Sardines
Sardines. They're little drops from the gods; ambrosia in fish form. The taste is fish-like, but it has a rich depth in flavor that at least in my experience is unique.
This afternoon I had a can of smoked sardines with the Whole Foods version of Triscuts, and it was outstanding. Still, my favorite is on a really good, home made pizza. Sardines! Do you like them? If not, what's wrong with you? If so, how do you prefer them? |

I eat sardines plain. I've had them on pizza too, which was alright but it's not something I generally think to get.
They really are great though. Onodrim thinks I'm crazy that I enjoy eating them as a snack, but it's just something I picked up on as a kid and I still enjoy it to this day. ![]()

I love a good Caesar Salad with actual sardines on it. Just had one the other night at Morton's steak house (NOT CHEAP) but I never think to buy them myself and have them at home.
Mrs. Coaster couldn't distance herself far enough away from them, she hates all of those quirky yet delicious foods like sardines.

I've found the trick to getting people to like sardines lies in hiding it in something. Frito Misto, Sarde alla Lupa, Pasta con le Sarde, all of these feature sardines, but not as a sort of lone source of taste. They rely on how well sardines play with other flavors and textures to really create a wider experience.

They can them in mustard or tomato sauce... so I think I could be able to choke them down even if they actually taste like a the nether regions of a well-used Thai whore. I found a pretty nifty article on them in some manly-man magazine... I'm sold on the little suckers now.

Used to bring Millionaires sardines to the football games while in university. Nothing like a wineskin of plonk, and a freshly opened tin of sardines to cheer on your side!

Only done the canned ones and I love 'em, too. Great with Triscuits, as you suggested.
I think my favorite would be one of the Spanish brands in tomato sauce with a slice of onion. ![]() Never ever had a fresh sardine. Where can you get 'em in the USofA?

I've been meaning to add sardines to my diet. For convenience's and health's sakes.

I love smoked ones on Breton crackers. They're a great snack on camping trips.

Sardines are fun.
The many shining shades of silver, of their skin, are accentuated by the oil. The spines I wouldn't eat, when I was a child, but I would be fascinated as I would peel them out. An early lesson in anatomy, it was. This sandwich is very tasty. Peanut butter-sardines- & chocolate. They went way overboard with the chocolate in this pic, though. All you need is a slight drizzle of chocolate; the darker the better. ![]() |

When I was growing up, my Dad would eat sardines as a snack every weekend.
Put them on regular old saltines with yellow mustard. I used to beg for one, I loved them. Until someone told me I was eating the bones and internal organs of that little fishy. Haven't had once since. |

Never had foie gras and never heard of haggis but just looked it up and noooo.
I don't like organ meats, heart, liver, or others like sweetbreads, brains, tongue. I've been faced with them, had a fork in my hand, and just couldn't do it. Makes no sense I know if I'll eat the flesh and gnaw on the bones! |

I love sardines.
On weekends when I was growing up it wasn't unusual for Dad to whip up a plate of cheese and crackers complete with either sardines or Braunschweiger. Personally I really like to eat them plain too. Yum.

Reviving this thread, because last time I went grocery shopping I picked up a tin of sardines packed in mustard. I love them plain or in tomato sauce, but have never had the mustard variety before.
I'm eating them now on toast with a very, very light spreading of cream cheese beneath. It's quite tasty. Didn't think of tomato, but I'll have to do that next time. Sadly, I have to wait until Magpie is out to eat my little fishy treats. She's not really an adventurous sort.

Packed in mustard? Whoa.
If you want to slowly introduce people to the awesomeness that is sardines, I'd stick them in something where they're only one in a whole symphony of complimentary flavors. Or pizza. Pizza is a great vehicle for introducing people to new things like anchovies and sardines pizza, pineapple and ham (Hawaiian) pizza, or my personal favorite to freak people out with: eel and roasted garlic pizza. Especially when you chase people around the kitchen with the eel before cooking it. I can't figure out why I'm single. |
