So which movies meet your high standards of "paying to see"?

I watched the DVD collection then went to see the movie.

Frekain rad

didn't expect some of the unfortunate things... I also don't expect another season. Too cult for the networks to realize its potential.

Ummmm... what?

The TV shows were made for TV. The movie was made for the theaters.

Well, we both know only shitty shows get cancelled. Like Family guy. That show was retarded, its better now that its gone. I won't miss it at all.

Ahhh, but what you don't know is that Fox is known to give good shows the axe if it doesn't become an instint hit. Wonderfalls was also cancelled before it could develop a strong fan base. It's DVD sales were much better than expected.

And you'll note that Family Guy is on the air, with new episodes.

Don't know whether a sequel will be made or not. Probably not. But if not, Serenity at least puts a reasonable conclusion on the whole storyline started in Firefly. I think that part of that conclusion is River's coming of age, despite what was done to her, to become a full member of the crew. And the conversation between her and Mal during the final liftoff was an extremely satisfying emotional coda to the whole enterprise, series and film and all.

I know i'm a little late in the game...but I saw it when it came out and LOVED it!! MUCH better then the first 3 Star Wars movies. I was so pissed when Firefly got cancelled as I loved it. I'm also pissed that it didn't make more money at the movies because they probably won't make a sequel. One could hope I guess but I doubt it.

Saw it with my brother. I will admit I cry easier than most but not so easy as the drop of a hat, and raerly in public.

But I will cry for Joss Whedon. awsome movie. On the "will buy the day it comes out on DVD" list.

I was a big fan of the series. Like someone here said, it's like watching Star Wars with an emphasis on Han Solo. One of the biggest things I liked about the show was 1) no aliens and 2) it was not "epic". By this I mean, we were following the story of a truly rag-tag group of people who were scraping by against (the background of) multiple oppressive forces. However, the story is still focused on the characters simply making a living, NOT saving the galaxy single-handedly. I thought this was very fresh, made the story more "relatable", and allowed the awesome character development to shine through instead of worrying about a "save the world" plot that tends to mute everything else out.

I really enjoyed the movie, but now having said everything above...

Spoiler: I did not like the fact that the movie went in a different direction than the show in that it became much more epic. I'm not against "explaining" the universe more, e.g. how the Reavers came to be, but I didn't like the fact that it was "the crew against the Alliance" to bring out the truth. It began to feel too much like typical action movies where a small group takes on everybody and wins. This was even worse, in my opinion, when they turned River into an unstoppable superhero soldier. I thought they were making her eerily strong by just having her with some psychic abilities in the show. That, to me, made her fill a "niche" in the crew. Having her totally psychic as well as Rambo^3 just makes the rest of the crew look insignificant, which is BAD when the glory of the Firefly universe is the strength of each individual crew member making up a hole.

When Wash died, I thought they were going to go in a darker direction and have the entire crew sacrificed in the process of broadcasting the truth about the Reavers. I would have been okay with that, but then it went entirely too "Hollywood" with the ultra happy ending and the "I'm down but I'm not out" super-recharge battle. Note: I'm referring to River, not the Captain.

So in the end, I liked the movie a lot, but I didn't like it as much as I could have since it went away from what interested me personally from the show.

Oh, and one more quibble. Normally I have a healthy dose of "suspended disbelief" when watching sci-fi, but did anybody else think "WOW everything sure is close together" in Serenity. In Firefly, it seemed like they actually had long voyage times (what with the cosmos being pretty... big). But in this film, it felt like, "Hey, we're only 30 mins away from here, and once there, only 2 hours away from there, then only 10 mins away from our final destination!"

i just finished watching the whole firefly series on dvd. this interest was sparked by seeing the movie first.

and now i regret FOX. the show had a hell of a lot of potential. with only one season (and not a full season either) it pulled together a pretty solid "verse" and kept me entertained. i really wish joss whedon had been given the chance to fill in the story a bit more.

even with the faults in the movie, i'm definitely glad that whedon was given this opportunity to take the story a little further. feels right to me.

Being owned by Joss Whedon, I had been meaning to watch the series for ages. After watching the pilot episode, I knew I was in for something great and was instntly hooked. I think I got through the entire series in under a week, and only that slowly because of class. So yeah I was really excited to see the movie too.

For the most part I was thrilled with Serenity. The writing was just as excellent as the series, the humor and the drama were all there as I remembered it. The action was just fantastic as well, I especially liked River's way of fighting that was so powerful and yet gracefully balletic in a way too. MY only real complaint with the movie was that the Operative was far too similar to the Bounty Hunter from Objects in Space, it took me a few minutes in the beginning to determine if it was the same character or not. Also, at first I was worried that the ship had lost some of it's homey famliar feel on the big screen, but as the movie progressed it continued to improve. The blues and silvers started to give way to the reds and yellows again. In retrospect I think it was a way of showing Mal's internal struggle visually. In the beginning he's hard and cold and lost, by the end he has found his home again so to speak. Anyway, two huge thumbs up. It's such a loss that this show was never given the chance it deserved. Here's to hoping for more movies in the future!

Yes - a great series and movie. I actually watched it because of this thread, and now it's an obsession. I went through the series in 2 days... I've seen conflicting reports about the future of the franchise. Can anyone clarify the status of this series and Sci-Fi channel? Will they be making more episodes???

I don't know about new episodes of Firefly on Sci-fi, (though, I wish they would) but I think they may be taking the old ones off of there.
If I was reading correctly, the commercial said John Doe would be airing in that timeslot.

edit: yup, thought so...

I don't know if details of the series or the movie can really be considered spoilers but, just in case, it's all in spoiler space!

Spoiler: It sounds to me like you've forgotten a bit of the series, where they strongly hint that she's a physical genius, as well as a mental one. In fact, this was established well before she was given psychic abilities, so you should really be annoyed that the rambo was also psychic, rather than the other way around.

Spoiler: Actually, this is a common misconception of the series. Then entire series takes place in the same solar system, and not the entire "cosmos." Just so you know...

I just saw this movie and I thought it was great. The acting was top notch, the script was well written, and the movie had atmosphere, unlike many of today's movies. I've never seen Firefly but it makes me want to watch it now. Cool, cool movie.

yeah I watched it with Lasereth and I liked it a LOT. The first time I watched it I was half-asleep and turned it off because I was getting bored. But come to think of it, I'm pretty sure I was just really sleepy.

The second time I actually *watched* the movie and finished it, I LOVED it. GREAT characters (and I've only seen the movie, none of Firefly!), an interesting plot, and the best of all, believability. This movie reminded me of Cowboy Bebop (the best anime ever made in my opinion) and that's how I see the distant future. Everyone isn't rich, there are still low-level income people around. The characters, however, are the best part about the movie. They interact with each other very well. I'm going to buy the first (and only) season when I get the chance, but I've heard it's out of production? Is this true?

Some more serenity news for you

Quote:
As a part of the Serenity Now Equality Now world-wide campaign to raise money for writer/director Joss Whedon’s favorite charity “Equality Now”, fans around the world are organizing a one-night-only special presentation of the motion picture Serenity. These showings are scheduled to occur on or near June 23, which happens to be the one-year anniversary of the third and final public preview of the then unfinished motion picture. (Not totally coincidentally, June 23 also happens to be Joss Whedon’s birthday.)

The current list of showings can be found at http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/. As of May 21, there were 36 cities on 3 continents planning showings, with 19 of those screenings confirmed.

Be sure to pass the word along to everyone you know that happens to like Serenity or Firefly, or anyone you think MIGHT like Serenity or Firefly… or even people who you think would be interested in a good night at the theater to raise money for charity.

And if you can, get involved - publicity will be key at this point, so if you have any skills (audio, video, graphic arts) be sure to go to the above URL and click through to the Yahoo! Group and join up. (If anyone here has the ability to make a really good TV ad, I'd love to see if I can get it as a cable company local insert, for instance.)

Again, proceeds from this world-wide campaign go to “Equality Now.”
If you havnt seen this movie, or didnt get to see it in the theater here is your chance. GO SEE IT!

Nope. Still out there. Sells pretty well, too. #45 selling DVD on Amazon, actually. (Serenity is #31).

And oh so totally worth it.
