That was a powerful, in depth book. Nicely written by a man about geishas and their caste system in Japan.
Saw the movie yesterday and yes, I tend to agree that it left out far too much about the main characters. Though the filming style and location choices were beautitful and so were the actresses....I'm glad I read the book first.
Apparently there was "much ado" about the fact that Speilberg had Chinese actresses playing the parts of the main Japanese ladies in this picture. It didn't ruin the film for me, but in honor of the true geishas, that still perform, I totally understand the reaction from those who are Japanese. A worthy film with deep universal themes IMHO.
