.

There are quite a number of insane "List of songs" pages such as List of songs about body parts, List of songs about the seasons of the year, List of songs containing the name of a ship, aircraft or spacecraft, List of songs with titles that do not appear in the chorus and my favorite of all Songs that start with telephone sounds. However 'songs with titles that do not appear in the lyrics' wins out due to the sheer size and amount of effort that has clearly gone into it

I especially love the 'Talk' page where people debate the merrits of including some particular song or other - there is quite an extensive list of rules for a song to be elligible.

So what nonsense can you find? Remember we're looking for stuff which has had a lot of effort put into it. No stubs.

________________

"Hey, what was the name of that song... you know the one that begins with the telephone sounds?"
"I don't know man, you should check the encylopedia"

This reminds me of the "Green Book of Songs". It's an index of popular music, listed by genre, topics, key words etc... Radio stations use it to pair music clips with news stories for example.

I didn't realize that literally anyone could edit those pages, that's amazing that it holds together at all. They said something like most vandalism gets reverted within 5 minutes. How is that? Are there that many people that use it that someone checks every topic within 5 mins or so? But even if they see it how do they know what used to be there? Or can you only add new stuff and take away only that which you've typed?

I use wikipedia semi often, and again I'll say I'm amazed at how well it stays together. It has an entry for almost everything.

At the top of every article there are buttons for 'Discussion', 'Edit' and 'History'.

Click history, and you can see every version of the page right back to when it was first created. You can also undo any changes back to any particular version with 'revert'. Hence, it is very easy to undo the effects of vandalism.
In discussion you can see people talking about the article, arguing about what should go in, etc.

The completeness of wiki has repeatedly amazed me. I was watching aliens just now and wondered what became of Newt, the girl ridley saved.

wow. I mean, i'm pretty sure if you do anything even remotely successful or noteworthy, you'll be able to find yourself in the Wiki.

Under the List of Songs About Body Parts I found...

* "Big Balls" by AC/DC

"Some balls are held for charity/ and some for fancy dress/ but when they're held for pleasure/ they're the balls that I like best"

I disagree. This song is clearly about large social gatherings.

A few more pretty dumb ones:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammary_intercourse (The slang terms are great though)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...and_performers

and the best, which is hotlinked right at the top of "Idiot":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Bush
"Due to persistent vandalism by anonymous IP addresses and new accounts, editing of this page by new or unregistered users is temporarily disabled. Changes can be discussed on the talk page, or you can request unprotection."

NOOOOOOOO!!!!!! They've deleted List of songs with titles that do not appear in the lyrics!!! How could they!?

How can we get it back?

Undeleted! Undeleted!

Edit: No really, I don't understand. The deletion log shows twice as many 'keep's as 'delete's.

Bastards

And yes. I am taking this to heart!

This is insanely cool! This reminds me of some show I saw on the Discovery Channel special about savants. It was called Medical Incredible and it followed Daniel Tammet, a savant, and at some point he meets Kim Peek (the Real Rain Man). I found it extremely interesting that Kim Peek can associate all the information he has in his brain to solve problems. For example, I think Tammet asked Peek how old Benjamin Franklin would be if he was still alive, and Peek was able to tell him within a matter of seconds exactly how old he would be, down to the minute I think. I'm also willing to bet that he would be able to instantly produce a list of songs whose title does not appear in its chorus, by associating his memories and picking out songs. This Wikipedia "nonsense" that you guys are finding might actually be very useful to future generations that want to study human history--that is, assuming that the wikipedia is still around.

Quote:

That is insanely f*cking cool. Seriously.
