Memoirs of a Geisha

I found this book to be REALLY good. I enjoyed it a lot more than I enjoied the movie.

The thing is with the book, is that it goes into detail about explaining the situation, and why things are happening with the main characters.

The movie I felt was bit too quick (and long at the same time... I wanted it to hurry up and end). They left too much stuff out and still didn't manage to keep the movie short.

I felt that this book should have stayed a book (although if it was never made into a movie, I probably would have never read it...).

So in conclusion, read the book, don't go see the movie.

Did you enjoy the book?

I have not read the book but the movie trailer looks good. Are you saying don't even waste my time? Didn't it get nominated for a Golden Globe??

I haven't watched it yet but I heard that it wasn't any good. I don't know but I'll prolly go watch it anyway. Ziyi is the only reason I need for that.

On another note, here's a different version of the movie. It's pretty hilarious I'd say.

I read this book when it first came out and absolutely loved it... I had to keep reminding myself that the book was written by a caucasian male, because he seemed to have so much insight into the female mind -- and especially the world of the geisha...

As with most books that I've really enjoyed, I've no desire to see the movie... I may rent it wihen it's out on DVD but I strongly doubt it - -I dont see how the book can be done justice..

Means nothing. I saw the movie (three days ago), and like everyone has said, it doesn't do justice to the book.

That was a powerful, in depth book. Nicely written by a man about geishas and their caste system in Japan.

Saw the movie yesterday and yes, I tend to agree that it left out far too much about the main characters. Though the filming style and location choices were beautitful and so were the actresses....I'm glad I read the book first.

Apparently there was "much ado" about the fact that Speilberg had Chinese actresses playing the parts of the main Japanese ladies in this picture. It didn't ruin the film for me, but in honor of the true geishas, that still perform, I totally understand the reaction from those who are Japanese. A worthy film with deep universal themes IMHO.
