Serenity
My friends and I were able to see the second sneak preview of Serenity last week and I have to admit it was pretty cool. If you are a firefly fan I think you will love the movie, as it basically carries on the mood and feel of the show.
The only thing I didn't like is the fact the movie was suppose to take place 8 months after the tams were picked up. Well in one of the episodes they mention it's been six months, and well...if you have seen the movie a lot of damn things happened in that 2 months since. Doesn't ruin the movie, just I didn't see any reason at all they couldn't just say it's been 3 years. |
wait, is it out? i saw previews for it on apple.com.
|
It was an early screening available in select cities. I know Atlanta and Las Vegas, but probably plenty more too.
|
My wife and I are in the middle of watching the DVDs for the show. So far they have been very entertaining and we are looking forward to seeing the movie.
|
Excellent movie! I loved it. Would recomend it to anyone and everyone whether they like sci fi or not, or whether they've seen the series or not. The characters are so strong a plot almost isn't needed.
I dearly hope more people see it, cause on opening night the theater I saw it in was only half fulll. I think it'll pick up more fans once word of the movie gets around. |
This came out in Australia last week.
For some reason, nobody bothered to show Firefly here, so I watched the movie and ruined the series by finding out all the stuff about the show I never knew existed which I now want to see. Lol, good film though. |
I just saw it last night - it was great. The theater I was in was about 3/4 full, but that's probably because the percentage of people who know about Firefly/Serenity is much higher on a college campus than among regular populace.
If I wasn't so broke, I'd probably go see it again - I just loved some of the lines, the whole theater was laughing at times. |
do you have to see Firefly first to understande whats going on in Serenity? I really wanna see it, but I don't wanna spend 2 hours scratching my head wondering what the hell everyone is talking about.
|
HOLY SHIT!!!! I actually cant say more without going on a 10 minute rant about how good it was.

A very good film. |
Yeah, I'd say that certain moments, phrases, jokes, throwaway details will have greater impact if you are familiar with Firefly. However, I think you can not know anything and still have a great time.
In fact, I can't imagine anyone not having a great time at this movie. Sure I'm a fanboy, but goddam, this is the best sci-fi movie in a long-assed time. |
I loved it so much that I intend on seeing it again.
It was much better than I was expecting, which was great, 'cause I had high expectations to start out with. Awesome. |
Jeez. When I saw the preview, I couldn't even figure out what the hell the movie was about. But then again, I never bothered to find out.
With all these great reviews, perhaps i'll give it a try |
I said this already in the "rate the last movie" thread, but the thing I enjoyed most about it was that it was so much darker than the series ever was.
It made it so much more interesting in my opinion. Just enough of the old stuff to keep you comfortable, but enough of the new to let the movie stand on its own. Just a phenomenal bit of sci-fi I've seen in a long while. Hell, a phenomenal bit of film, period. |
damn... just saw it... damn
it was so good... |
Awesome movie. And it's much better to enjoy if you've seen the show. Everything that takes place has much more of an impact on the viewer. But why oh why did (Censored) have to die?!
|
Normally I'm pretty sparse about giving out ratings above an 8, but I'd have to give this a 9.75.
Two favorite lines: "I swallowed a bug" "Screw this, I wanna live!" And a space battle scene that puts Star Wars to shame! Spoiler: And I agree it major sucks that Wash dies. The Shepherd I could live without, but Wash was awesome. And a question for those who have seen the series, was the assassin supposed to be the same guy from the series, or does the alliance only hire mellow black guys in jumpsuits as assassins? |
I saw it last night. I had only watched the first episode of the series and it gave me a feel for what the movie would be like. I loved the movie and so all day today my friends and I had a Firefly party. We have almost finished the series. However, when watching the series after the movie, it lost a little bit of the intenseness from some of the scenes because I knew could not die in order to make the movie happen. Tomorrow I think I am going to finish the series.

The movie was awsome. Like someone above said, I already had high expectations and it still exceeded them. It remained funny throughout the movie and yet still very serious and dramatic with nice action to boot. I just would have liked to see a bit more of that space fight.
I kept thinking they'd ruin/change one of the character's personalities in a scene to make it more movie like, but especially that one event, she handled that loss just like she should/would have. Quote:
All in all theyre very different though, they both act this sort of mellow crazy/zealous which is hard to pull off so its unique, but not really that similar. So does anyone know if theyre making another one? I heard there was supposed to be 3, but that they changed their minds. |
i had also heard that there are supposed to be 3 movies... I really hope that they make more... dont know if its going to get enough sales though... last night the theatre was only 1/4 full...
Spoiler: i couldnt believe it when wash died... my jaw just dropped i was just thinking "no no no thats not sposed to happen!!!! |
Just got to go see it (couldn't find a babysitter for opening night) and it was fantastic. I had high expectations, and it met or exceeded all of them. The theater was packed too, for a matinee show on a Monday. A fair number of browncoats were in attendance.
I highly recommend the movie to anyone, but you'll get a lil more out of it if you watch the series first. |
Yeah, the Alliance assassin is definitely not Jubil Erli from the "Objects In Space" episode in the Firefly series. I liked Jubil waaaay better than the assassin (better character, voice, outfit and attitude), although the assassin's finishing move on the hapless scientist in the beginning of the flick (paralyzing him and putting the sword down point up for him to fall onto) was one of the most awesome touches I've ever seen in a fight.
Overall, I really, really enjoyed that movie. As a hardcore fan of the series, I'm totally pleased with what Joss has done, and, yes, even with the rather unexpected events (see spoilers above). I would love to see the series come back, but I'll settle for a few sequels. |
Loved it loved it loved it.
Except for the aforementioned spoiler. Damn, I hated to see that! |
absolutely brilliant, saw it friday. not too many people there, but all that were were obvious fans of the series (im sure if i werent at a theater in the middle of bumfuck ohio farm country, that might have been different).
spoiler: Spoiler: wash sucks :p the entire theater gasped when he was killed, with a few "noooo!"s. a quick aside for those of you curious about books past and disappointed with no explanations, the going theory is that he was a parliament assassin, so in seeing how the assassin finished out, you can see how book came to his opinions. more than a few clues in the movie/series furthering that idea as well |

Having never seen the series, I must say that I probably lost some of the back story... but still a GREAT movie! |
Sadly, as people here have noted, it has an only so-so opening weekend. So the chaces for more movies or for this to spur a revival of the TV series aren't too great.
On the other hand, movies with great buzz like this often get stronger as the weeks go on. So keep talking about it! |
I went in to the movie knowing absolutely zero about it; only its place in pop culture history. I was very impressed and suprised by how visceral an experience it was. That scene where the reavers (sp?) come out of the clouds behind the ship made the movie for me.
Serenity is a bit like a Star Wars featuring Han Solo. I couldn't help but think how badly George Lucas botched the Star Wars prequels. Here is a movie full to the brim with heart and swagger. My only caveat was the high level of violence. Less than a Verhoevan fillm, but still more than I was expecting. |
In a pretty cool move to convince people to go see Serenity, Universal is offering the first 9 minutes free online:
http://video.vividas.com/CDN1/3929_S...web/index.html See it. Love it. Go see it in the theaters this weekend. It's the best action movie you'll see in a long, long time. |
gah it was so good, i am a firefly fan, but the movie is so well made anyone can enjoy it
I really hope it has a turn around in the box office... this movie deserves to succeed |
a friend of mine just watched all the series this week and were goin to see the movie this weekend... cant wait to see it again!
|
Thanks, guy44.
Joss does it again! |
Just saw the 9min clip. I've got to see this movie again soon.
|
Awesome movie... I loved the quick dialog.
|
absolutely awesome.
Spoiler: Reavers vs River... fucking come on then!!! GRRRRRGGG |

Also I think fox 8 is showing it now (though I don't have pay TV, so I can't personally confirm that) Edit - I just ordered the three comic books - these supposedly fill in some of the story between series and movie (for those interested). I ordered them from an OZ comic site, but sure you could find them stateside if you are interested... Spoiler: did anyone else think - "oh fuck they are all going to die" just for a few seconds before river kicked some reaver arse? |
This is a belated answer to the question of needing to see the show to understand/appreciate the movie
No, you definitely don't need to, but it really really helps. Whedon is a very character-driven writer/director so really "getting" Angel, Buffy and Firefly/Serenity is about "getting" the characters and how they fit together. Serenity stands well enough on its own as a good story but lacks the background of the nuances of the relationships between the crew. Definitely see Serenity and enjoy it. Then buy/rent Firefly and make it that much better. |
Spoiler: When I saw the movie, I'd never seen or heard of Firefly, I saw it off the fact I loved BTVS and it was a Joss Whedon movie. As it got the end, I figured that the main bulk of the crew would probably survive and a few die... so when River jumped into the Reavers to get the doctors bag and shut the doors, I figured that she would die to let them live, and then the assassin would somehow get out and bring his forces to drive back the Reavers and let them go since River was dead and he had achieved his mission and he didnt care about anything else.... so I definitely bought that River was gonna get torn up by the Reavers - it seemed to fit that her fears would finally - in a literal sense - consume her, and it would be a kind of tragic happy ending I was expecting from the movie.
So when it flashed to the fight and she was just beating the shit out of the Reavers I was just thinking "wow... awesome"... and then when the doors finally open and she's just standing there surrounded by a pile of corpses, it was just like... "aw, you Reaver motherfuckers just got MERKED"... pretty cool! |

Sheesh. Who knew there could be so many fans of a canceled show.
It's a made for TV movie that made it to the big screen. It's fun, quirky and mostly entertaining but no one should pay to see it... |
