Apparently instead of Will Smith we're getting Tom Cruise... Oh well. I'm still really interested in it nonetheless.

Wow I didn't think it was that bad if you take out all the comedic elements they feel the need to add into any movie Will Smith is in. Tom Cruise redeemed himself in The Last Samurai and I hear Collateral kicked ass too. I can't wait!

yeah this looks rather good...and remember spielberg rarely dissapoints...although this is a big change from his usual boy/man finding himself...it seems at least..

They should have done it like the radio broadcasts though...that would have been fun.

I never learned about it in history class. I'm not sure where I learned it though. Word of mouth, I guess. It was the old radio drama, right? Wish I could have been there...

Looks like it may be pretty good. Will definitely want to see it. It may be hard to measure up to the original for those who are old enough to remember it though.

I'm exactly 20 years old and I've lived in Texas all my life. I've never heard any of this in school...not even on T.V. I guess I didn't have cool teachers. How dare you insult me though! Shame on you

We covered it for an entire class period one day. And we even watched the old movie (agh! scary!).

This is going to be a very interesting movie. The trailer just really gives me the creeps. What they DIDN'T show is what's scary. All you can see is the light of explosions and the sound of things blowing up in the distance. Frightening!

I've read the book, I saw the old movie and I've heard a few clips from the old radio drama.

If spielberg doest screw this up it has the potential to be a good movie...
We'll see.

I can say one thing about the teaser trailer, It does not get me excited about this story, I hope a new one comes out soon. But than again, i will most likely be in line to see it opening night with the rest of the scifi buffs in the city.

Ok, well for those of you who didn't pay attention in History, or had school systems that sucked ass, here's a quick lesson.

War of the Worlds was originally a book, which was then turned into a radio address read by Orson Wells on October 30, 1938. Millions of people tuned into the very popular radio show, but there wern't any "coming attractions" in those days, sometimes an announcer would say "stay tuned next week for...." but in this case they didn't do it. They decided to read the book like it was a news bulletin. They played the same sounds they would for a news flash and began reading. People thought it was real. Actors played officials and there were eyewitness accounts. At the beginning of the program, there was a statement that it was fiction, but many people missed it. The next announcement didn't come until 40 minutes into the program.

People panicked, they hid in cellars, they packed the roads trying to get out of town and hide, they loaded guns, they wrapped their heads in towels to save themselves from the Martian's poisonous gas.

Once it was learned that it was all fiction, people went back to their normal lives, but it was commented that Hitler was able to scare people like this, but he had an army and air force to back him up. Orson Wells had only some well trained actors and some sound effects to have almost the same effect. It was one of the first entertainment scandals. After this was the "Quiz Show" scandal in the 50's.

I have read the book and have seen the movie, I love each in their own right. I was hoping when I first heard about them making a new movie that it would be a more direct adaptation of the book rather than just a remake of the movie, but beggers can't be choosers. I hope this new movie can live up to the high standards I've set the old one at.

Anyway, there's another production company that made a faithful adaptation of the book set in the lat 1800s. It will be coming out a few weeks before the Spielberg version but I'm not sure on it's release.

H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds

I've heard the original radio broadcast by orson wells and it was very interesting, so I hope this movie can live up to that. If it does it could be a very good film.

Oh great! Another Hollywood "re-imagining" of an old classic, over-acted by Mr. Cruise, over-produced my Mr. Spielberg, and over-hyped by everyone.

I would really love to see a modern re-make of this. The original Orson Wells radio broadcast is still amazing, even when you know what's going on. The original movie was adequate in its own 50s/60s kind of way. The musical interpretation done by Jef Wayne featureing some amazing performances of some of the best (or best-known) musicians from the 70s (the late Phil Lynot from Thin Lizzie and Justin Hayward from Moody Blues, and narrated by Richard Burton) was fantastic.

I can still hope that this new feature movie will be a masterpeice, but I can't say that I'm thrilled with any Spielberg movie that I have seen with his motto of "less is not more, more is more." More money, more special effects, more words in the screenplay, more editing, more post-production, more everything. Take a lesson from Christopher Nolan (Memento, Following) and show us a simple peice of film that creates a story throuhg the characters and the story, not through over-directing and over-producing an emtpy, vapid piece of shit, like AI for example (although there are many others)

Just my $0.02 worth. Still, great teaser on the trailer, I WANT to like it, I do!

ps. Independence Day, in my opinion, is not worth the two hours of my time to watch it, nevermind the trillions they spent to make it. Just a useless visual experience when I could have been sleeping, or peeing, or scratching my scrotum, ANYTHING but watching that "movie."

Peace,

Pierre

The scene when there's lights over the hill and sub-bass coming from the distance is very similar to an intense reoccuring dream I get that kind of has to do with the apocolypse.

It's gonna be a good movie if the rest of the film is that powerful.
