Being owned by Joss Whedon, I had been meaning to watch the series for ages. After watching the pilot episode, I knew I was in for something great and was instntly hooked. I think I got through the entire series in under a week, and only that slowly because of class.
So yeah I was really excited to see the movie too.
For the most part I was thrilled with Serenity. The writing was just as excellent as the series, the humor and the drama were all there as I remembered it. The action was just fantastic as well, I especially liked River's way of fighting that was so powerful and yet gracefully balletic in a way too. MY only real complaint with the movie was that the Operative was far too similar to the Bounty Hunter from Objects in Space, it took me a few minutes in the beginning to determine if it was the same character or not. Also, at first I was worried that the ship had lost some of it's homey famliar feel on the big screen, but as the movie progressed it continued to improve. The blues and silvers started to give way to the reds and yellows again. In retrospect I think it was a way of showing Mal's internal struggle visually. In the beginning he's hard and cold and lost, by the end he has found his home again so to speak. Anyway, two huge thumbs up. It's such a loss that this show was never given the chance it deserved. Here's to hoping for more movies in the future!
